RE: Enabled: world's smallest 35mm SLR
Congrats, Mickey. You are right - 40mm is a lovely focal lenght. The diagonal of a 35mm neg is close to 43.3mm. I suppose it's very close to what we might call a normal lens - neither wide angle nor telephoto. The biggest issue is the depth of the camera bodies as far as being able to slip them into a pocket. I've been able to slide the MX into a large shirt pocket. Can't do that with the *ist because it's thicker. The *ist is quite a bit lighter, however. Shel I think the *ist wins if you put the words autofocus, mass production in the description. Re: Re: Enabled: world's smallest 35mm SLR
My friend Elmo, in his grandmother's basement ... but seriously, there may be some very small prototypes that were made at one time that never went into mass production. For example, Pentax has made a number of prototypes and some very small production runs of some lenses that never found their way to mass production. Re: Re: Enabled: world's smallest 35mm SLR
I'll buy that! One of the problems my wife and I have is finding stuff that fits both of us. She's 5 feet tall, and I'm 6 feet. We've been talking about building a house and can't decide on counter height. Whenever we buy a car, it has to fit her (she often can't see over the dash on American models). I end up with too little leg room. The *ist, however has been a perfect match. It's small enough that she enjoys using it, but with the battery grip it's about the right size for me. This has been one of my favorite configurations lately: http://twosixteen.com/gallery/index.php?id=279 On 2/20/06, mike wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Scott Loveless [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2006/02/20 Mon PM 02:36:19 GMT To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Subject: Re: Re: Enabled: world's smallest 35mm SLR On 2/20/06, mike wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think the *ist wins if you put the words autofocus, mass production in the description. RE: Enabled: world's smallest 35mm SLR
I borrowed the world's smallest tagline from Pentax marketing, LOL, but I should have added auto-focus. I think Minolta made the same claim for their Maxxum 5. The big puzzle, to me, is why does Pentax say the DA 40mm does not work on 35mm? Mounted on a 35mm body, the small size and nice focal length makes a wonderful carry around combo. I don't know if the lens will improve my snaps, but when opportunity and inspiration strike I will be more likely to have my camera with me. *UncaMikey

The claim was accurate, the Maxxum 5 predates the *ist by several years, and until the *ist, it was smallest. The big puzzle, to me, is why does Pentax say the DA 40mm does not work on 35mm? Mounted on a 35mm body, the small size and nice focal length makes a wonderful carry around combo. I've heard that some examples vignette on FF. I'd expect Pentax simply wasn't ready to guarantee it, so they called it a DA. The focal length makes more sense on FF anyways, IMHO. I'm a 40mm fan myself. I don't know if the lens will improve my snaps, but when opportunity and inspiration strike I will be more likely to have my camera with me. *UncaMikey -Adam
Re: Enabled: world's smallest 35mm SLR
Cute camera and lens. 40mm on 24x36 film has always been one of my favorites. 40mm proves a little less desirable for me on the DSLR bodies; 28mm gives about the same field of view. I find myself using 28mm and 35mm a lot with the FA20-35, perhaps I should invest in an FA28/2.8 AL. The nice thing with this focal length (40 on 135 and 28 on the DSLR) is that you can do zone focusing very nicely: set to f/11, now at 6m (18') you get scenic range, set to 2m (6') and you get close up range. (You get about one stop more speed with the DSLR since you can use f/8 instead of f/11 for the equivalent DoF ranges.) Godfrey

Cute little body, but the lack of compatibility with non-A lenses kills it for me. --- Unca Mikey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I thought I would come out of lurk mode long enough to show off my new toy, what I believe to be the world's smallest full-frame 35mm SLR. http://www.flickr.com/photos/uncamikey/101750740/ I have had the *ist about two years now, and love it.
