"The Mark"! Wouldn't have known about the "noise" had you not mentioned it. Not
something I generally look for, especially on a smaller image.
Really provocative moment. Good eye for both seeing and composing.

I'll gussy it up once I get my computer hard drive fixed. Things like
"paying the rent" and "buying food" have gotten in the way of that
recently, but I remain optimistic!

I'll have a lot to gussy up once I'm up and running again, but by then
I'll need practice with PS anyway...

RE: PESO: Watching

2008-07-08 Thread Anthony Farr
It does one good to see traditional B&W every now and again, to give some
benchmark tonalities against which to compare our digital efforts.

How was the image digitized? Is this a scan from the film, or from a print?
If a print, was it conventional enlargement or "Frontier" (or similar)
printing?

IMO the picture is too elongated, which kills its compositional dynamics. I
realize it's an uncropped frame, with all the altruistic baggage that
attaches, but to my eye the space from a little way below the intersection
of the awning with the left border is superfluous. Crop it there, and a
tiny bit at the top to compensate, and the composition will jump right off
the screen.

Nevertheless, I love it.

Anthony Farr

This was scanned from the negative with a Epson Perfection 3200 flatbed.

There is an old song called "Let a Smile be your UMBRELLA"

and i was punning on that with the botanical term that describes
the flower you photographed from the family _umbelliferae_
has to do with the way the flowers branch out at the top of a stem, I
believe

anyway, nice flower

Re: PESO: Watching TV

2011-11-27 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Frank.

The animal on the TV is a Siberian Husky. Bandit likes any animal
shows on TV, but especially telecasts of dog shows and wildlife epics
featuring wolves, especially if there are pups.

I was a bit tricky getting him watching the TV when the camera could
pick up what was on the TV. He usually watches from a chair or sofa,
both of which are too far from the set to get both in the same image.
At other times, the TV image was flickering or park dark and part
bright. This was the shot that got the best image of the TV with it
being clear that the dog was watching the show and why.

Hi Dan: I love it! You caught your dog just at the right moment--well,
actually, you caught both dogs just at the right moment. The only comment I
would make is that the cropping looks a bit tight to my eye especially on the
right--that is, the lines of the edge of the tv on the far right--that long
triangle of brown and the top of the tv. But this is a minor nit compared to
the overall subject, expression, and juxtaposition, which are great! Cheers,
Christine

Another sparrow, shot at a modest 1/80th second shutter speed and an ISO of
about 1500. That seems to be a fast enough shutter to yield sharp results if
the bird is perching. This is with the DA 1.4X converter and the D FA 150-450.
The stop is f8 and the focal length is 630 mm.

I always wonder what the bird’s field of vision is like. They must see more
than 180 degrees.

They must have good vision around here, as the cat population is so high. Great

IIRC, the field of view is nearly 180 degrees. The fovea (area of
greatest sharpness on the retina) is way off-center so that it is
still engaged when looking ahead. I also recall reading that raptors
have the equivalent of 20/4 vision, and it includes UV.

Thanks, John.
Also, I was a bit far away from the people in the foreground, so reall fill
flash probably wouldn't work.
I could, of course, lighten them up in PhotoShop, but:  1) nI'm lazy; 2}
that would change the mood of the scene; and 3} I'm lazy.

Thanks Jack. The grandson is riding on top of his Auntie. I shot the

before. It was taken with the *istD + DA16-45 @31mm.

Interesting photo.
The impact driver might work if the screw slots are solid. You might also try
shocking each screw with a very thing drift that won't damage the screw slot

When you get it apart, remove all the rubber bits and dissimilar metals
like brass/bronze jets. Fill a slow-cooker with neat antifreeze (the
kind for alloy engines) and cook the carb overnight. Not in the
kitchen. Rinse and enjoy. Modelmakers discovered this trick for
removing castor-oil deposits from engines.

Re: Peso: Watching My Carb

Yes, Debbie is my wife. I don't have a shot of her bike, which is now
partially disassembled, but here's a web pic:

http://www.suzuki-bikes.com/suzuki-savage/

It's a small bike, which is why she likes it.

A little thumper.

I've got 5 bikes in the garage. Four of them are single-cylinder bikes.

No suggestions about the photo, but for the screws on the carb, a
dremel tool can cut a slot for a flatblade screwdriver if you strip
the screw heads. Once you get them out, replace them with allen-head
stainless steel screws.

You can use a single strand from a piece of stranded copper wire to
clean out the clogged jets in the carburetor.

That's the ideas. Nothing is stripped so far. All the screws are
phillips head. One came out, and there was no sign of Loctitie. I'll
try some liquid wrench with the impact driver that should arrive
tomorrow. If all that fails, I blast.

Find some way to soak it overnight in liquid wrench before attacking it
with the impact driver.
