OT: Pentax K-x kit on w00t.com today

2011-08-17 Thread Charles Robinson
K-x with 18-55 and 55-300 for $569.99

Seems like a good deal if someone is thinking about getting into a kit for a
reasonable amount.

This is time-sensitive (deal is online until they're gone) so if you're
excited, jump now!

(Maybe it's not OT, not sure)

Useless post without a link. Late post, even if it had a link:

Now THAT's time sensitive.

Get it with the kit and then sell the kit lens for a handy profit.

I'm planning on picking up the K-7 and wouldn't mind a lens with the II
optical formula for times when I just want to have a snapshot camera in a bar

I used the kit lens on my K-x once, to see how it worked. Most of the
IMGP shots in this set were shot with it:

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157623732458488/

For a kit lens, it doesn't suck. Apart from my DA40 it might also be
my lightest lens. Which has some benefits.

Weird. The reboot problem, not the fact that you'll eventually stop
hitting yourself with a hammer.

there are probably half a dozen of us that bought one as a second body,
and found ourselves using it more than our primary body.

I thought I'd use it when I either needed ISO 1600 or when I didn't
want to change lenses on my K20. Instead, I use my K20 pretty much when
I need the absolute best low ISO IQ, or I don't want to change lenses on
my K-x.

Pentax knocked one out of the hockey court with this one. Amazing
performance for the price and a surprisingly good job with the UI,
despite the hardware limitations (buttons, dials, lights).

Several of us have them and by and large we're happy with them.

I've been using one for a few months now and overall I'm very
impressed by them. I do a lot of low-light work and simply put, the
K-x is the best APS-C format camera with regards to high ISO
performance (note I've. It's also nice and small and quite responsive.
The only real weakness I've found is the metering, the K-x retains the
older 16 zone meter which isn't all that reliable. The AF point issue
(No AF point illumination in the viewfinder) isn't a problem for me as
I simply locked the camera down to the centre point and leave it
there, just like every other AF Pentax I've had.

Overall, it's a whole lot of camera for the money, but it does have
its limitations, primarily the basic build quality, small buffer,AA
batteries (Battery life is pitiful compared to the D300 I used to
have), no grip, no support for a remote release and poor Live View
implementation.

Hi Jeffery,

Firstly welcome aboard, it's a great place but it's a bit like the
Hotel California, I think I've been here for over ten years now, oh
well ;-)

I concur with the others, I have found myself gravitating towards the
K-x as my first option to shoot even though I have a K20 at my
disposal. At this point I guess the only thing that I'm not so
enamoured with is the VF. It's nearly impossible to manually focus
wide aperture lenses in low light accurately. Granted no APS sized
finders are great but hopefully I'll be more satisfied when I finally
get my third party screen installed so it's accurate.

Other than that it's a really great little photographic tool, a search
though the PDML archives will provide you with a wealth of information
from current users.

Cheers,

Re: Pentax K-x - What say you?

2010-04-30 Thread Jeffery Smith
Larry and Adam, thanks for the replies.

I'm very glad to hear about the low light capabilities. I have been using
rangefinders primarily for the past 10 years because lack of mirror flap and
fast lens availability made low light work possible (at least with film). I
have followed Fuji reviews for about 5 years because of their famed low noise
at low light levels, but didn't want to switch to the Nikon lens format. The
Pentax K-x is priced about the same as a digicam, and I have several fast
lenses (Sigma 30/1.4 and Pentax 50/1.4) that I could put to good use on the
K-x. The combination of the Sigma 30/1.4 and the K-x is sounding very good it
me right now for indoor work.

Thanks again,

Jeffery

Re: Pentax K-x - What say you?

2010-04-30 Thread Bruce Dayton
Well, you would have to determine what factors are most important to
you. As far as low light goes, it is the best Pentax body and
possibly the best APS-C body from any maker. As far as size and
ergonomics, it is great. Now, does it compare to the K20D or K7 when
it comes to things like robust body, weather sealing, more specific
options? Probably not. It is a generation ahead of the K20D so I
find the AF to be a little better than the K20, probably not far from
the K7.

You will need to tell us more of what is important to you. I can say
that it has changed some of my shooting style and thinking because of
the high ISO ability. You can dial up the ISO and get great shots.
Here is an ISO 1600 shot - no post processing other than sizing down
for web:
http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/bkdphoto-00063.htm

Highly recommended camera for the money. If I could only have/use
one body between my K-x and K20D, it would be the K-x.

Bruce

Did you shoot in RAW mode? That seems to make a world of difference noise-wise
in some cameras.

possibly the best APS-C body from any maker. As far as size and

it comes to things like robust body, weather sealing, more specific

Highly recommended camera for the money. If I could only have/use
one body between my K-x and K20D, it would be the K-x.

That was a jpg straight out of the camera. Pentax has seemed to
really dialed in the noise issue in the jpg engine for the K-x.

RAW is even better, especially when processed through CaptureOne 5.1.

 to the K100D.

It feels more like the *istD vs. *istDS where the 'lesser' model
somewhat improves on the 'higher' model. I did not get to try the
ISO12.8k (out of sight out of mind...the camera was defaulted to 6400
when I was scrolling through the ISO range...I had the 'aw shucks'
moment after...) but I would tend to agree with the K-x' sensor being
better than the K-7s' although I could not quantify that at the
moment. Not exactly for pixel peepers but here is the same scene
taken by my son with a K-7 and myself with the K-x:

i was already inclining towards the k-x because of its size (it's
actually marginally smaller in dimensions than the k-m) which is much
better than the k10d ergonomically for my hands. it is also more
convenient to carry on long motorcycle rides. so your initial positive
comments about the IQ are very encouraging. :)
