He's done some excellent work, good stuff!

Good to hear Stef's getting into it. A Canon 1D should be a fine
shooter. The good lenses are a bit pricey but are solid performers.

The galling part is that big wide shot of the stadium was done blind,
camera over head, one of about 6, minor rotation correction and very
very slight crop to compensate.

Tan, he's 16.

The long shots are on a crappy 70-200 pump-action zoom and the wider
stuff is all 18-55.

Agreed, that's just an excellent shot. But throughout he shows an
ability to get in a close and fill the frame with people (even with
wide lenses), which most people take time to develop.

Nice pics.
The Canon is a good choice. Four megapixels is plenty for newspaper 
photography, and, as you said,  the eight frames per second speed is essential. 
Now he just needs something along the lines of a 400/2.8. Save your pennies!

Nothing wrong with 4mp, i still use my 3mp D1H with good results.
