PESO+PESO -- KOZ

2018-06-06 Thread Bruce Walker
It was a very good morning. I shot with "KOZ", a Quebec native model,
dancer and pole dancer (she was in Toronto for a pro-level competition
and came in second) this morning. I returned to my work inspired by
Vincent Peters and Jean-Francois Jonvelle. And a bit of Ralph Gibson.

_Technically_ safe for work.

Pointe

Both shot with the 645z, FA 150mm/2.8 (newly acquired). Minimal
processing in Lightroom. No retouching.

Enjoy!

I like it. But I'n mot sure why. I'll think about and let you know.

BTW: I browsed through the other shots in your gallery and there's
some great stuff there. Several that I also like a lot without being
able to say why :)
Also - I have the counterpart to your "Thin Ice" shot. It's a picture

Russel, I feel like I must comment. You see, it was me who first asked
for "brutal and honest" comments and now you say it is a saying. I feel
almost like carved in stones of virtual eternity now ;-)...

This is very fun shot. At least to me. It took me considerable time to
realize that the bird of prey has some kind of mask on his/her head.
Before that I had to hold myself from chuckling because it felt like
"what have they done to squeeze the head of poor birdie?"

The only nit-pick I can come up with is the half-beheaded man on top left.

In terms of composition and subject matter this is a worthy effort
and is to be commended. But it's extremely muddy. There is no
separation of midtones. Most of it is a bit soft, even the bird is
not quite in focus. But you have a good eye. Work on your exposure
and rendering.

Paul Stenquist- I agree that this shot is muddy, as you say. And
since I am relatively new to this, you must pardon my silly questions.
Is the muddiness due to the B&W conversion that I use, or the color
filter I use on the B&W conversion, or is there something else that I
am missing?

and wrt to my site and choice of colors... I have had a couple others

RE: PESO - first peso

2006-07-08 Thread Shel Belinkoff
Hi,

A couple of things. The tonality is muddy and flat. At first glance it
seems that a little more contrast would be helpful. A couple of
questions/comments: have you ever seen exhibition quality B&W silver
prints? If not, hie the to a museum or gallery and see what they look like
and the various printing styles. Your DOF seems about perfect - the
background shows the people clearly enough but they're OOF enough not to
distract from the main subject. You might be able to get by with even a
little less DOF, but this works pretty well.

The black background with electric blue type is really a bad choice. The
blue is a great distraction, and black, generaslly, is not as conducive for
displaying photos as, for example, a more neutral grey. Depends, of
course, on whether the image has a border or not, too.

Re: PESO - first peso

2006-07-08 Thread Paul Stenquist
I would think the muddiness is a function of the conversion. There
are many conversion methods that work well. If you're working in
PhotoShop, try using the channel mixer for a start. Just cick on
monochrome and work with the three channels to get a pleasing effect.
Click on the monochrome button near the bottom of the channel mixer
window. Use a lot of the red channel. For many shots, at least 90% or
so. Set the constant to near zero or just a bit below. Then dial in
just a bit of green and blue. Work each slider independently in those
approximate ranges until you get a pleasing effect.
What color filter did you use? Are you shooting digital?

that's what i thought. Earlier this afternoon, I recalled someone
made a comment about a different PESO with a B&W conversion, that it
reminded him a photo that used to be color. I think that applies to
this one as well. Also, I am using google's Picasa 2.

I'm not an expert in the area of BW filtration, but I believe a green
filter will lighten foliage but darken skin tones. That could be part
of your problem. Shoot without a filter until you get yoru bearings
on a standard conversion. The less you have to deal with at first,
the better.

I do shoot filterless, I meant that was the "filter" used in the conversion

i think that it helped to highlight the bird. which i suppose needing
to highlight the bird is more evidence that Picasa isn't my best

I'm not sure. It's nice the way we can see how people react to the bird, but
I'm not sure which should be sharp - the bird or the faces or both.
Both, I guess ... Which means, that a wide angle (10-30mm) would hav been
be the better choise (greater DOF). So, I't a fine image, but would probably
have been even better with a shorter focal length.

I really like the way the sky looks and wish there'd been more of it
in this shot. I think I see what you were going after with the
tonalities, but more sky, and consequently less of the area where the

Still, I do like the basic elements of the shot.

Re: peso - just peso

2010-10-10 Thread Rick Womer
Sasha, it is very sharp and very nicely rendered, but to me there seems to be
too much conflicting geometry. The assembly at the bottom leads the eye up and
to the left, until it is stopped by the horizontal line; then the downspout
leads one up and to the right. You might try cropping out the entire bottom
whatever-it-is, and some of the sky to balance things.

Re: peso - just peso

2010-10-11 Thread Bob Sullivan
Sasha,
I think Rick's comments are onto something.
There is too much geometry for me.
Crop off the awning piping at the bottom,
or the mechanicals and sky of the top and it looks better.
As is, the picture seems to have three parts,
awning piping/hangers,
stucco wall with sloping drain pipe,
and roof mechanical structure with sky.
I can't get them to mesh...

I've been looking at this for a while, and there are really 5 maybe 6
pictures there, depending on how you crop them and almost all are
better, (I was going to say more interesting, but not really, this shot
is interesting), than the overall composition.

I would have got in bit closer and shot from a lower angle to try and
get rid of the trees in the background.

The rocks in and the waves in the centre look good, but the shape of the
rocks gets lost in the trees.

This is a pity because the light and the action of the waves is great.

Sasha, I like the overall exposure generally, but would lighten the areas of
deepest shadows somewhat. Wave action is a nice inclusion and the background
trees add to the depth and interest.

Tips? Honesty? Brutality?

Michael, the b/w version is less unsuccessful than the original color
one. Yet both seem (at least to me) to lack the evident point of focus.
It is customary to have at least one eye of a portrayed person to be in
focus. You seem to have both out of focus.

Assuming you can re-shoot, I suggest you do just that - shoot again.
Also my experience with shooting (my daughter) with FA 50/1.7 lens is
that for such kind of portraits f/4 is just about the best. It gives
enough DOF without getting too much of it.

Just my few cents and pixels.

The color version can be improved greatly with some curves adjustment
and saturation reduction. I also think you should remove the wart on
the nose and the pimples on the chin, since this is obviously a
portrait, not a news photograph. The BW version shows way too much
contrast with no shadow detail and burned highlights. Improving the
color version before you convert will yield a better BW version. The
noise doesn't add anything IMHO. Sorry I can't be more positive, but
keep working on it.

It's too soft and seems to lack a little something to make it "pop".
I'm not one to be very technical about what you can do in PS or whatever but
I'd try a slightly different angle and more DOF.
All that being said, it's not a BAD photograph. Keep posting and lets see

The shot is a bit dark. A little bit of adjustment to levels,
contrast and color correction brings it right up nicely. If you want
to get fancy, lighten the eyes just a hair more than the rest so that
they pop.

You got the eyes in sharp focus, which is exactly what you ought to
do, but the nose and chin fall out of the focus zone ... f/4 works
better at these distances. The nose and mouth are close enough to
fine that with a little selective area sharpening, it looks great.

B&W:
http://www.michaelhamilton.ca/images/jocb&w.jpg

I de-saturated, then adjusted the lightness of the spectrum. Added

Unfortunately, this is pretty murky on my screen. You can do a much
better B&W rendering after you've finished with the above adjustments
to the color rendering. I would use a channel mix of the red and
green or red and blue channels to bring the skin tones up, keep the
lips nicely differentiated, and smooth the skin texture. Then a
little selective contrast adjustment here and there to finish it off.

It's an intimate photograph of a lovely face. Worth the effort.

You're welcome, glad to help.

The sharpening is somewhat a matter of taste ... I tend to like more
texture in the skin then some, I find. I felt it a little heavy
(quick pass, didn't do much tuning), but it's done non-destructively
in the Photoshop file as a background layer copy with masking. It can
be adjusted to your taste easily. :-)

Forget the split screens. AF in low light is generally at a
disadvantage. Practice manual focusing with the standard screen. The
more you do, the better you get at it.

Hi PJ,

I assume that you know that "Pullman Square" refers to the railroad
industry? People in Huntington are very fond of railroad imagery and
themes. The design of many features of this town square are intended to
echo a railroad theme, so it's not too surprising that you found some
resemblance to a model railroad. ;-)

However, if you want to see real scale models of the area, click here:

I hope you agree that my image looks far more realistic than scale models. ;-)

Excellent! In the near perfection of the square and the bright colors in which

2005-08-11 Thread P. J. Alling
Well, yes I know about who Pullman was. It's not just the layout of the
square. Looking at the original, it looks like a noise reduction
program was used on the image at high settings and then it was over
sharpened, (at least that's what it looks like from the halos around so
many objects), to combat the softness the noise reduction imposed on the
image. This resulted in a cartoonie artificial look. It's not a bad
image, in fact it's a very good image, just looks less like a photograph
than I think it should.

Hi PJ,

I assume that you know that "Pullman Square" refers to the railroad
industry? People in Huntington are very fond of railroad imagery and
themes. The design of many features of this town square are intended
to echo a railroad theme, so it's not too surprising that you found
some resemblance to a model railroad. ;-)

However, if you want to see real scale models of the area, click here:

http://www.cityofhuntington.com/Work_and_Do_Business/ps-model.asp

I hope you agree that my image looks far more realistic than scale
models. ;-)

There was no noise reduction program used. When I converted to JPEG, I
turned off color and luminance noise reduction in Photoshop's Camera RAW
plugin. However, you're correct about the sharpening. During the conversion
from RAW, the image was set for maximum sharpness which resulted in the
halos you see around so many objects. I know this is extreme, but I liked
the look of the very sharpened image better than the look of the slightly
blurry alternative. On most of my images, I don't set the sharpness nearly
so high during conversion from RAW. I often don't sharpen at all during the
conversion. For some reason, this one image seemed more interesting to me
with the extreme sharpness setting.

I was hoping that when viewed from an appropriate distance, the halos
wouldn't be noticed. ;-)

Glen

Hi Christine,

Hmmm...this is harder than I thought :-D

First off, I just took this shot ->
http://www.bong.uni.cc/peso/2008-05.htm <- a couple of days before, so
it was lingering in my head. It's a wheel of a horse drawn carriage
(remember "Looking Back"?) and it is quite new and the details crisp.
It's sort of a "straight-on angle and from down low" simple because
the thing is quite big (the diameter is almost 4 feet).

So while I was waiting for my son to come of out school, I had my DS
with the Takumar 135/2.5 *only* (remember I was inspired by Timber to
pull it out of the bag) looking for target of opportunities. So then
the ice-cream cart got my attention; and the place was crowded with
screaming kids just out of school limiting my options in position
myself. That explains a lot the angle (besides the fact that the
wheel is about a foot and a half in diameter); it was awkward given
the situation to go low.

Then to make my life harder, I decided to move backwards to get the
whole thing; I figure I had the close up of the other wheel that it
feels like a cliché if I took another close-up. Besides, the ice
cream felt like it had a lot of stories to tell, not only its wheel.

>From then on, it was waiting for the right moment (when no kid was
running in front of the cart).

Yes, the 67 is really fun to use, in a quirky "steampunk" sort of way.

I'm curious as to what broke in your camera because the 67 doesn't
have any "rewind" mechanism...

There is a roller just to the right of the shutter. It is the metering
roller for the frame counter. If it gets turned opposite the direction of
film travel it breaks the frame counter, and thusly breaks the camera.
