BTW, you can take a Missi bus from Islington subway station to Square One. There's about a 10 minute walk from there to the gallery. Despite being dismissed as urban-sprawlsville, Mississauga's transit system is pretty civilized. Amazingly they keep to their schedule too. > Have to admit that I'm a bit uneasy about art "competitions", especially > between different media as seems to be the case here. The whole juried competition is a negative to many people, but her take is "nothing ventured, nothing gained." She entered this one and did not get selected, but she's not taking it badly. She entered a competition in nearby Burlington the week after and got in, so she's happy there. I had nothing riding on getting into this: no expectations, wasn't holding my breath. I simply submitted my best work and left it at that. I wanted to see that shot printed anyway, so I had little money at stake either. It matches our dining room decor, so I know where it's likely going when the exhibition ends. :-) > --- Original Message --- > > From: Bruce Walker > Sent: January 17, 2013 1/17/13 > To: Pentax Discuss Mailing List > Subject: Re: I've been selected for a juried art show, VAM35 > > Well, the opening is over, and it was really well attended. Re: I've been selected for a juried art show, VAM35
You'd have to look very carefully to see anything intimate at this exhibit, Derby. Actually, I count about 10 items smaller than mine, with the smallest being 10x10 inches. Dimensional-peeping aside, the show as a whole looks good, with larger pieces given more breathing space and smaller pieces grouped nicely together. I have to give the jury and curator credit for creating a coherent exhibit from disparate material. I hope to attend the jurors walkthrough this Saturday to hear their thoughts directly. Thanks! Well yes, I'm watching for that, but not with 'bated breath. Still, it should look really good above a white leather couch in a neutral decor, or perhaps on an exposed brick wall. That's a great photo, Bruce. Any thoughts I entertained about going were dashed by that little early evening snow squall. Hope to get by to see it before the show ends. I'll have to wait until my wife's P&S is emptied to see if there are any stills to share. I took my K20D but didn't really bother with it. Seemed more of an enjoy-the-moment kind of evening to me. Met some friends, drank some wine, had a couple of veggie spring rolls. Wondered how on earth a few of the works ever got selected, but on the whole enjoyed the show. This was the first year (of 35) that photography was included with traditional fine art media, so I was proud to have been selected and to represent the photographic intruders. :-) I printed my shot at 30 by 20 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas, which I thought was plenty large enough, but it was dwarfed by the paintings, some of which were probably eight feet tall. I'd say the size of the average work in this show is 3x4 feet -- clearly Big Art is In. But interestingly the show's First Prize winner was a conceptual piece made up of a collage of photos. Not strictly Photography per se as it's documentation of the work which is really an installation, or a series of smaller installations. I didn't win anything, except for a warm buzz of participation -- or from the wine; unsure which. I've made my shot public again, so you can see it here: http://www.flickr.com/bruce_m_walker/8207621870/ On Fri, Jan 4, 2013 at 6:23 PM, Bruce Walker wrote: > The new year was only a couple of days old when I got some great news: > I've had an image selected for the Visual Arts Mississauga 35th Annual > Juried Show of Fine Arts. Thank you, Frank! It'd be really great if you could come, and gravy if you could get some shots too. :-) I just returned from a jaunt over to the AGM to deliver my print.
