Sorry to hear, Larry, hopefully it'll open some new doors for you.

My previous workplace recently had another round of outsourcing. It
appears that the corporate overlords decided that engineers are
cheaper in China, just like the manufacturing staff were. From a
financial point of view I don't see why they can't take this to its
logical conclusion and shift everything over, including their own jobs.

Some of my former colleagues are having to train their own
replacements. I really don't envy them.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: today's news

2009-08-07 Thread John Sessoms
Ain't no big thang! I've been fired from a whole lot better jobs than
that one, so I'm doing reasonably well. This ain't no more than a speed
bump in life's highway.

I'm a little down from losing my job, but at the same time, I was
growing to hate where I was working. I loved the job itself, but the
work environment and the co-workers were not good.

They have to pay me my accrued vacation in addition to the pay I'm due.
At least they waited until the end of the payroll week, so I'll have
almost a full paycheck for this period. That will basically carry me
through the month of August and September is when I start drawing
retired pay from the Army National Guard.

Sad to say, but my retired pay from my part-time job will be more than
my full time pay from Target was.

I had intended to stay on a while after my pension kicked in and pay off
my car payment early, but I won't have to make much of a financial
adjustment to continue to live within my means.

All it really means is I won't have a financial surplus I thought was
going to allow me to indulge myself a little. In the meantime, I've got
a lot of work I can do around the house.

Don't got no honey right now, but I sure got the honey-do.

firm believer in staying positive and looking for the new bend in the road

Bummer to hear Larry.

I was given the bronze handshake back in 2007.

It all works out in the end i have found.

Keep your head up.

Aw man, that sucks! If you want to organise a self-pity club, let me
know--I'll be unemployed on October 1st. Coincidentally, also a
Thursday.

Stiff upper lip, chin up, all that good stuff, and I'm sure you'll be

Sorry to hear that news, Larry, but I'll second the suggestion to go
freelance. It can be hit or miss at times, but at least you're in
control of your own destiny.

Exactly. Even if things run a little slower at times, I'd rather depend
on a bunch of customers than on one single boss. It's a kind of
risk-spreading that's worked for me over the last 28 years and I'd
really recommend it.

Sorry to read that!

1) happens, so don't give up anything.

2) worst things can happen, I'd rather be unemployed and healthy to
employed and counting days or weeks.

3) since you no longer have to worry about losing the old, familiar job,
take a hard look at other opportunities. You may end up in a better
situation faster than you expect.

Friend, I'm not saying it's easy. Nor simple. But I really believe
you're getting over it, soon.

Re: today's news

2009-08-06 Thread Larry Colen
Thanks for the cheerleading folks.

I don't have the last gig (2.5 years) on it, but if you look at my
resume you'll see that I'll alternate freelance with permanent
gigs.

The good news is that I can do just about anything.
The bad news is that when you're contracting, they want someone who is
really good at one particular thing.

Being able to do anything may be what bit me in the ass. For a
programmer, I'm a damned good writer, so my manager pretty much had me
take over all of the writing duties for the whole team.

I'd help other programmers with their design documents.
I'd convert requirements and design documents into entries in the
user's guide.
I wrote (and sometimes gave) tech transfer presentations (where we
teach the support folks about the new releases) for pretty much the
whole team.
My manager said something that led me to believe that he thinks that
since I wasn't doing any programming, that may be part of why upper
management laid me off.

I had pretty much just finished the documentation for the upcoming
release, so the company has a while before they come up against the
detail that our tech writer, isn't very technical, and is more of an
editor than a writer.

Maybe they'll hire me back as a contractor.

Several times in my life, being laid off/fired has turned out to be a
good thing for me. My last permanent gig was at a startup that got
borgged by Symantec. Symantec and I were not a good fit. They ended up
firing me in Dec 2003.

On Jan 1, 2005, a year later, I ran into an old coworker at a
party. He looked at me and commented how much happier and relaxed I
seemed than the last time he had seen me.

On Jan 2, I was running a memorial service for my father who had died on
Dec 29th, and I still looked happier and more relaxed than I had
working at Symantec.
