Unfortunately, I was there on business, and although I had several
weeks, I worked every day that it didn't rain. On the day it rained I
drove west as far as the mountains. and I did get to drive down the
east coast on some location scouts. I spent a few days in Christ
Church, but most of the time in a farm town about 70 miles southwest of
Christ Church. We shot some commercials for Chrysler in fields of
flowers. They were seed crops, but very pretty. We paid double for one
farmer's crop, then built a 900 foot asphalt road through his field, We
tore it out and trucked in new topsoil for the field when we were
through. New Zealand is the most beautiful place on the planet, with
some of the best people one would ever want to know. Wish I could live
there.

What I like is the colors and the clouds. What bothers me a bit is
the DOF. The front leaves are in focus and the rest is not. There is
just too much of the rest of the photo to put the focus on the extreme
foreground, at least for me. I see the leaves top front to be more of
a framing tool rather than the subject.

Re: PAW - Sunset, 6:06PM

2004-09-23 Thread Shel Belinkoff
Not quite. I was observing a disconnect between a posted image and the
~description~ of events that were taking place, not the title. Had the
poster (Frantisek) not described the scene as volunteers helping the
handicapped at a fair, I'd not have commented as i did.

And, in my own defense LOL, this is an abstract, not meant to directly
depict reality in any way, although, if one were to check the
sunrise/sunset table it would be seen that the sun set at exactly the time
noted in the title, 6:06 PM. Anyway, the posted photo is just another of
my pretentious images, poking a little fun at myself and all the silly or
unimportant images we see every day. That some people enjoy it is a bonus.

Thanks for your comments.

 Hi, Shel

Definately a diffreent take on sunsets. I really like it for being an
abstract shot with graphic elements that contrasts ech other somewhat; the
near horizontal lines of light and shade, and the structure in the wall.

However, there's nothing in this pic that points to the setting actually
being a sunset. It might as well be illumination from a sodium street lamp,
or maybe even a tungsten light source. You must decide for yourself if this
is a weakness in this shot; I just brought it up since you were very
insistent on the lack of connection between motif and title in a recent PAW
from somebody else.

Personally I think titles in general is a good thing when it can be used
to direct the viewer's thought in the directions intended by the
photographer, and it works for me in this case.

 Well spotted, Shel.

Hi!

I have two suggestions:

1. To rename it to Evening in Paradise g

2. To crop a little off the top. IMHO, this way, the couple on the far
back would gain in position so to say. It would be more prominent. And
since the couple actually makes the shot, I think they deserve better
placement.

Unlike for Frank, this one really works for me.

Hi, Fred,

I like it. I'm trying really hard to love it, but so far, I can't quite go
that far.

Seems that everything is there - spectacular sky, those gentle curved waves
(very cool!), the couple walking on the beach, beautiful mountains in the
hazy distance.

But something just doesn't raise it that extra level for me, and I can't put
my finger on it (but I'll try anyway g).

Is it that tree in the foreground? Maybe it's a bit distracting to me.

The couple is definitely a nice touch, but are they in the wrong position?
I might like them a bit closer? Of course, I recognize that you didn't
really have much control of where they were, although maybe you could have
yelled, Hey, get back here and walk hand in hand again, I want another
take!! vbg

Again, I want to emphasize, I really like this a lot. It has amazing
potential. It just doesn't push me over the edge (as so many of yours do).

Now, I'll go see what the others have said (and likely look like an idiot in
the process g)

thanks, Fred,
frank
PS: of course, when you see a wonderful photo op, romance can wait. Good

Back in February 2000 my wife I had the great pleasure of visiting the
Hawaiian Islands. One of the islands we visited was Kauai. This shot
was taken one evening on the beach at the Radisson Kauai Beach Resort
outside of Lihue. A warm tropic breeze was blowing, the waves were
lapping the shore, and the setting sun was turning the sand golden. A
perfect time for a romantic stroll on the beach but I was too
busy taking photographs. Still I did manage to photograph another
couple enjoying a stroll vbg
Hope you like it.

I really like this a great deal, Boris. The top is dark for a fairly large
expanse -- I might trim off 1/8th of an inch. I don't think you really need ALL
that darkness. But maybe not, not sure. A quibble, really.

It's nice the way it goes from dark to light to dark. I always like that in
pictures. And I like the way you have just a little of the ground and a lot of
the sky.

And it wouldn't be nearly as nice, of course, without the people.

Very nice shot. Very.
