Re: Pentax K-3 Photo Contest Winners

2014-08-22 Thread Darren Addy
So, who is this cheekygeek guy?

No one of consequence, I assure you. Just an ol' Nebraska boy who
schlubs around with Pentax equipment.
:)

Seriously, I have been on pins and needles since the preliminary
results named me the winner. The PentaxForums admin crew has been busy
implementing a new site design (which is a big improvement, IMHO) and
so making the official announcement got pushed back until this
morning. Those here on PDML that also voted for my images deserve a
great big thank you, as well.

I appreciate the congratulations from *everyone* here as well. Thank you!

I'm chuffed to bits, to borrow a UK expression, to get my hands on
the K-3. I bought my K-5II not all that long ago (it is approaching
6000 shutter actuations) and until the price came down significantly I
was not in a position to purchase a K-3, so I tried not to look at it
too closely. That changed when the preliminary results were announced.
I read all the reviews on BH and Amazon and people are almost
universally GUSHING about the K-3. I also downloaded and printed the
manual and have been perusing it.

I've seem that many people say that the transition from a K-5II will
be easy, but I'm especially interested to see and use the following
upgrades:
• The new AF mode (which many people say makes Birds in Flight [BIF]
much easier for Pentax users)
• The switchable AA filter (I, like many people, will probably keep it
switched off but I do like the fact that they made it a bracketable
feature also)
• How 24MP compares to my existing 16MP (and how good my existing
lenses are on that sort of resolution!)
• The multi-auto-white balance feature
• The improved video options (I have not taken much video in the past,
but with this tool at my disposal, that may change)
• The fact that the built-in intervalometer now goes to 2000 (rather
than just 999). My son-in-law is doing more and more time lapse and
I'd like to give that a try more often. The downside of time lapse is
that you can't use the camera for anything else while doing it, so
that would be an argument for keeping my K-5II - though probably not a
very good one. I also have a K-01.
• The two card slots and the 16GB Pentax FluCard

BH is the provider of the K-3 body and the only K-3 body available on
their web site comes with a FREE BG-5 grip and the 16GB Pentax
FluCard. I use the grip almost all the time on my K-5II, so I was
going to miss that until I saw that it was included. I also would
probably not have ponied up a Franklin for the FluCard, but I'm sure
willing to give it a try if it is going to be given to me for free!

REALLY looking forward to next year's storm season now.

Re: OT: FILM shot wins Pop Photo contest

2011-12-27 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
I'm mostly view-camera illiterate, so I'm sure a more informed voice
could chime in here, but I'm seeing that maximum coverage is
achieved on some lenses only when stopped down significantly. On a
camera with rise, swing and tilt capability, I'm guessing that
maximum coverage could only be achieved with the lens and film back
parallel (I'm sure someone will correct me if that is inaccurate).

With regard to the 35mm lenses, yes, the Pentax Forums lens database
lists the FOV for horizontal and diagnonal for both 35mm full frame
and APS-C sensors.

Darren Addy
Kearney, Nebraska

FOV is the angle that comes in the front.
Coverage is what comes out the back.
The convention (there is no governments standard like
Watts RMS in 8 ohms, from 20-2Hz in audio) is
f22 when focused @ infinity. That gives you your minimum film plane
coverage for a lens. Many lenses are not sharp as they
get close to the edge of coverage. That is only documented
anecdotally, so it is best to have several mm extra coverage
to compensate.

So we use reference tables like this
http://www.graflex.org/lenses/lens-spec.html
to check out lens coverage. The Super Symmar XL has
plenty of coverage for 8x10.
https://www.schneideroptics.com/ecommerce/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?CID=169IID=7634
But few have the wallet. :-(

The diagonal FOV on a 20mm Takumar lens is only 94 degrees, 35mm full frame
The diagonal FOV on a 15mm Takumar lens is 111 degrees, 35mm full frame.

It is stamped on the lens as having 105 deg coverage.

There were apparently geyser fields at Steamboat Springs and Beowawe in
Nevada up until the 1980s 1990s. They were destroyed by drilling to
create geothermal power plants.

There are other minor geyser fields in the Western US. I think they're
all outliers of whatever created Yellowstone.

Learned something today. Never even heard of plasmats before.

That (winning) shot looks FAR wider (to my eyes) than a 24mm on a 35mm
film camera.
I was looking at the specs and comparing the field of view it gives to
the equiv. focal length with similar field of view on a 35mm.
Not sure if that's the proper way to compare apples and oranges, but
when the lens specs say 105 degree maximum coverage I'm guessing
that would be most like the diagonal FOV on a 35mm lens.

The diagonal FOV on a 24mm Takumar lens is only 84 degrees, 35mm full frame.
The diagonal FOV on a 20mm Takumar lens is only 94 degrees, 35mm full frame
The diagonal FOV on a 15mm Takumar lens is 111 degrees, 35mm full frame.

So extrapolating, it looks like the FOV would be similar to an 18mm
lens on a 35mm full frame.

If that's not the proper way to look at it, I'd welcome a correction.

I don't know the answer to your question. But I am curious about one thing in
your note - when others talk about FOV, I have always visualized the horizontal
coverage as the issue. I just looked at Wikipedia for FOV info and they point

I should add that FOV is really only a perfect comparison to use when
comparing similar ratio rectangles (or other shape). It's not just a
function of the lens but the image circle crop.

With that in mind some adjustment would be needed to strictly compare
a 4x5 (or similar ration 8x10) view camera lens FOV with a 24x36mm
35mm frame (which would need to be 24x30mm to be a straight-across
comparison).

I think all lenses do get an increased image circle as it is stooped
down. Generally this is only important to the large format user who
depends on a large image circle to allow the use of camera movements.
Often, in order to cover the entire format when using significant tilt
of the lens or shifting of the lens or film, the lens also needs to be
stopped down to secure coverage of the corners of the film

2011-12-26 Thread Paul Ewins
Actually a lot of the newer lenses don't get much in the way of extra coverage
as they are stopped down wheras some of the older designs get a huge amount.
The difficulty is defining coverage, since a lot of the older lenses get very
soft at the edges. In some cases older examples of the same design will have
more coverage than newer ones since the manufacturers have tweaked them to
reduce the image circle so that the edges don't get too soft. If you are
contact printing from an ULF neg, say 12x20, then you really don't need much
resolution but if you are doing mural prints from 4x5 the you will want it to
be bleedingly sharp across the entire neg. The 8x10 and ULF guys will often
distinguish between the area that is illuminated and the area that is covered,
with coverage being a subjective measurement based on the photographer's own
requirements for sharpness. The phrase YMMV gets used a lot in discussions of
LF lenses.

I started to brows through this gallery. It's a bit awkward to see both
the image and the technical data (at a size that's possible to read), and
that's on a 1920x1200 resolution screen. Maybe I should try rotating my
secondary display to a portrait orientation ...

I must admit that while I was perusing the first half a dozen images the
recent observations here about the prevalence of highly-saturated images
came to my mind. By the time that BW image came along I was ready for it.
And the twelfth image made an interesting statement about colour, too.

I'll look through some more of the images when I've got a few less things
to do (assuming we can tear ourselves away from Skyrim, that is :-).

P.S. That 12th image appears to duplicate the caption from the 2nd image.

No. 300mm is the 8x10 normal so 150mm is like a 24mm on 135, or roughly 18mm
on the Pentax DSLR. It is not rectilinear at all. It is a true plasmat wide
angle with a normal rendering. Plasmats have the best image rendering but are
not very fast. The rare symmetricals wider than 5.6 have a glow and even 5.6
can be questionable in certain situations. Of the 5 LF lenses I own, 2 are
plasmats, 2 are Tessars, and 1 (BL/Zeiss Protar VII) is especially unique.

yeah, the issue is that when we look at a photo we look for the thing in
focus and think that is the subject. In the shot in question, by this
logic, the peanuts on the bench appear to be the subject. If the Jay was
the only thing in the photo, I could maybe grant a little wiggle room on
the focus, but then the problem might be someone else delivering a shot
where the bird was in perfect focus, and I'd go with that one. Not
knowing the relative quality of the typical Markham Fair submissions,
though, I would be hard for me to make that call.

The short answer would then be, as always, it depends.

If it were my shot, I'd probably wait for next year, but I'm way too
critical of my own work.

Yes, Dave, the Jay blur is substantial and too general. Actually, I'm not
certain it's not focus blur, do to its not being most apparent in those areas

the one i like for the wild bird class, but am bothered by this bit of
softness, which does not really show up at web sizes so i just noticed
it when i printed it out.

Question to the judges on the list, would this be a deal breaker or

The starling is a dramatic catch. Both the blur and posture create the drama.
Would have been great if the frame had contained an obvious challenge..ie, a

yeah, the issue is that when we look at a photo we look for the thing in
focus and think that is the subject.
Not knowing
the relative quality of the typical Markham Fair submissions, though, I
would be hard for me to make that call.

The short answer would then be, as always, it depends.

If it were my shot, I'd probably wait for next year, but I'm way too
critical of my own work.

I do prefer this pic to the other jay shots aesthetically, but I do have to
agree that the softness goes beyond motion blur. You might be able to tweak it
a bit with some more unsharp mask, but it will probably never look critically
sharp.

Well as I said earlier I'd go with 6034... the jay with the squirrel
make it the most interesting and the least likely to look like someone
elses merely pretty shot of a bird taking off or landing...

I like the swans but that is a bit cliche too and the light isnt that

Love the cat portrait behind the screen - simple and elegant.

the flower I like best is 62 - the rose against the wall.

and in people category - the little girl helping the firefighters
looks like a winner to me.

Based on the show I judged recently, whether it seems a little soft
and whether that is going to count against it depends a lot on

a) what it is up against in the competition
b) what talks to the viewpoint of the judge

A certain level of technical merit/competenchy has to be there in the
photo, but once there things get trickier.

I had several cases of very good photographs that were competing for a
prize in this recent exhibition. My overall take on what I felt had
more merit had to do with the level at which a particular photograph
communicated a message to me, the viewer, and in most cases those were
easy to rank in a category. However, in two cases there were several
equally appealing photographs competing for the same award, and in
those cases I had to reach to specific technical merits to rank one
over the other.

If you're trying to portray jays in flight, the motion blur here is
a little much. If, on the other hand, you're looking to portray food
desirable to jays swooping in, it becomes more approachable. How
exactly you would cue the viewer as to that second intent is an
exercise left to the reader... ;-)

I haven't read any replies as I write this.
6034 is my choice of the three, the background blur is better, which
makes the bird stand out a bit more.
Charmi likes 6037 more. She likes how the bird is more visible and
spread out.

I'll see how i did in the digital then.

I entered 10 in digital and 18 in prints(6 BW and 12 colour). I';ll

Warning for the squeamish, some shots are with the Nikon cameras.

Yes, but not that much. Mostly D2H, D200 and the K10D.

But I am clueless about the good/bad of contests -- just thought I'd pass it

years ago with the 6x7 and Pentax SMC 300/4. You can access all the
 contest winners here: http://info.detnews.com/joyrides/index.cfm

RE: Dream Cruise Photo Contest

2007-08-22 Thread Bill Sawyer
I picked up a copy of the Detroit News this morning, and while flipping
though the sections, my eye caught the upper left corner of section F, the
auto section. There, in gorgeous color, was a photograph I had seen several
time before, and always admired. Sure enough, the caption confirmed it, Paul
Stenquist had won the Dream Cruise Photo Contest!

Congratulations, Paul, it's well deserved.

I'm one of ten winners in the Detroit News Dream Cruise Photo Contest. My

All I get is a black Flash Window with YOUR PRESENTATION WILL BEGIN
AFTER THIS MESSAGE - no message, no presentation.
Yeah. I've run into this before and if memory serves that was also with
a Washington Post flash presentation. The flash is coming from some
advertiser rather than from the Washington Post itself.

The MESSAGE that precedes the PRESENTATION comes from one of the ad
sites blocked by my hosts file. My computer is looking for the data to
 come from IP 127.0.0.1

 - so, no message, no presentation
