Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ronaldo, I am Brazilian and
I live in the city of Fortaleza, Ceara. I am a Canon user and recently, through

Portfolio Presentation?

2002-11-14 Thread Paul Jones
Hi,

I have to put together a folio of around 12-15 images, the prints will be
8x10s, i've got that far!

But now my next hurdle is how to display them, so i'm after assistance from
the group!

My current thought process is to make them into some sort of book (spiral
bound). With all the images mounted in black card (12" square?) and the
mounts used as the book pages,. I though i'd make the pages square so that
it would allow for some shots to be horizontal and some vertical. (i'm just
throwing ideas out here).

Any ideas greatly appreciated?

Thanks,
Paul Jones

Welcome Ronaldo!
One of the best things about shooting with Pentax is all of the
excellent older lenses that you can use easily on it. With the Pentax
in-body image stabilization, all of those older lenses become even
more useful than they were originally!

Looking forward to seeing examples of your work!

Welcome to the group!
Every camera system has its advantages and disadvantages. Most of the members
here have chosen to use Pentax gear, but most are also interested in and
familiar with other camera systems. So the discussions are by knowledgable
people, not people just making empty claims based on their brand enthusiasm. On
the other hand, the discussions often go way off track! Be prepared to either
spend time reading much that is irrelevant or using the delete button.

I glanced at your flickr link - you will find that several in the group are
racers or former racers who have done extensive race photography.

I was pretty meh about the new camera but that presentation was very
appealing. I' kinda want one now. Not that I'm going to get one. I'll
probably have to wait until the K40 or 50D to justify a new camera.
He didn't mention the 20FPS burst mode either... hmmm.
Honestly, I'd like a much better noise situation with the high ISO shooting
in the K10 (the *istD was better here) but other than that, the K10 is great
for me so far.

Finally got my speaker to work on the PC to listen to the presentation.

Impressive.

I like several features, the various modes adjustments, like Portrait,
bright etc, IR filter, and the extra features of the Raw button, plus
live view might have some use.

One caution, i used the Vivid mode on the D200 a few times and you
have to watch what your shooting. It was good on a bright day, but
slight overcast made the shots look a bit weird. However that may have
been because i only had A channel firmware upgraded, and not B
channel. Not sure if that makes a difference in picture quality or
not. No one at Nikond1 dot net knew for sure.

I didn't buy a K10, the resolution increase wasn't enough to tempt me
and most of the other improvements though nice, didn't really enhance my
shooting style, so I was waiting for a the price to drop. It just about
hit my buy point when the K20 was being bandied about, so I decided to
wait and see what it looked like. Now I'm going to have to find the
money to buy a K20.

Re: PK20D presentation

2008-01-24 Thread Ken Waller
It's hard to objectively justify the added cost of the K20D over the K10D.
I have a K10D but the added features of the K20D sure are attractive.
The biggest single plus is probably the increased file size, allowing bigger
print size without loss of quality.
But the other new features sure are pulling @ my wallet.

I can't afford it at the moment. To much going on it the lens department. I
have already bought a 50-135 and a 18-250. I can also see myself with a
16-50. And more temptations to come.
So I'll wait and see what happenes with price. The higher ISO is what really
makes me temped. Could become very usefull with my long lenses. I also see
the benefit of Live View when it comes to focusing long MF lenses. The most
sensible thing would probably be to disconnect myself from internet. Pretend
there is no new camera.

What I understood is as following: it iscompatible with all K10D
accessories which means:
* it will take the same screens as the K10D
* it will use the same battery
* it will use the same grip
etc...

So those chosing/needing both camera should love that, I think.

What are you showing? How often will it change?

I think the slickest way to do it is with a print box. You can get
them from

http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/

Find the link to portfolio boxes.

People like to pick things up and look at them. If you're meeting with
several people at once, they don't have to crowd around a book.

[OT] Mamiya ZD presentation

2006-04-03 Thread Sylwester Pietrzyk
Today, thanks to the biggest Polish photo portal I had an opportunity
to be on official Polish presentation of Mamiya ZD - for these who
are not aware - 22 megapixel medium format DSLR ;-) The camera
appeared to be a very interesting tool for professional photographers
(with its price around 1 Euros it won't rather find place among
amateurs ;-) The body had some nice features like dual card slots (CF
and SD), had good ergonomics, felt very nice in hand especially that
it is around size and weight of Pentax 645 - this means around size
and weigth of hi-end 35 mm bodies. Just LCD was far too small for
today's standards - only 1.8". With camera there was presented Mac
software for it, enabling "tethered shooting" (taking photographs and
sending them directly to computer) among other interesting features.
ZD 120/4 macro lens was mounted on ZD, and while it was top
performing glass 9See samples below), I was less than impressed by
its build quality - one class lower than Pentax FA645 120/4 macro.
During presentation visitors had an opportunity to try the camera
themselves. You could take either macro photos of car model or do
some portraits of model. Fortunately I had my SD card with me so I
gave ZD a try taking shots of beautiful model. Photos were saved as
RAWs (MEF format - each file around 35 MB), then converted to .DNG
and slightly edited in Lightroom to be finally exported as high
quality JPEGs. If you are interested in how good can look photos from
22 MPix MF DSLR you can download them from my page. I put two samples
with low-res previews as target linked photos are ~4 MB each
compressed (61 MB after decompression) so it is better to save them
to your local disk and open in your favourite photo editing
application. Colour space of target photos is Adobe RGB. Here they are:

http://nasdwoje.e9.pl/pictures/MamiyaZD.html
Of cource for hardcore lovers - I can send RAWs straigth from the
camera ;-)
Now let's wait for presentation and samples from Pentax 645D. I bet
it can be even more impressive machine than ZD ;-)

Cheers,
Sylwek

i use mat board and it's thick material. 1 inch may not be quite enough if
you also have laminated tear sheets.

2006-02-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
For a long time I've been wanting to add the dimensionality of music
to my photo presentations. I decided to try an application that
generates slide shows integrated with sound, and is very very fast to
set up. The resulting output seems fast in a browser and plays well.

I put together one presentation with my PAW 2005 gallery images. If
you want to give it a try and give me some feedback, take a look at

  http://www.gdgphoto.com/PAW2005/
It does use Flash, but hopefully you'll find it tasteful.

thanks in advance

Today, thanks to the biggest Polish photo portal I had an opportunity
to be on official Polish presentation of Mamiya ZD - for these who
are not aware - 22 megapixel medium format DSLR ;-) The camera
appeared to be a very interesting tool for professional photographers
(with its price around 1 Euros it won't rather find place among
amateurs ;-) The body had some nice features like dual card slots (CF

it is around size and weight of Pentax 645 - this means around size
and weigth of hi-end 35 mm bodies.
I put two samples

to your local disk and open in your favourite photo editing
application. Colour space of target photos is Adobe RGB. Here they are:

http://nasdwoje.e9.pl/pictures/MamiyaZD.html
Of cource for hardcore lovers - I can send RAWs straigth from the

Now let's wait for presentation and samples from Pentax 645D. I bet
it can be even more impressive machine than ZD ;-)

Get them professionally matted, and make sure they put on those little
metal corners.

Tell them what you're doing, otherwise they might leave the edges a
bit rough.

RE: Q!Re: Portfolio Presentation?

I use albums.

Bigger mats look cooler, but obviously take up more space. 8x10's on
11x14 mats is a pretty good compromise.

You still haven't said what you're showing.

to my photo presentations. I decided to try an application that
generates slide shows integrated with sound, and is very very fast to
set up. The resulting output seems fast in a browser and plays well.

Godders - love the idea but the mixes (dissolves) between shots are far
too fast! I don't mind you cramming as many shots as you can into a
presentation, but as a bare minimum, I would say 4 seconds, and it
varies with different pictures - some I would give 3 times that. Note
that music, although complimentary, is another stimulus for the senses,
and makes things go seemingly quicker. Try a presentation with/without
music to compare relative 'speeds'.

You may also find that when putting images (still or otherwise) to
music, there is no formula. It has to come from the heart - the
transition of image with music has to 'feel' right. That's the golden
rule with these things - if it feels right, it *is* right :-)

I once edited a series of 4 minute news items on a UK picture agency
(Popperfoto) that included many stills images and editing them to music
was one of the hardest, yet one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

  Cotty

2006-02-20 Thread Don Sanderson
Godfrey, it's wonderful!
I agree with Cotty though, just as I begin to "get into" one
of the photos, it quickly disolves to the next.
I feel myself rushing to see the pic before it's gone, which
doesn't quite fit with the lovely Counting Crows tune.
Keep at it, it's a great start.

From: Shel Belinkoff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Doesn't work for me. Sound sputters, screen shows a couple-three
pics than

remains black. Oh well ... maybe it's not dial-up friendly.

Yes, it requires broadband bandwidth. I haven't found anything that
does a decent job of presenting AV with a dialup connection, at least
not without hanging around for a very long time waiting for the data
to download. This is a "small" photo presentation and constitutes
about 7Mbytes of compressed images and sound. It's not a replacement
for a still image web gallery.

From: Jens Bladt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

It's beautiful, Godfrey - it really adds a dimention - at least!
I often wnted to thry this myself.
But tell me, how do you handle the Copyright/Coda issue ? Is it you
playing

and singing?

Thanks Jens.

LOL ... That's certainly not *ME* singing and playing.

This test isn't going to up for long. I'm unsure of the details as
yet, but for anything that I'm going to put up as part of my work
I'll have to make the judgement as to whether it constitutes Fair Use
or otherwise requires a contract for permissions.

I've skimmed this and found it reasonably useful as a starting point:
  http://www.lib.utsystem.edu/copyright/index.html

From: Cotty <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Godders - love the idea but the mixes (dissolves) between shots are
far

too fast! ...
You may also find that when putting images (still or otherwise) to
music, there is no formula. ...
I once edited a series of 4 minute news items on a UK picture agency
(Popperfoto) that included many stills images and editing them to
music
was one of the hardest, yet one of the most rewarding things I've
ever done.

I agree completely and thank you for the comments! This particular
presentation was simply a test-demo to see how the generator worked:
I grabbed my entire PAW 2005 image gallery, added leader and trailer
image pages, and integrated it with "Colorblind" with no other
editing ... mostly I was looking to see how it played for others. The
software (SoundSlides) allows varying the timing for each frame to
coordinate with the music or with a custom audio track, which is
really what I plan to do with this idea.

My brother's in music production so we might collaborate on these
things at some point.

From: Rob Studdert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Seems to work quite well however the track (naturally) has a fairly
obvious
left channel bias (piano) which was a little off-putting initially,
I don't
know if altering the channel balance would be viable but for anyone
who's not
familiar with the track it's a bit strange. Also the musical
attribution should

read "Counting Crows".

Thanks for the correction. I'll likely not bother to correct it as I
don't think I'll have this one up there for more than today. It's
served the purpose of my test. :-)

From: Don Sanderson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Godfrey, it's wonderful!
I agree with Cotty though, just as I begin to "get into" one
of the photos, it quickly disolves to the next.
I feel myself rushing to see the pic before it's gone, which
doesn't quite fit with the lovely Counting Crows tune.
Keep at it, it's a great start.

Thanks Don!

Thank you all once againfor your comments.

best,
Godfrey

Excellent. The music is perfect. Some of the transitions in the first
half dozen shots were a bit uneven and some of the pics seemed to
switch off quicker than others. Could be this computer. I watched it on
my G3 700 laptop. Safari browser. Very, very nice. The whole is greater

It never hurts to ask. Sometimes rights are released with very little
other than an attribution if the thing you want to do with the music
is a) not going to be particularly profitable, b) will show the music
in a good light, c) does not conflict with other public uses of the

I'm no musician. If I have to make music from MIDI and turn it into
MP3, I'll call my brother! Otherwise, I'd use GarageBand, which comes
with Apple systems as part of the iLife package.

Which software are you using - it's seems like Macromedia?

The software I used to create this presentation is SoundSlides,
http://www.soundslides.com/. It's a Mac OS X application that takes a
folder of JPEG files and an MP3 or AIFF file and integrates them
together. It has tools for controlling the pacing of the presentation
and some basic capabilities to change the playing look. It generates
a Flash compatible presentation.

I've done this using iMovie and iTunes, built DVDs using iDVD (all
part of iLife) but it's more time consuming to build what I want than
SoundSlides.

That's kind of the nature of an AV presentation, mike. Of course,
once all the data and images are downloaded, you can grab the slider
and just click through the images at will, without the music playing.

Have no idea. I don't have Netscape installed (would be the Mac OS X
version if I did). I don't think it does anything like defining
screen size. It's an embedded object in a browser window that calls
the Flash player, and is designed to be integrated into web pages non-
destructively.

Godfrey,

Interesting how the music completely changes the way I
perceive some of the photos. It's rather melancholy
music, and some of the photos I had perceived as
contented and peaceful (people basking in the sun, for
example) conveyed loneliness instead when viewed with
the music, for example.

Personally, I prefer having the photos by themselves.

Yes. I especially hate it when just opening a page blasts music which
is too loud to begin with at me. That's why I set it NOT to auto-

I can see several ways to improve things to fit the duration of a

obvious thing to do would be to either combine several pieces of
music into the audio. Another thought would be to combine some images

I mentioned it before: "SoundSlides" is the generating application.
It's very reasonably priced and very simple to use. See details at:

I believe it is only available for Mac OS X.

I know what you mean. An AV presentation is much "hotter" than a show
of still images without audio or timed presentation, and affects
perception a lot more intensely. On the one hand, the artist
presenting the AV presentation can deliver more of what his/her
intent is, but on the other hand, the 'cooler' presentation gives
more control to the viewer.

I see them as two different things, complementary to each other. One
does not obviate the other. :-)

Something that I'm not sure anyone got reviewing the responses is the
fact that once the download has fully completed, you don't have to
press the play button. You can grab the slider and just walk through
the images at your own pace, without audio accompaniment. If I put
different captions in each image file, you can look at the specific
captions and attributions that way too. I suspect that I'll have to
add that as a note to the user when I do some finished work with this
presentation engine.

Interesting how the music completely changes the way I

the music, for example.

Personally, I prefer having the photos by themselves.

It never hurts to ask. Sometimes rights are released with very little
other than an attribution if the thing you want to do with the music
is a) not going to be particularly profitable, b) will show the music
in a good light, c) does not conflict with other public uses of the
music, and d) you manage to contact the right person who wants to be
helpful.

Hi!

For a long time I've been wanting to add the dimensionality of music to
my photo presentations. I decided to try an application that generates
slide shows integrated with sound, and is very very fast to set up. The
resulting output seems fast in a browser and plays well.

I put together one presentation with my PAW 2005 gallery images. If you
want to give it a try and give me some feedback, take a look at

  http://www.gdgphoto.com/PAW2005/
It does use Flash, but hopefully you'll find it tasteful.

Godfrey, I find it tasteful though the speed with which it pages through
the images is slightly too fast for my perception.

Ok Godfrey, this is what I think.
The page is simple but efficient, the beauty of your photos match with
the music you have chosen. The only thing that could be changed is time
between photos perhaps one or one and a half second more, because they
deserve to be looked at.

Thanks for letting us know.

Jens,

I talked to my brother this evening. Regards getting MP3 from MIDI,
keep in mind the basic concept:

  MIDI == instructions
  MP3 == compressed sound

So you need to have some way to "play" your instructions to a device
such that the device renders the sound which can then be rolled into
an MPEG-3 codec for compression.

He uses Pro Tools, Logic, and several other sound programs to do his
work in mixing and rendering sound for various targets. He said, for
casual use, GarageBand on Mac OS X is probably the way to go. One
notch above that is Logic Express for those who are doing more
sophisticated sound work.

I also asked him about the rights to the music I want to embed in
photographic presentations. He said, simply, "Call the Harry Fox
Agency in New York. They run virtually the entire business of music
rights and releases in the United States and probably a good bit of
the rest of the world. They'll give you the whole scoop on what is or
isn't a Fair Use situation, and whether a release to use a particular
piece of music can be had for peanuts or diamonds.

The overpowering inevitability of modern life in the background is a bummer

2004-07-06 Thread Ryan Lee
Hi Cory,

Thanks for being the first to review them! I myself would be quite
hard-pressed to find a favourite photo or type, there was just so many
things to shoot! I'm relooking at what I put up, and flavour of the moment
is 00990023.jpg (an action shot), just because I don't usually shoot action
scenes. I must add that the children were great to work with as well, eager
and not as camera shy as so many kids tend to be. The kid in the last pic
0137.jpg particularly was a little joy. She posed quite happily and
asked if she'll could see the pics when I was done, and now I have to make
sure she gets a print of the shot she posed for..

About modern life in the background, yes, that was a drag. I passed on a few
shots because the cars would just show up too obviously. However, this
wasn't a major gathering, just a tourney, so the location wasn't special. I
missed something major the day before, where there was a coronation, and
that would have been great to shoot. The one -really- to be at though, is
Rowany Festival, held every easter:

http://www.sca.org.au/mailman/listinfo/festival

and that's in the woods somewhere.

:)

My first presentation:
http://home.iprimus.com.au/heygoose/SCA/index.htm

So finally, I got my shots back from the lab and put together a small
presentation, as promised. It was a day out with the SCA (Society of
Creative Anachronism) Australia http://sca.org.au/, thanks to my friends
Simon and Jayne (00960006.jpg). About the SCA- picture Camelot IRL.. Yes,
complete with a King and a Queen, Baron, Baroness, Lords, Ladies, peasants
etc.

Amongst other things, I learnt that Australia, together with New Zealand,
forms the Kingdom of Lochac (pronounced lock-ark), and Brisbane is also the
Barony of River Haven. Days activities included fights, a feast, court, etc.
Apart from the adherence to customs (manner, etiquette, instances of speech
even), it was all in good fun, and being immersed in it was a real
experience (yes I was in 'garb').

Someone was telling me that for the girls, it was all about the dresses
(gosh it was like walking around in a pre-Raphaelite painting), and for the
guys it was about getting to kick butt- doesn't that just sound like a
perfect formula?

Anyway. I spent my time snapping up shot after shot after shot, 3 rolls of
(my mistakenly bought, instead of Fuji Press) Superia 1600, 3 rolls of
Superia 400, 1 roll of HD2, on a MZ5n with a Sigma EX 28-70 2.8 (sometimes

Actually it wasn't that much work, the images were straight back from the
lab, and the gallery was generated by PSCS. The real downside is paying for
the development and scanning while thinking at the back of my mind it
would't be practically free if I had an istD!

Although, you do remind me that I need to fix up some of the shots, mainly
contrast masking for shadowed faces.

Thanks for looking through them Jens :)

Cheers,
Ryan

PS. And do share your April shots when you're done!
