From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of knarftheria...@gmail.com Love it! Do they have wi-fi in their subways! we have free wi-fi on the tube at the moment, although I think they'll be charging after the pilot period. It's very useful during the summer to be able to moan to people about the lack of air conditioning on the tube. I've also learned, since having my no-cycling ankle problem which is now more or less done with, that we have interactive bus timetables. When I'm heading to my bus stop in the morning I can text its number and it will tell me when the next 10 or so buses are due. The most amazing thing is, it's very accurate. A real benefit. Ive also heard that the next iPhone will be able to drink coffee, so you can just leave in Starbucks drinking coffee and talking to your friends' iPhones while you go out and have a life. Re: PESO - Japanese girls go mobile
With the money allocated for anti-terrorism after 9/11/01, one of the things that was set up in the 'big' cities was a method of tracking where each coach was, as a method of identifying say, a stolen bus, or one hijacked, or blown up (loss of signal). Transportation dispatchers looked at this and thought, we can see where drivers are stopping for coffee, having a go in the back with a doll (better when cameras came along in the middle 2000s) allowing them evidence for punishment of drivers, or the passengers who flogged them, physically and mentally. (We have a secret button to call the cops, and they know exactly where we are! ) Come forward a few years and shifty engineers who knew about this developed the systems to which you refer. They were put in major transfer stations in 2005, when I left in 2007 they were replacing bus and train stop kiosks with first CRTs behind unbreakable glass [when that was shown to not be true] by those red LED reader boards with voice that announce when the next XX bus will arrive, late of course, and to have your fare ready. It is a misdemeanor to avoid paying the fare. We drivers, of course, were told we could only remind a scofflaw once, then shut up and drive. Saved a few drivers a bloody nose, I'm sure. So there you have it Bob. Transportation history from the inside. Wiki probably has a say on it, maybe different. If you've been in government, you know to ask for the maximum allocation of funds, and provide some reason for getting it. Surplus to some other agency or trash it before the next fiscal allocation year comes around. It's been done. Didn't Godfrey have one in his Communicating Series of a couple sitting across from each other in a coffee shop with both of them texting? Re: PESO - Japanese girls go mobile
... I should've named it Japanese girls gone mobile[d]. John (Sessoms), - you are right, - people have done this type of photos. It is very likely that I even have seen Godfrey's photo. I was not trying to immitate anybody, - I just liked the overall setting. Actually, during this trip to Japan, I was taking some shots on the street that I might post later, if/when I get time to sort them out. So, in these, I was not trying to immitate Derby Chang or anybody else on the list. It was just something that was interesting and I had an opportunity for. (I don't have much time and opportunities for that in the US: living in Texas, I seldom use the public transportation, except for the airports, where sneaky photography may not be accepted well by the security personnel.) Also, in addition to my K7, I had a brand new smartphone that I was playing with, and in many cases it was easier to use for these types of photos. Re: PESO - Japanese girls go mobile
Frank, I don't remember. If they did, it would be a paid one. They do have Wi-Fi on the express (bullet) trains, - Shinkansen and such express trains as Narita express (Tokyo-NRT airport), but you need to have a paid subscription to one of the services. And, I believe there are two (or 3?) typical providers for those. Overall, it is very hard to find free Wi-fi anywhere in Japan. Even though many hotels seem to offer free internet included, it is usually a wired internet in the room. Paid internet from the major providers seems to be present in many points, but it is not what you can purchase right there on an hourly or daily base, - rather you need to have a subscription. I believe many people are using cell-based data connection (3G and most recently 4G). But if you are planning to visit Japan, it might be hard for you to buy a prepaid SIM card for that... For the locals, I heard you can find data plans that are relatively inexpensive, while phone calls are typically rather expensive. (I might be wrong, I didn't do a first-hand research while being there.) I've seen many people looking up city bus and train schedules on their cell phones. (In many cases, - those were not smartphones, - just regular flip-phones with the web-access). What is great is that unless you have irregular events like an earthquake, typhoon or tsunami, trains (including subway) and buses come right on time. This is to the extent that even my German colleague who regularly spends time in Japan that trains are organized in Japan much better than those in Germany (and with a very reasonable evidence). I was lucky to actually experience a disruption of train service caused by the recent typhoon. Cell-phone access to the interactive schedule website like http://www.hyperdia.com/en/ was very helpful to quickly find the alternative train/connection. Sorry, I wrote more than what you asked for... I loved that trip, and I am still somewhat under impression from it. Cheers, Igor Thu Oct 18 19:30:06 EDT 2012 knarftheriault wrote: Love it! Re: PESO - Japanese girls go mobile
You are looking at the beginning of the end of actual eye-to-eye contact by humans. Probably texting to each other. Next generation of phones will show you the phone number of the cell phones near you, or by just tapping them together, IIRC.
