it being something for mixing and spreading something in the fields.

Yeah, could be that too. That half barrel at the back holds whatever and
the front has a PTO driven pump.

The iron wheels suggest it was pulled by a steam tractor or if it was a
tractor with IC engine, it was a very early one.

I've actually had devices that looked very similar to that identified to 
me by the owners as liquid manure spreaders.  One in particular was 
horse drawn and the pump was powered by a linage to the wheels, but the 
general layout was the same.

Looks to me like a Model 3 Doohickey, manufactured in 1911 by the 
Patootie Company of Gibson, TN.  The cylindrical shape was to keep the 
fruit from sticking in any corners of the container.  Sadly, they went 
out of business with the crash of 1929 when the bottom fell out of the 
Doohickey market.
