Re: Heading for Ireland & the UK
Thanks for that great advice, Bob. I only wish we could have organised more time in London. The hop-on/hop-off buses are a great idea - we plan to do something similar in Dublin. I was aware of the Oyster card (similar, I think, to Sydney's Opal card) so we'll be looking into that. I'll keep 8 June in mind although I expect to be totally buggered most evenings after being dragged around (willingly!) to all the galleries/museums by my wife :-) Cheers Brian > On 25 April 2019 at 05:03 Bob Pdml wrote: > > > Thanks. > > Another thing I forgot to mention is getting around, other than by boat or > open-top bus. Re: Heading for Ireland & the UK
I found London very friendly to navigate on foot, in the tube or by the Open-Top Tour Buses. The latter are quite nice, as then generally stop at the places a tourist wants to see. The Tube is not quite up to the Moscow Subway system or the Paris Metro, but quite user-friendly, once one gets accustomed to the strange pronunciation used for some of the stops, like Southwark. The museums and galleries are great. I especially like the British Museum and the British Library. The Tate Modern had nasty "art," but a 7th floor restaurant with excellent fish and chips and a view to die for. Thanks. Another thing I forgot to mention is getting around, other than by boat or open-top bus. On public transport you can't use cash. Re: Heading for Ireland & the UK
For a first-time visitor I would recommend all the usual top tourist sites, otherwise you may feel you haven't really seen London. I can strongly recommend the open-top bus tours which, on a nice day, give you a very good and enjoyable overview of central London and the main sights, and is a nice hop-on/hop-off way to travel between them. There is a small cluster of sights which are easy to walk between - Saint Paul's, over the Millennium Bridge to Tate Modern and the Globe, then a walk downstream to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. If you have time take a boat trip on the river in either direction. Downstream brings you to Greenwich, which is stunningly beautiful; upstream it's a good way to travel between Tate Modern and Tate Britain, and beyond that to Kew Gardens and Richmond, which are also superb. You probably won't have time to go to Hampton Court Palace, sadly. The best museums and galleries are generally also the best-known: the Tates, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, Natural History Museum. But they are also the busiest. If you like theatre try and go to the Globe, but get a seat rather than stand in the yard, and if you get a seat, take cushions as they are authentically hard wooden benches. The restaurant at the Globe is quite good, and there are numerous others in the area, mostly mid-range chains. If you get some free time on the evening of Wednesday 8th let me know and we can maybe catch up for a beer. Because of work and previous commitments that is the only spare time I have during your trip. Enjoy your trip! I would pass up the Lake District for Northumbria in a heartbeat; it has 1/10th the mountain scenery but 1/100th the tourists. If you must, I recommend the A68/A69/M6 route to Kendal. It's two sides of a triangle but the scenery is much better. There is a route directly south from Llandudno to Cardiff, through Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, but be repared for it to take you closer to six hours driving than whatever Google tells you. The northern part will be infested with grockles and the rest will have farm machinery moving on it. WOW, that is a great agenda. It should be a really great experience. Re: Heading for Ireland & the UK
Ireland is a glorious country to visit. I highly recommend that you avoid the over-hyped monuments to Norman English rule, such as St Patricks Cathedral, Powerscourt, and Dublin Castle, and overcrowded tourist traps like the Guinness plant, Blarney Castle and the Ring of Kerry. The Irish experience is best felt in places like Kilmainham Gaol, a moving remembrance of English oppression with exhibits relating to the Irish fight for independence and the Great Hunger. Cobh has a memorable emigration museum, and exhibits on the Titanic, the Lusitania and the famine. The Hill of Tara and the Rock of Cashel are important to Irish History, as is the Book of Kells at Trinity College. The passage tombs at Newgrange are more impressive than Stonehenge, while the Cliff of Moher and the Causeway Coast are as scenic as anything in Europe. The music and craic in country pubs are also essential to experiencing the island. Four nights there, then car hire and heading to south west coast, up the west coast via Galway to Donegal, back to Dublin. Flying into Inverness from Dublin on 17 May for a few nights, then up to the Orkneys, back down to Edinburgh. Another car hire on 28 May, travelling to the south coast via Wales ending up in Salisbury on 5 June. Then train to London, arriving (Waterloo) on 7 June. As I said, we only have a short time in London so suggestions on places not to be missed would be gratefully accepted. Do you have a more detailed itinerary - so we can tell you where you've gone wrong? > On 20 April 2019 at 00:36 Brian W wrote: > > > G'day all > > My wife and I will be travelling around Ireland & the UK during May/June, > starting in Dublin and ending in London where we'll be from 7 June (leaving on > 10 June).
