It's just the usual "technology press release" alarmist nonsense, Bob
W. They've achieved their end: they caught your attention and made
you notice.

The problem they are trying to solve is digital video pirating of
cinema. That's the situation in which a camera has to be mounted in a
stable manner and operated for a long enough period of time for a
sensor system to find and recognize a recording device, and then
attempt to defeat the recording. They figure the motion picture
industry will fund this kind of research because the motion picture
industry perceives that they are losing billions of dollars annually
through pirating. The technology has potential as an anti-spy measure
as well, presuming miniature hidden digital camera emplacements in a
closed room area that a sensor can sweep, identify and defeat. The
security industry might be interested to fund further research..

Unless you have the intent of pirating movies or opening a covert
surveillance business, you have nothing to worry about.

I saw that a while back, and tbh I really can't see the point. It makes
the crazy assumption that all digital sensors reflect IR straight back
out of the lens. Even if the system can react fast enough to blind a
DSLR (it'll only be able to see the sensor when the shutter's open), you
can *trivially* defeat the whole system by putting an IR-reflecting
filter in front of your lens at a 45 degree angle.

A waste of time, IMO.

I attended a baseball match last night. It was the Yankees of New York City
visiting the Orioles of Baltimore. Very exciting game and the Orioles
managed a come-from-behind victory over the visiting New York team with a
final score of New York 6, Baltimore 7.

During the game there was a rolling advertising banner behind home plate
visible on TV during each pitch. One of the adds was for Pentax. It said
(and I am NOT making this up!) "PENTAX" in big bold red letters and below in
smaller print "Digital Cameras Endoscopes"

Granted Baltimore is the home of Johns Hopkins Medical Center, but still, it

Yes, but the thing is that M&M have been appointed that "offical candy"
status by the organization that runs the Winter Olympics, right? Probably
after paying a lot of money for it.

But who have appointed Pentax this "official" status? And who may Pentax
have paid for it? "The Internet" at large? There simply isn't such an
organization that have that kind of authority over the Internet at all.

The Internet is no company, no organization. It's just the sum of all

Pentax's is probably a little better than most. Some people will think that
implies using a Pentax digital camera is a better way than others to put
their photos on the Internet. Which I'm sure is what Pentax hopes they will
think.

Okay. Gotcha. I had no way to know.
For all I knew, someone in the industry threw that 'title' at them.
Happens all the time. Different strokes for different folks. Breakfast

No problem. I like Pentax, so it didn't bother me...

Just google "official digital camera of the internet" and see how much
negativity towards the brand it has generated within the Internet community,
For example:
"I am the official boycotter of all Pentax products. THe nerve of that

insult us with tht lame idiotic statement leaves but one response..
to never ever buy a Pentax product again. Ever.

I'm sure they'll care...
Nevertheless, I'm also sure someone at Pentax is and will be watching this.
And talking to their ad agency with some seriousness, I would hope...
the only site that you will see with a positive spin on it is, you guessed,

Ha, ha ha... Okay, you've made your point.
I stand corrected!
Sorry Peter. No hard feelings, okay?

The French have 2 words for pride: fierte, which has a positive spin,
and orgeuil which has a negative spin.

Pride is one of the deadly sins. Not that that means anything, of

Well, not that I go anywhere NEAR crocodiles (or snakes, or "Steve-O") but only
one piece of Pentax gear has ever given me problems on a trip! (The ZX-5n,
whose lens-release button went missing last year in Kentucky; fortunately I
found it in the vehicle a couple of hours later.)
So if it's aimed at selling Pentax gear to amateurs who might take a trip &
want something that won't break down, AFAIK it's truthful. And I think it might
indeed appeal.
I had an ME Super that kept shooting (but only in manual; still, it could be
used) after bouncing on limestone; a P30T that didn't give any problems
shooting in a heavy downpour; no problems with the PZ-1 when shooting near
waterfalls and having to wipe the spray off the front of the lens after every
shot.
What I think is really cool is the ad for the WR-90 that showed some guys
struggling with a tent in a major rainstorm (at least, I think they were
struggling with a tent) and said "It handles conditions that send other cameras
running for Mommy." (I guess that's a caption rather than a slogan? But I still
like it.)
And after two weeks in Jamaica -- including a trip to beach & waterfall -- with
the Optio 550 as my only camera, and bringing back nearly 800 pictures, I'd be
ready to suggest "Reliable gear for your adventures" myself if they didn't
already have it! That little camera went everywhere in my pocket (as it does at
home) and I've been extrememly pleased with the resulting pictures. I only wish
it had an 800 sensitivity or a faster lens, but that's design not reliability.
(The only shots I tried and failed at would've worked with a faster shutter
speed, hence the above remark, and I was the one who chose not to use flash for
those shots.)
I did have one photo equipment reliability problem on this trip. One of my
memory cards failed. However that is SanDisk's problem, not Pentax's, and
they're supposed to be in the process of taking care of it.

When was that? (the name change).
Unfortunately, I could only see a 300D advert, on Discovery.
But if I go in the Pentax (Focus94, there is no such thing as "Pentax
Romania") store I can see several cameras - including the *istD - and a lot
of lenses (most of them are Sigma, the only prime I can remember is their
50mm f/2.8? macro), Lowepro bags (maybe not the best, but they are nice
IMHO), filters, darkroom stuff etc. Btw: the service and a photo lab are in
the same location.
I wasn't able to find a Canon store, and the Nikon/Kodak one is empty. So,
all they have is that little advert

Frank, my wife and I went with a couple of friends in their thirties (yeah,

subtle, wry performance, and Scarlet Johansson is a good foil as the young
woman. Not schmaltzy, hilarious in parts, and a valid commentary on modern

Here in Poland, we have a very peculiar situation. On the one hand, there's
lots of Pentax advertising in photographic magazines (of the MZ-S, now the
Optios - and I mean BIG advertisements, like a full page, or back cover),
but on the other hand these products are rarely available in stores. I guess
that's what you get for having a distributor that deals mainly in wrist

Have you picked up a photo magazine lately? Nikon
and Canon advertise the crap out of their DSLRs
and digicams as well as their film offerings from
consumer to pro grade. What's so sad is that I
have yet to see an ad for the Optio S which is
such a big hit for Pentax, yet I've seen ads for
the Casio version.
That's really the flaw of the regional offices. There are constant ads in

William Robb wrote:

Kind of counter productive if you have to look for it.
Advertising is not the issue. I haven't seen a Canon or Nikon campaign
either during the past months.

The issue is the availability of gear on the shops shelves. Here Pentax
is represented by the MZ-60, MZ-6 and three standard zooms. If I want to
investigate lets say a FA 135/2.8, I have to ask on PDML "what are your
opinions on this lens". After a range of conflicting answers, I'm not
any wiser, and the only thing I can do is to mail order it. And live
with it, like it or not.

Compare this with C/N - except the "big beasts" (300/2.8 etc), I can
personally check all the lenses, play with them, mount them on a camera,
even put a roll of film through it and check home the results, and
decide if I like them or not.

As far as I'm concerned the Pentax offer is exactly what they have in
the shops.
