Thanks for posting some lovely shots of one of my favourite places. One of the highlights of our trip down the Cotswold Way last year was brought about because I was reading Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, which is about Thomas Cromwell. We turned a corner and there was a plaque stating Thomas Cromwell stood here and watched the dismantling of Hailes Abbey. One of those unexpected moments. I often wonder how we'd have been able to look after all of those lovely buildings in these times of austerity if Henry and his henchman Cromwell hadn't dismantled them. There were hundreds. Chris, It might have turned out similarly over time. Hundreds of un-maintainable abbeys would have fallen into ruin, and a few would have been preserved--a slower process to the same end. From: Bob W From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of knarftheria...@gmail.com Amazing shot. Just think of all the events that happened at that church: weddings, baptisms, funerals. It must feel quite special at that spot. I don't think any of those things would have happened - it was an abbey, full of monks. It would have been licentiousness, greed, usury, fornication, gluttony and probably idolatry, otherwise Henry VIII would not have dissolved it, surely. The monasteries and abbeys were a kind of corporate, multinational organisation owing their allegiance to Rome, populated by powerful and ambitious men at the top. They controlled enormous agricultural holdings and acted as a giant wealth magnetic, sucking money out of the poor, whom they exploited ruthlessly by lying to them about their souls, preventing them from getting an education and bamboozling them into believing that their position at the bottom of society was ordained by god and therefore unchangeable. Nuns were little more than the monks' sexual playthings, and other woman were beneath acknowledgement as human beings. B I thought Henery VIII went after the monasteries because the Pope wouldn't let him divorce whats-her-name? RE: PESO - Fountains Abbey Chancel
Oh. Didn't read the title. Problem with abbies is the were too successful. All that organization and slavish devotion made for prosperous islands in a time of want. Learned, prosperous islands, when it comes to that. Figures they would eventually attract the less-than-pious. I don't think the vow of poverty went all the way up to the Abbot... ;-) cheers, frank What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof. -- Christopher Hitchens --- Original Message --- From: Bob W p...@web-options.com Sent: October 17, 2012 10/17/12 To: 'Pentax-Discuss Mail List' pdml@pdml.net Subject: RE: PESO - Fountains Abbey Chancel From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of knarftheria...@gmail.com Amazing shot. Quoth Bob W: It would have been licentiousness, greed, usury, fornication, gluttony and probably idolatry, otherwise Henry VIII would not have dissolved it, surely. That's right. Henry wanted to keep the licentiousness, greed, usury, fornication, and gluttony to himself. He also wanted to make sure he was the object of any idolatry. RE: PESO - Fountains Abbey
From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Rick Womer A front view of Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, UK: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16519777size=lg The place is vast, and extremely impressive (that's a family with a stroller in the lower left corner). It was built in 1132-1147, and was a monastery until Henry VIII dissolved them in 1539. Besides the batterings of nature, various owners sold off or used the stone as building material to reduce the place to ruins. Very nice. My parents were very fond of Fountains Abbey and went there quite often - they lived nearby. They're there forever now. It's quite a comedy to carry a hidden urn into a place like that and to scatter ashes surreptitiously under the eagle eyes of the wardens. If anyone is thinking of doing such a thing, don't scatter any on the still waters of an ornamental pond. They don't sink, and the ducks and swans are more used to people scattering bread for them. There is a new visitors centre there which has a very impressive timeline in the floor. The thing that surprised me is how much older Fountains Abbey is than Macchu Pichu, which I always thought of as quite old, with an ancient civilisation etc. It puts into perspective how old and continuous our own civilisation is (notwithstanding Disraeli's remark to Daniel O'Connell). i like the random stone in the middle of the impossibly green lawn; what about fountains? http://iati.savethechildren.org.uk/files/ppa20110401.xml It's in a very wet part of England. The last time I was in that area it had been raining very heavily for several days and the sides of all the hills were springing with vast quantities of water.
