Beautiful scenes, well captured, Dave. I'll bet it often looks rather
different. I can make out some of some fossilised logs in the first
image. We have some on the Transkei Wild Coast but I have but I have
never been there. I have seen museum exhibits clearly showing the

PESO: Forsythia

We are in the middle of the coldest spring in a decade, with a record low
for this date. Temperatures are below freezing, heightened by cold winds

squalls. Spring indeed.

The weather seems to have slowed the daffodils and other spring flowers.
My forsythia is nice, but the yellow blossoms are fewer than in the recent
past:

I decided not to enter this image in the PUG, but to post it separately,
because of what is happening in eastern Europe.

My father made similar eggs (though not as artistic) as a boy, and he
taught me to make them, as I did with my son. We are not Ukrainian, but
Carptho-Ruthenians (Rusyns), a small ethnic group with a related language
and similar cultural traditions. The village from which my
grandparents emigrated is in the Carpathian foothills near Uzhgorod, an
area that was then in Hungary, later in Eastern Slovakia, seized by the
Soviet Union during WWII, and later incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR by
Krushev, himself a Ukrainian. While that area, near the border with
Slovakia, has not yet been attacked or bombed, I am deeply moved by the
genocide taking place now in Ukraine.

Pysanky are icons of Ukrainian culture, and symbols of rebirth, hope and
peace. Orthodox Easter is March 24, both in Ukraine and Russia, and it
will have additional significance this year.

Re: PESO: Lake Manapouri

2022-03-04 Thread David Mann
The lockdowns have been lifted now since our vaccination rate reached its
target. We're now on a red/orange/green system to manage the load on the
hospitals. We're currently in "orange" so there are some restrictions on the
size of gatherings and some places require a vaccine pass to enter. Our region
is currently 98.8% double-vaccinated, 74.7% boosted (over-12). The rollout for
5-12s is ongoing.

The virus has been affecting families at our daughter's school so we'll
probably get it before long. There have been a few general sniffles lately as
well which is not exactly helping.

Dave

Thanks for the comments, you probably missed the first version as I overwrote
both files when I "fixed" it.

I just dug out the film... it was Fuji Provia 100F. I'd love to use my 6x7

Re: PESO: Lake Hayes

2022-02-27 Thread David Mann
I had an idea about why I may have been having trouble with the colours in the
sky. I had assigned the Adobe RGB profile to the image when it may have
actually been scanned to sRGB.

I've reassigned the profile and also applied the highlights & shadows tool
which has allowed me to keep a lot more detail in the sky. I brought out the
shadows a little but there's very little detail to be had there. Isn't slide
film wonderful.

I just overwrote the image and discarded the original. The updated version is
at the same url:

Dave

tree...and on my monitor the white in teh sky is really burned out . but I

may be overstating it because  of my problem with glare.

There is a bit more detail in the sky but I was having trouble with some slight
colour shifts so I let it blow out a bit. Haven't checked the tree but I
intended it to be a silhouette anyway.

No preference here.

Is there some detail in the tree or sky that is on the negative, but didn’t
come out in the scan?

It wasn't shot at f/4 but it's an f/4 lens :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. This was one of those situations where I
thought I had it looking right but looked at it again the next day. I've set
up my small light box but the slide does look a bit different. I might drag my
bigger lightbox out to see whether that makes any difference.

Re: PESO: My Winter Hobby

2022-02-24 Thread Stanley Halpin
Very nice Bill!

Several decades ago I took a one-year one-night-a-week evening class on wood
working, taught in a high school Shop class facility, taught by the HighSchool
instructor. I learned to use many powers tools, got to be somewhat proficient,
have since built our dining table, a couple of couches, multiple book cases,
etc. Good enough quality, but journeyman work, not master level.
The following year I took another class, this time in the use of hand tools for
wood working. Our instructor made objects like your box. I took from that class
a greater appreciation for precision, but I never developed the skill to do
really fine work myself. I am very impressed with your work!

Pentax 6x7 with 45mm f/4

The process is a bit painful; dust-spotting a 350+Mb file is not a lot of fun
