Contact cleaner is not a good idea. Many of them include a lubricant. Doing this job without disassembly is also not a good idea. Well hell, if I sent it in for repair it was going to cost at least $200. Might as well try the simple fix first. At worst I'd have to wait a couple of weeks to find out it was unrepairable than look into used Ds/Ds2, (at maybe a cost of $300 if was lucky), or saving my pennies for a K10D while I used my *ist D, (and maybe used up some of that BW 35mm film I've got in an LX).. Find a real electronics or industrial supply store, and ask them for residue-free contact cleaner. It is very important that it be residue-free. Use it sparingly, spraying and rotating the knob, until you no longer get the jittery response. Well, if it were under warranty it would be a no brainer. I've had the poor thing for almost two years now and I have it on manual a lot so it gets quite a work out. Color used to be lubricated IIRC. I'm not sure that's called for here. They used to sell something we called tuner cleaner, (which wasn't it's actual name, but wasn't the color contact cleaner), I used to clean up the brushed aluminum front panels on stereo components really nicely. It's funny but I never thought of cleaning actual contacts with it. Well now they have contact cleaner and tuner cleaner, (the tuner cleaner has lube the contact doesn't), I didn't recognize the primary chemical agent in the contact cleaner, didn't think to write it down, and I'm trying to find it's formula on line to see what it might do the plastic.
