Re: Chicago Photowalk--2 options

2010-01-05 Thread Bob Sullivan
For all you distant travelers thinking about coming to Chicago in May...
Chicago is a big city of 4+ million with all the associated +/- stuff.
It's a marvelous city set on the shores of a giant fresh water lake.
But, it's in the middle of the USA - 2 hours flight time to New York City or
Washington DC - 3.5 hours to Calfornia and the west coast. There's no
dropping into Los Angeles for the day from here.

Chicago grew from a small village in the 1850's because of it's central
location and the growth of railroad transportation and farming. Chicago
sits at the eastern edge of the Great Plaines - now states like Iowa,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois - some
1,000 miles planted in corn, wheat, soybeans, etc. and originally
treeless prairie.

Milwaukee is the nearest city (1.5 million souls) a 1.5 hour car ride north.
St. Louis is similar in size but 6 hours southwest and on the Mississippi River.
Until the railroads, transportation was North/South along the Mississippi.
Public transit between cities is mainly via cars. The public rail transit to
other cities is nowhere near European expectations. We fly or drive.

I tell you this because you might like to see some of the midwest outside of
the metropolitan area. I would consider renting a car and driving down to
St. Louis, or Davenport Iowa (just across the Mississippi), or Milwaukee.
It's simple to travel on the interstate highway system and stay at a Motel
(motor hotel).

I have to think more about activities I would recommend in Chicago.

I do have a 4 bedroom house and all my kids have moved out, but it's a
long way from a McMansion. Depending on how many are attending, I'm

they've

discovered where one is. This option's a bit of a walk, but very doable.
Our Mountain Goat will probably complain about it's ease, but the rest of
us

will feel well walked by end of day!

Photowalk Option # 2

We all meet at the Old Town Ale House on North ave (
http://www.oldtownalehouse.net/ there's music at this site. don't yell at
me). We all start with a quickie: a shot, a beer, and a pretzel, then head
east on North ave, ending up at North ave Beach. We tramp & clown around,
see the North Ave boat house, maybe walk to Oak street beach, walk back,
take pictures of each other. If the volleyball players are out, you can
gaze at nearly naked dudes and dudettes. We then head west on North Ave,
maybe stop at the Chicago Historical Society (
http://www.chicagohs.org/ ),
but continue on with purpose to North & Wells, the heart of Old Town,
(which

isn't the Old Town I grew up with, but it's still fun), where we tramp &
clown, & take pictures, & drink, & eat, & shop more if you like.

I'll be posting more photo options, but there's time for that. If you want
me to try and work in something you want to see in a photowalk option,
just

let me know. I'll give it a shot.

Cheers, Christine

P.S. I'd really like to do a PDML group shot on the beach somewhere. I'd
be bummed if we didn't do that--but if we couldn't make it happen, I'd
probably be able to get over the disappointment. Just FYI.

Christine,
Can we get some basic paramaters on this event?
What's the count on who's coming? Committed vs Intending and
International vs not?
What activities on what days? Is it a Thursday night pre-opening
party or is that Friday?
Will US folks do Friday-Sat-Sunday? International a bit longer on either end?
Can we get most folks at hotel 1 or hotel 2 (alternative price classes?).
I'm thinking that I have a 6 passener van and we could do some tours.
Is Jostein coming? Can he bring his slide show of the Antarctic?
(Why should the folks at Nordfjord photoclub have all the fun.)
