You and Paul both make good points about the value of video within a DSLR. So, I will stipulate that video does have value to some. Do I care if it is included on my own camera? Not really, it doesn't bother me as long as its presence doesn't impede my use of the camera for still images (e.g., by making stills-related buttons smaller and harder to get to in order to have more room for video-related buttons.) I might mutter about sharing in the amortization of video functions which I don't need, but I can also imagine that the engineering to facilitate video has given me better Liveview, larger buffers with faster card-write speeds, etc. So, end of the day, I don't really care, but I remain baffled that all of the manufacturers obviously see value in including video capacity. I was, and still am, baffled by the popularity of "crossover" vehicles. My limitation of course; 80-90 years ago I might have been baffled by the proliferation of color films. Just change for the sake of change; mutter, mutter. . . In my ideal world, I would like to see video as an add-on option. If you want/need that function, pay $200-300 extra for the YT version of the body. But that ain't gonna happen since everybody is accustomed to seeing video as part of every camera's feature set. stan On Oct 28, 2013, at 3:16 PM, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: > There are good situations for when the larger sensor in a DSLR or > TTL-electronic camera, as well as the availability of the range of lenses > they can use, makes sense for video work. There are good situations for when the larger sensor in a DSLR or TTL-electronic camera, as well as the availability of the range of lenses they can use, makes sense for video work. At least at the price point I can afford in video cameras … Even professional movie makers choose DSLRs and TTL-electronic cameras for some purposes to save on equipment costs. There are other times when a DSLR or small TTL-electronic enable shots that could not be done with a pro video camera due to size, weight, etc. My sum-up of the LuLa article: "Just another old git who wants the good old days to come back." ;-) I have plenty of simple cameras that address the basics, from the stone axe of my plain prism Nikon F up to and including my Leica M9. And I have a couple of very complex cameras. One of the most complex is my latest - the Olympus E-M1. It also has the best controls of any camera I've owned, and I can configure them to work *exactly* the way I want the camera to work, from fully manual with instant access to ISO, exposure time, aperture, and focus, to fully automated. I have no complaints about what manufacturers make. I applaud the diversity of design and ideas their products represent. I choose what I want to work with from that, and make what I choose do what I want it to. If it's too much trouble, I sell whatever it was and buy something else that does it more easily. To me, that's the only sane way to do things. Manufacturers don't make a product for 100 people, or even 1000. They never have, not for anything that costs under $10K anyway. You pick from what they make to suit your needs best, and adapt. Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)
DSLRs make good video cameras for some applications. I wrote and directed a video for an automotive parts supplier and worked with a pro cameraman who regularly shoots Red Wings hockey, Michigan football and other major television productions. For the shoot in the part supplier's design studio, he used a Canon DSLR with a video screen attached. It was one of their high end APSC models. With relatively wide shots needed, it proved a good choice and a convenient way to do the job. At the auto show many of the pro video guys shoot with similar rigs: DSLRs with video screen attached. I shot the video for my Times Dream Cruise piece with my K-5 on the same day I shot the stills. Worked out well, since I was able to prefocus and use a wide lens for all the shots I needed. The only limitation was my limited experience as a videographer. I look forward to better video on the K-3. Paul On Oct 28, 2013, at 10:30 AM, Stan Halpin wrote: > Huh. Huh. I never had a reason to look at the K-5 etc pictures with their captions showing where each of the buttons are - I figured I knew all of that. So if the cameras have a sound capability, why haven't we seen functions that would allow a voice-recorded tag on images, or spoken warnings. Why can't I use the O-GPS1 unit to give me driving directions - it already has a navigation feature. And in case anyone thinks I am serious, look at the thread on divergence and simplicity. Thanks for the offer Dave. I was successfully able to download it yesterday, I suppose after the rush to get it was over. :-) My recollection is that sometimes these pre-release manuals do not look like the published ones that arrive with the camera. Yeah, I've done that a couple of times too. I would like to try one of those Wi-Fi enabled cards but they are not readily available in SA yet. Do any PDMLers have hands on experience? I see they managed to get the K3 manual into only 114 pages with better formatting. The K7 manual is 334 pages. Thanks Stan. I carry the manual with me all the time and have referred to it several times when some unusual camera operation suddenly occurs. Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)
Ken - I have started into the K-3 manual Darren posted. It looks exactly like the pdf versions of K10, K20, K5, & K5ii manuals that I have used before. Same layout, same level of detail on descriptions of e.g. menu functions, etc. And the "What is in the box?" page shows that the hardcopy manual is included. One thing that strikes me so far is how much more prominent the video-related functions are. And I had not realized that it has a built-in speaker! Verbal alerts? Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)
I may be wrong about this, but since [Focus Peaking] is set to [ON] in [Live View] of the [Camera 3] menu, it may be possible to save this (along with other preferences) to one of the three USER modes. The "Saving Frequently Used Settings" on page 75 says that [Camera 1-4] menu settings "(with exceptions)" can be saved to a USER mode. Hopefully [Focus Peaking] isn't one of those exceptions. You could then Edit the USER1/2/3 mode name to: FOCUS-PEAKING. The new manual uses a "2 vertical pages per horizontal sheet of paper" format (prints in Landscape) to save paper. The k-3 manual is 114 pages (printed) while the K-5ii/iis manual was 336 pages. The K-3 is therefore the equivalent of 228 pages in the K-5ii/iis format. Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)
Interestingly, SEPARATE from the "Anti-Aliasing Filter Simulator" there is a "Color Moire Correction" *1 and *2 to be found in the Playback Mode Palette Items. It says "The Color Moire Correction function can be used only for the JPEG images captured with this camera". I'm not sure what that means. It sounds like it uses the JPEG as the source file and then saves another corrected JPEG. Not sure why it would not use the RAW file as the source and then save a corrected JPEG. By the way, all of these in-camera editing and processing of image now require you to select whether you want the processed file saved to SD1 or SD2 now. Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)
HDR Capture brings a feature that many of us have wanted: The ability to change the Exposure Bracket value by +/- 1, +/-2, or *** +/-3 ***. In fact, this appears to be true HDR Capture now. It will save bracketed RAW or RAW+ files rather than working in only JPEG (and doing the combining FOR you in-camera). Not a lot of new light shed on the Pentax dedicated FLUCARD. Page 30 says SD2 slot is for FLUCARD or Eye-Fi card (or simply 2nd SD card). Pg. 37 details the "memory card settings". You have 3 settings: Sequential Use: use two SD cards sequentially (fill 1 then use 2) Save to Both (redundancy) Separate RAW/JPEG (RAW goes to SD1 and JPEG goes to SD2) Page 80 describes "Using a Wirelss Memory Card" and refers to Eye-Fi or FLUCARD. Flucard has only ON or OFF for "Enables/Disables Wireless data transfer with Flucard" while the Eye-Fi has three choices: Auto Select Off On Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 3:59 PM, Darren Addy wrote: > The file 'K3-OPM-EN.pdf' (10.1 MB) is available for download at > < > http://dropbox.unl.edu/uploads/20131106/f18c6bb0169fccba/K3-OPM-EN.pdf >> > for the next 14 days. > It will be removed after Wednesday, November 6, 2013. > > > -- > Nothing is sure but death and Pentaxes. -- Nothing is sure but death and Pentaxes. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
