Seems to me when Photoshop is allowed it's Katie bar the doors unless very

Re: Amazing astro photos

2016-07-28 Thread John

Didn't say it WAS done that way, only that it COULD be done that way.

With "today's super-low-noise sensors" you could use a low flash power
and mask off portions of the Fresnel lens to make the circle of light
illuminating the bird small enough to not light the trees.

I shoot the scene first without the flash & bracket the hell out of it.

Then try it again with the Better Beamer. I'd try to mask it so it just
barely illuminated the bird's body.

That way, if the flash spooked the bird, I'd still have the first round
available to work with.

Not without illuminating at least part of the tree. I mean, the Better
Beamer narrows down the field illuminated by the flash a lot, but it
can't be *that* specific!

If you look carefully at the bird's back you'll notice a dark
"anti-halo" inside the outline of the body. This appears to me to be
the edge of the selection he made before brightening the bird in
Photoshop. With today's super-low-noise sensors you could find enough
information in the shadows to pull out the level of detail seen in
this shot. The noisiness/blotchiness of the bird's body is what lead
me to the conclusion that's how it was done.

Re: Amazing astro photos

2016-07-28 Thread Jostein
If this was a flash job you'd probably spot it by glints of certain
portions of the branch underneath the bird.

But I don't agree with Paul either. I think this is done by selective
dodging. The main reason I think so is that the contrast in the plumage
looks unnaturally harsh, as it would be if pulled up, like, two or three
stops.

There are many stunning images, but the PHOTOGRAPHIC quality displayed

I wouldn't want to be one of the judges trying to choose winners &

Now *that's* what we call a "very good point"!

From the superficial examination one can perform on a web-resolution

image, I think the bird has been subject to some dramatic dodging in
Photoshop. I don't *think* it's a composite shot, but I'd have to have
access to a full-res shot to be certain. Obviously, the judges do, and

A Fork, a Spoon and a Moon "sits atop of a branch" should be "sits atop a

There are a few other, more nitpicky ones...

I don't think it could be accomplished through dodging alone. You wouldn't have
much color to recapture and you'd create a lot of noise. Perhaps a "replace
color" in combination with some detail creation. But my money still says it's a
composite.

Also note that the Perseid meteor shower shot is acknowledged to be a
composite of multiple exposures (doesn't say how many).

By the way, the error I alluded to in the beginning was in the
Antarctic aurora shot. They called it the "Aurora Borealis" when it is
actually the "Aurora Australis".

Obviously, the judges do, and
may even have access to the raw file. Perhaps this kind of Photoshop
is allowed? I haven't read the contest rules but I know from going to
the exhibit in the past and reading the technical descriptions of the
photos some kinds of post-capture processing are allowed.

photoshop would need to be allowed to get the Pleidies (sp?) shot.

I have seen -- and photographed -- the shadow of Mauna Kea (from Haleakala,
rather than from Hualalai), but this image is really much more effectuve
than mine.
