Re: AF500FTZ vs. AF360GFZ on an *ist-Ds
Another option is the Sigma EF 500 DG super. You get P-TTL, high speed synch and a guide number of 160 at 105mm, which is quite a bit more pop than the AF360 FTZ.. BH sells it for $199.95. I ordered one just the other day and expect it today. I prveiously had the Sigma EF 500 DG ST, which is equally powerful but has no bells and whistles. Not as well made as my Pentax AF400T, which I will continue to use for a lot of things, but it's decent. It's essentially the tried and proven workhorse among Pentax's nicer flashes. And you can find them on eBay for under $200 sometimes. I'm still debating on dedicated flash units. It would be nice to have one flash that did everything the body could support. Does the Sigma support second curtain sync and wireless mode same as the 360? is it well made enough to not feel like it was going to fall apart in a year? The Pentax 360 and 500 units are very nicely made, but my dealer doesn't carry the Sigma line to compare them. RE: AF500FTZ vs. AF360GFZ on an *ist-Ds
David, the AF360fgz, as well as being a smaller guide number, has another limitation - it only has bounce, no swivel. Therefore if shooting in a portrait framing mode, you can't bounce the flash of the ceiling and you are still stuck with direct flash. Personally, the whole wireless thing was all too complex for me. Now, my AF360fgz is my backup flash, and the AF500ftz is my workhorse. It is also the only flash that has come any near providing consistent accurate exposure for me when used together with the Starkist. Tan. Re: AF500FTZ vs. AF360GFZ on an *ist-Ds
My Sigma EF-500 DG Super arrived this afteroon, and I've done some testing. I have to say that i'm very impressed. It does high speed synch, trailing curtain shutter, P-TTL, contrast control, exposure compensation, etc. It seems to support all of the functions of the AF 360GFZ with output that's close to that of the AF 500FTZ. The head tilts and swivels unlike the 360, which apparently provides tilt only. This is important when taking vertical format pics and bouncing the flash. The build quality seems quite good. I tested the high speed synch, the trailing curtain shutter synch and the p-TTL operation at a variety of exposures and distances. All of the shots appeared to be properly exposed on the *istD lcd screen. Paul I'm still debating on dedicated flash units. It *does* support wireless mode and second-curtain sync. Construction seems very solid. Probably *better* than my AF400 FTZ, but I haven't had an AF500 FTZ or AF360 FTG so I can't say how it compares to those. -- Mark Roberts Photography and writing www.robertstech.com

Thanks for all the comments on the Sigma. I think I'll go for one ... it's the same price as the 360, the swivel head and additional power is well worth it to me. Godfrey __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
