I would be be surprised if they weren't investigating a full-frame sensor design. Re: full frame rumours and innuendo
Like the Canon and Nikon offerings, Pentax advanced amateur cameras will always outsell any FF camera by a wide margin. They're obviously not going to abandon APS-C at any point in the near or even somewhat distant future. So lens values will remain at least reasonably constant. As for me, I'll have paid for my DA lenses in work long before a FF camera is available. And like Nikon FF cameras, I'm sure a Pentax offering will have a DA frame size option. short term maybe, but when FF permiates, the aps lenses are simply not going to be very desireable when you have got a nice FF camera in you hand. Secondly, the other half of my statement was that the secondary market for FF lenses ( assuming good ones like smc K,M,A,F,FA etc will soar in value, especially the ones with features you cant buy anymore like the K,M,A ( precision manual focus ). jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Adam Maas Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2008 11:29 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: full frame rumours and innuendo And the experience in the Nikon world is that the high-end DX lenses hold their value even after FF arrives. -Adam On Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 9:52 AM, Paul Stenquist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Like the Canon and Nikon offerings, Pentax advanced amateur cameras will always outsell any FF camera by a wide margin. Re: full frame rumours and innuendo
Argument 1 is incorrect. The economics of cropped sensors will see them continue on the low end, and there will be higher-end bodies as cropped sensors have large advantages for certain types of work (Many wildlife shooters prefer them for the greater pixel density). So a market for good cropped glass will remain. I certainly agree that the market for FF lenses will rise in value, which is a real issue for pentax shooters as the really desirable glass is already rare and expensive. This may well drive people to other brands (It was a major factor in my switching back to Nikon). -Adam On Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 11:38 AM, J. C. What's more, the newest autofocus lenses offer excellent manual focus. The focus ring on the DA* 16-45 is a delight in its smoothness and size. And its throw is more than adequate, although not the equal of manual only lenses. RE: full frame rumours and innuendo
I would like to add that I would bet heavy that if Pentax introduces a full frame DSLR, that they will also introduce a full line of new digital FF lenses to go with it but I would also bet heavy that none of them will be manual focus lenses, hence the value of the good manual focus lenses will go up because there will be a new killer FF camera to use them on jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of J. Pentax representatives have been hinting that a Full Frame ~24mm x ~36mm sensor DSLR would someday be in the offing. If they buy Canon, Sony, (Konica/Minolta), or Nikon and wish to retain TTL metering manual focus lenses are not generally an issue. Since Canon and Nikon between them have about 90% of the DSLR market between, just statistically it's unlikely to be seen as a viable option. It's self fulfilling. All Canon and Sony bodies will TTL meter with MF lenses mounted via adaptors. Nikon's higher-end bodies (D200 and up) do as well. Re: full frame rumours and innuendo
You suddenly remind me of why I unsubbed a year ago. If someone did switch to Pentax, what would your statement make them? In my personal opinion your quality judgements are very simplistic. There are lots of reason for choosing Pentax over Canon, like street photography with compact cameras with good wide angle primes. Canon can ´t beat Pentax in that arena. Try finding something like a K10D with DA21, or anything like a cheap 50mm 1.4 (regardless of FOV) with image stabilization. I know a few well informed photographers who have switched for those reasons. In my humble opinion Canon is lost in oldfashioned technology. Nikon is passing them in the sales numbers. Frankly, I think the the market is going to skew towards Sony and Samsung. My classes used to be full of people with Canon Rebels and a smattering of Nikons. The last few classes have had about the same number of Nikons, but the Sonys are rapidly displacing the Rebels. Yesterday, I had the first occurance of a class without a single Rebel. All Sony and Nikon. The young folks in my classes are way more familiar with the Sony brand than any of the camera brands we grew up with. I'm guessing not too many years from now we'll be watching a duel between Sony and Samsung. Keep in mind, I'm talking about the consumer market, not the pros. Re: full frame rumours and innuendo
Sony's got the best deal going right now with the A200. Nikon's D40 is the value leader. The Rebels are either under-spec'd or overpriced (or both in the case of the XTi). I'm not shocked to see Sony and Nikon dominating right now. Samsung has not made a significant play for market share. They're playing Panasonic's game, looking for a strong niche. -Adam On Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 5:17 PM, George Sinos [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Frankly, I think the the market is going to skew towards Sony and Samsung. In my opinion, Sony, Nikon and Pentax are the three go-to brands right now, short of the full-on pro bodies. Sony for bang/buck (A200) or best ergonomics( A700), Nikon for cheapest (D40), best sub-$1K (D80) and highest performance (D300), Pentax for best compact kit and best foul weather kit (K20D with DA Limiteds or DA*'s respectively). -Adam On Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 5:17 PM, DagT [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You suddenly remind me of why I unsubbed a year ago. Re: full frame rumours and innuendo
Yep. And it's added exactly zero functionality. Nikon has the most capable lensmount, as the current revision of the F mount has all of the capabilities of EF mount (As of the D3/D300 introduction which added support for electronically activated apertures) as well as nearly-full backwards compatibility. Note Canon lenses cannot be used reversed with aperture control (Nikon F and Pentax K support this). Advanced and capable aren't necessarily the same thing. -Adam On Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 6:15 PM, J. Re: full frame rumours and innuendo
Canon has no wides which can compete with either the A or FA 20/2.8's or the DA 21 Limited, no good 28mm design (both the 28/2.8 and 28/1.8 USM's are mediocre to bad), their 50's other than the extremely expensive 50 f1.2L are average at best (and the Canon 50mm f1.4 USM is both nearly twice the cost as the FA 50mm f1.4 and twice the size) and Canon offers no decent quality consumer normal zoom for digital (Pentax offers the excellent 16-45, Canon's 17-85 IS's only real advantage over the kit 18-55 is range and IS, their new IS 18-55 kit lens is optically better). Canon offers some superb lenses, but they're very weak on wides in particular. Pentax offers far less lenses, but also offers effectively no poor performers. Even Pentax's two kit lenses are notably better than average. Outside of the L series, Canon only offers a few good lenses. -Adam On Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 6:14 PM, J. C. canons got a bigger @[EMAIL PROTECTED] Read that as THROAT. David Savage [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: People new to the brand aren't interested in manual focus lenses no matter how good they are. There are exceptions. I'm not entirely new, but haven't owned a Pentax since my ME was stolen years ago. My main reason for preferring Pentax over other brands is the range of good used lenses available. Nobody else is even close; 4/3 can take more lenses using adapters but does not give stop-down metering. An M8 or RD-1 takes lots of lenses, but are not priced well. I'm an amateur on a budget. Being able to pick up lenses I'd like to have but will not use often, for me anything longer than 100 or any fisheye, is a great attraction to a system. -- Sandy Harris, Nanjing, China -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
