My experience is that sometimes you really do want the direct light to get maximum detail (particularly some of the subtle textures that show micro-shadows). In Dan's photo, notice the way the fuzz stands out on the back petal. Always trading off different effects... Mostly I've been cheating (and in a hurry) when I want to block direct light and just moving my body to put the object in shadow. I did yesterday use a portable reflector for the first time to block out the background, made a huge difference. I like it, Dan, but the light is a bit harsh, and parts of the flower (especially in the center) look blown out. Did you shoot in RAW so that you can recover some highlights? Thanks, Rick. Yes, it is a bit harsh. The flowers that are accessible tend to be those in the brightest light. I just processed this quickly, and, as you suggest, I need to process it a bit. Thanks. I was on my tip toes on a chair to get to this, which was one of the lower blossoms. There are many other occasions when I should do what you describe, but generally I am a bit too lazy. Re: PESO - Pink Dogwood
Very pretty pink, and the flowers are in nice shape. I tried to photograph a flowering tree by the house the other day, and couldn't find a decent bloom--lots of foxing--to borrow a book term--brown edges and such. Had to give up. Very nice, Rick.
