Yes, thanks Scott.

A high quality gallery - I particularly liked Reinhard's 'Waiting - Going',
Ann's 'Before the Flood' and 'Estee' by Boris.

But I would have been happy if any had been mine (who didn't submit this time
because I didn't know how to interpret the theme).

Thanks for your comment, Boris.

This was a very pleasant park with a lot of activity, and I tried to
catch the spirit of the place by focusing on one of the groups -- the
chess players and those watching the game --and yet including a
glimpse of the variety there -- the skate boarders, the carousel, the
walkers and the lake.

Meta-notes (nothing about the images):

In the section of links below the images, it's hard to know
just where to click. On most of the lines the only hot spot
is the word "here", but on "See here for Submission information"
the word "here" isn't a link - only "Submission information".
Consistency would be good. Some visual indication of just
what words are actually links would be even better.

Finally, "The people who make the PUG a reality can be found here"
is rather out-of-date - it contains links to Adelheid's email.

OK, a small gallery but well done!

Ken's 'North Face of Denali' jumps out as my favourite. That massive
contrast is simply stunning.

A few others that especially caught my eye:

Bruce's 'Leading Lady'

Jorge's 'Pont du gard'

Bong's 'Take a Bow'

and just for fun - Matthew's 'The long, lonely walk of the defeated
weiner'. It brings a smile every time I look at it.

Brian - Stellar job!
I like this way of navigating - the thumbnails are big enough for me to
see them and it is easy to get around.

Lots of nice stuff -

but I'll be a PITA and pick a few faves

Bong's "Bert's Chin" - ( funny that he commented on last call that he
forgot what he uploaded :-) )

I just love it...
also...
Subash's "The Fern Look"
Brian's " Indecisive" gave me a chuckle and is certainly right on
topic (looks like my handwriting :-( )

Robert Woener' s snowy Max Patch scene..
Stan's Pebble's - fascinating because of the randomness of them - and
beautiful light

John Sessom's "Grandfather in the mountain"

But that's just a quick little group that made me go "h."

Yes it is and, after looking at most of these for a couple of weeks,
these are the ones appeal most to me:

* Ken's 'Bad Mud' and Dan's 'Giant's Stepping Stones' - totally
different subjects but very similar in concept.

* Subash's 'The Fern Look' - an extremely unusual perspective.

* John's 'Mushrooms on the March' - wonderful colour with subtle shadows
- and an innovative title!

* Ted's 'Steel Creek Reflections' - beautiful colours and a 'painterly'
look.

* Paul's 'Autumn Memory' - very subtle tones. I suspect that most of us
would never have noticed the photo opportunity here.

* Ann's 'Written in Stone' - wonderfully abstract.

* Rob's 'Dipping of the Fronds' - one of those images where the more you
look, the more there is to see.

* Bong's 'Bert's Chin' - wonderfully complex patterns and colour.

Cheers

Brian

Great gallery! I'm with most people; so many great shots--hard to pick
favorites. Skill, technique very high in this 1st PUG for 2011. And I
notice some new names! Excellent! Thanks so much for your work, Brian, and
looking forward to the next gallery! Cheers, Christine

Jeez, I enjoy the PUG! Thanks Brian, and everyone who submitted.

My favorites this month are Annsan's (texture, composition, some
irony), Marco's (great composition and rendering, and a pun!) and
Malcolm's (I'm always a sucker for interesting geometry).

Very nice gallery this time.

I actually had a few photos that would have fit the theme, but they were

Think I've seen Ann's Broome before. Very nice.

Ken's is, of course, beautiful. And Jorge's Giant Shadow is very
interesting, partly because it's an unusual and interesting statute. You
have to look twice to realize the man kneeling in front is another statue.

The one I got the biggest kick out of was Touch Down by Brian. It hasn't
landed yet, and the shadow looks like a toy plane.

I also think that Ken's photo is gorgeous. And, in my mind, it also
goes into "reflections" and "silhouettes" categories.

(While one can find shadows upon careful look, the focus is on the two
features I mentioned.)

When I was looking at the gallery for the first time, yesterday, - by the
time I looked at Don's photo, I had a filling that I just had seen
something from that spot. Then I realized that it was because of Alan's
photo.

Cheers,

Igor

I also think that Ken's photo is gorgeous. And, in my mind, it also goes
into "reflections" and "silhouettes" categories.

(While one can find shadows upon careful look, the focus is on the two
features I mentioned.)

When I was looking at the gallery for the first time, yesterday, - by the
time I looked at Don's photo, I had a filling that I just had seen
something from that spot. Then I realized that it was because of Alan's
photo.

The January PUG is disappointingly small. but it includes some very fine
images indeed.

My favorite is Fishin with the Guys by Ken Waller. I was at that very
spot, at Brooks Falls, about 25 years ago. Like Ken, I was hoping for that
classic shot of a salmon jumping into the mouth of a brown bear; like him,
I was disappointed. In any event, this photo is a very pleasing and
evocative rendition of an unforgettable place and event.

My second favorite is Which Is My Cap? by Henk Terhell. The repeating
pattern is hypnotic, and the result is quite effective in every respect.

Already broke my New Years resolution. I was going to submit one, but I just
couldn't "gather" the resources in time. Guess it's time to start working on
February if I can remember what the theme is supposed to be.

I will note the the autosubmit page is still showing the themes for 2018.

I understand that Katmai is visited alot more now then when you were there.
I've heard there are now comercial outfits bringing in tourists for the day,

We’ll be going back North in 2020, it is too early to book but I have been
looking at a 2-3 night lodge stay at Brooks Falls…
Even though the prime spots at the upper falls will likely be crowded, I may
get a little time there early or late in the day, plus along the river further
down. We’ll see. Meanwhile I have your shot fine Ken and others of that genre
to study and get my anticipation up!

Re: January PUG is up

2019-01-09 Thread Ken Waller

Stan

Thanks for the comment.

Crowds will depend on the time of the year and if the salmon are running.
Even given some crowds, you should be able to figure out when the
observation deck is not crowded - just be flexible with your timing. Last
time I was there, the rangers were limiting the number of people on the
deck. If the salmon are running, down river will most likely be void of
bears.

That is a very fine gallery indeed!

I agree; Matthew Hunt's "Destin Thunderstorm" is electrifying and
dramatic. The Pick of the litter.

I also love the quiet minimalism of "Foggy Morning" by Paul Stenquist and
the frigid atmosphere of AnnSan's "City Snow."

All good! Thanks again for your efforts Brian. I also like the mood in
Patrick’s image. And I quite like the lines in Subash’s monsoon shot, the beach
in the foreground works well.
Ann’s snowfall shot puts me right into a situation I have been many times; I
am so happy to have retired and so can just hibernate when faced with such
conditions! Great image, not so great memories.

That's a great gallery this month - so well done - great shots everyone.
Particularly liked Peter Alling's 'Ice Storm', Matthew Hunt's 'Destin
Thunderstorm', Patrick Nelson's 'Stormy Clarens', and Rick Womer's Squall Line'
- but again, all the rest of such great quality as well.

Inspirational each and every one!

Verruh nas! A few of my favorites:

Matt's Destin Thunderstom is quite dramatic. Very nicely done.
Patrick's Stormy Clarens. This seems to impart feelings of strife and
melancholy.
Brian's Storm Approaching. I really like the composition and the
contrast in the sky. I only wish the foreground was a bit more
illuminated.
Rick's Squall Line. This may be my favorite-est. My only possible
complaint is the swimming platform should have been closer. But I
understand why Rick didn't want to wade out there right at that
moment...

My favourites, in no particular order: P.J.'s Ice Storm, Daniel's Spring

All the rest are great as well, of course.

Most of the other shots in the gallery were of storms that were very
appealing.. as opposed to being "glad I missed that storm" provoking.
PJ and Dan made me wish I were  where they took theirs at that moment.
But Patrick made me wish his shot was mine more than others.

Beautiful but ominous at the same time.

QUestion for Matt about the lightening shot.. was that a combo of two
exposures IN CAMERA? were you shooting rapid fire with the camera
on a tripod in the same spot?  The Weather Channel folk tell us that
there are more lighting strikes in Florida than any other location in
the USA..
at least I think that is what i remember them saying.  Hope you were
inside a building and shooting through a window

anyway - This was a really lovely gallery altogether.

Not in camera. The camera was on a tripod shooting continuously for
the duration of the storm (resulting in hundreds of exposures), and I
cherry-picked the two best frames and merged them in Photoshop. The
camera was on the covered balcony of our vacation condo (10th floor)

Re: January PUG is up

2020-01-10 Thread Paul Sorenson

Ralf -

As Ann said - be careful what you wish for.  Below is our weekend
forecast...

...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM
CST SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Through Saturday
morning, 2 to 5 inches of snow and up to a quarter inch of
freezing rain is expected. Freezing rain totals will be highest
southeast of a line from Janesville to Milwaukee.

Additional moderate to heavy snow is expected Saturday
afternoon and evening. Storm total snow of 6 to 9 inches is
possible. Winds will gust as high as 40 mph, especially closer
  to Lake Michigan.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Two waves of wintry weather are expected.
The first will bring a combination of snow, freezing rain, and
sleet to the area this evening and tonight. Moderate to heavy
snow will then move into the area Saturday afternoon and night.
Between these two waves on Saturday morning, areas of freezing
  drizzle will be possible.

Having never really been cold or encountered much snow, it is hard for
me to appreciate the snow scenes which appear to be either devastating
or magical. However, I can appreciate an electrical thunderstorm like
the one so well captured by Matthew.

The forecast around here is for unseasonably warm weather bringing hurricane
force winds, torrential rain, flash floods & hail the size of baseballs

or else it's going to snow. They haven't made up their minds yet.

Most of the other shots in the gallery were of storms that were very
appealing.. as opposed to being "glad I missed that storm" provoking.
PJ and Dan made me wish I were  where they took theirs at that moment.  But
Patrick made me wish his shot was mine more than others.

Beautiful but ominous at the same time.

QUestion for Matt about the lightening shot.. was that a combo of two
exposures IN CAMERA? were you shooting rapid fire with the camera
on a tripod in the same spot?  The Weather Channel folk tell us that there are
more lighting strikes in Florida than any other location in the USA..
at least I think that is what i remember them saying.  Hope you were inside a
building and shooting through a window

anyway - This was a really lovely gallery altogether.

My favourites, in no particular order: P.J.'s Ice Storm, Daniel's Spring
Snow Storm, Paul's Fog (though there's usually either storm or fog), and
Annsan's City Snow, mainly because we haven't had any decent snow here
in almost a decade.

All the rest are great as well, of course.

I've stopped counting the number of Fridays with rain we've had in a

The car looks like a rolling mud heap but there's no point in having it
