Re: Photo competitions list

2004-11-17 Thread Jostein
Kevin,
just got this in my email. Maybe something for your list?
Haven't checked up on possible ripoffs, and the "previous
communications" was a similar letter from them a year ago...:-)

Cheers,
Jostein

Dear photographer, naturalist, mountaineer:

As you must already know from our previous communications, the period
for the presentation of slides in order to take part in the special
2004 edition of our mountain and nature slide competition will expire
on December 10th.

Many photographers from all over the world have already sent us their
slides in order to be able to take part in the said competition. If
you haven't done so yet, you are still in time to opt for any of the
prizes we shall be handing out this year: a first prize (the
traditional prize) for mountain, flora, fauna, sport, landscape, etc.
images; and a special prize for slides on rock climbing and the world
of verticality.

Nevertheless, you may obtain information on prizes, competition
rules, application form, image gallery, records, itinerant exhibition,
etc. at www.memorialmarialuisa.com, and we shall be at your disposal
to clarify any query you may have, both concerning the competition and
the exhibition.

Remember that you have until December 10th (postmark date), but it is
better not to leave things to the last minute. You may send either
original slides or quality duplicates. In either case, even if they
are awarded prizes, they will be returned to you.

Thank you for your attention and possible participation. We would
also be grateful if you could forward this invitation to any people or
associations you know that may be interested in mountain and nature
photography.

 Kind Regards.

We have sent you this message even though you have not requested it.
If you do not wish to receive this message concerning future editions,
please reply and indicate "Remove" in the subject field. We apologise
for any inconvenience caused.

Hi Kevin, good idea.

BTW, does Pentax sponsor any competitions? Like Canon and Nikon do.
There is a nikon one with deadline end of this year, it's
(fortunately) open to all photographs on 35mm and or smaller digital.
Unfortunately the prize might be just Nikon photo equipmment ;-( I
can add it to the list.

Yes, I think this is the key, I will add a small note that folks should
read the contest conditions before entry.

Hi Kevin,

Sorry, editing decision is up to you. I don't mind being it a full
list even with shady competitions. At least the real good ones will
attract less people and there will be more chances of winning ;-)

No, really, I don't care. I just wanted to point out these to the PDML
people.

It is certainly nice of you to do this list. I hope it will grow, we
can make it so.

Kevin,

Creating such a compendium is a Good Thing. Editing it is not so good. It
really should be up to the individual photographer to read the terms of the
contest and make their own decision. After all, some photogs may be very
happy to give up certain rights to their photos for whatever reason, others
may be more cautious. I just don't think it's the job of the list maker to
be an editor and to decide for others how their work should be handled.

If some things really bother you about a contest, perhaps a small
disclaimer could be amended to those listings

I thought about this and there were some competitions where _all_ entries
became the property of the person/company running it, usually image libraries.
I thought this was a bit too much. I think for others, where they payment, or
'prize' is simply some gift vouchers or even a mere $100.00, my way of thinking
was that this would be up to the individual photographer to value their
own work. Whilst I may not myself pariticipate in such a contest, others
may feel it a good opportunity to get published, perhaps some practice at
a subject they have difficulty with, or even just a fun subject where the
prize is not of concern.

I would very much like to hear from anyone else on this and if the
sentiment is to remove such contests, I will do so. I really would not
know where to draw the line.

Kind regards
Kevin

OTOH, some of them are really sneaky. It includes some "competitions"
which are simply ripoffs. Like the "Cohasset Colonials Photography
Competition", giving your picture to an advertising of some furniture
for mere 100$, and not even in cash, but in gift certificate! Same is
the "2005 Shaker Workshops Photography Competition". Clear ripoffs.
Perhaps you should remove them from the list? Of course that's up to
you.

I've poked around and noted some galleries "call for submissions",
some of which require a "processing fee" just to submit a proposal.
It's usually (I suppose) a nominal fee of around $25, but it still
seems a rip-off.

Another gallery I saw charges per piece to ~show~ stuff. I mean,
they'll get a healthy commission if you sell; if their curator isn't
doing his/her job, and they put crap up on the walls that doesn't
sell, they shouldn't still make money, should they?

I guess that's capitalism in action - you don't like the rules, you
don't submit. If they don't get enough/any submissions, they'll have
to lower/eliminate such fees. I'll do my part for the process by not
submitting to those places.

cheers,
frank

Those are not the only ones

The "International Library of Photography" is a kin to a likewise free
entry to a monthly
contest for poetry. This is a real scam. They just play on people's egos
- you'll make the
finals and get a chance to buy a book of photos for an outrageous price
because you MIGHT win something yadayadayada...

They pester you forever, too, and your info, I'm sure gets sold.

I'd take it off the list as well... or put it up with a warning..
