There's no way to do that, AFAIK. If your body supports SDM,
and the chip in the lens says this lens has SDM, then that's
how the body will attempt to focus the lens.

  HI Morris,
Make sure your manual/automatic switch isn't set wrong or in between the
marks. If that's not it, focus manually a few times and see if the HSM
  comes back.

Re: HSM -- Restart?

2010-11-26 Thread Miserere
There was a thread on PentaxForums where people were trying to do
that. Nobody was successful. Lots of people have been asking for a
firmware switch to allow the choice of screwdrive or SDM; I doubt it's
going to happen.

There's no way to do that, AFAIK.  If your body supports SDM,
and the chip in the lens says this lens has SDM, then that's
how the body will attempt to focus the lens.

the 16-50 has screw drive alright but when SDM dies it won't default
back to screw drive on a body that supports SDM.

pentax says they're aware that people are complaining but defect
ratios do not differ significantly from other product lines. assuming
that is true it doesn't make things better for those affected but
speaks volume about the i'net as a negative multiplier

It doesn't work. On the other hand, on the K10D you can roll back its
firmware to a previous version, then SDM focusing is disengaged and the
camera uses the built-in motor to drive the focusing. I have done it and
it works.
There are some caveats, though. Firstly, it only can be done with the
K10D. I downloaded a 1.1 firmware with a patched header which makes the
camera think it is 1.30 version, then it allows to install it on top of
the 1.30 version in the camera (that was the firmware which enabled SDM
focusing). Afterwards, I updated the firmware to version 1.20 because it
adds some valuable changes.
Be careful, if you have updated to version 1.31, you can't roll it back
using the patched firmware. One of these days I'm going to install
version 1.30 again to see if the solution the Pentax tech told you works
with my 50-135.

That alleged solution didn't work for my 50-135. It got stickier and
stickier over this past summer until it finally just froze solid. Even
the manual focus sleeve would randomly fail to engage and focus it.

That lens was within one month of the end of the 2-year warranty when I
drove it over to Pentax in Mississauga. They repaired it in 2 weeks and
returned it overnight courier. Now it has 6 more months warranty.
Hoping like hell it doesn't need it!!
