Tamron states that this lens is only available in Canon, Nikon and
Sony mounts. Vistek is incorrect.

Received an email from Vistek here in Toronto, and they are telling me
that the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is available and special order, go figure.

Two to three week delivery.

Some places say no pentax mount, some are.

I'm confused, but still keeping the 28-75 order.

Makes me feel better buying sight unseen. I';m going through the guy i
usually deal with at Henrys in Newmarket, so it should be a pleasent

For some reason, for about 12 hours, it was available, or at least
listed, on the Vistek site. I sent them an email, and when i checked
the site again Sunday afternoon, it was not there.

Henrys site shows no limiteds available in stock, just as special
order, I keep forgetting about Downtown and Aden.

I don't need anything till near the end of February, so i can sit on
this for about 4-5 weeks and keep an eye out.
The Sigma 18-50 2.8 looks decent enough, should it come to that. I was
looking at the Tamron 28-75, but also unavailable.

I don't want to spend $1000 on a 16-50 that might only see use 1-3 times a year.

Maybe i'll watch eekbay for a while, although i'd rather not.

The organisation does seem to be doing very well. I went to the local outlet
of a national chain yesterday and, apart from there being _no_ film on sale at
all, the other notable thing was the empty spaces on shelves with "Pentax
(whatever)" on the label underneath.

Not sure I can quantify the difference...the images out of the 17-50
just don't seem to "pop" the way the ones from the 28-75 did, for me
at least. Keep in mind that I used them on 2 different bodies: the
28-75 on the *istD and the17-50 on the D200. I'm considering selling
the 17-50 and maybe at some point getting the Nikon 17-55 if I feel
the need. I agree, at 1/3 the cost of the Nikon, the Tam is a great
value, which is why I got it instead, but I just don't like it as
much.

Henry's Downtown should have the Limiteds, apart from the 31. If not,
Downtown Camera or Aden should have them. Stock is a little low after
the boxing week sales though, but I know Downtown at least is ordering
as much Pentax kit as they can get their mitts on, Stan's big beef
with Pentax is he can't get enough bodies to sell.

Re: Low light prime

2008-01-06 Thread David J Brooks
Well, i did some snooping on the big three's websites today. Very
disappointing. Seems most of the lenses i would like, are special
order now. The one 31 and one 43 ltd at Henrys are gone. I noticed
several Sigma and Tamron lenses in the 17-50 and 28-75 F2.8 range are
all special order. Same for the Sigma 31, 28,24 etc.
Vistek's FA 50 1.4's are special order, and just about all of Camera
Canada Pentax lenses are special order.

I did find at Vistek, listed as new, a Tamron af 17-50 F2.8 Di II LD
IF for $499. No product info but i looked at the listing for the Sony
mount.
It sounds like a good lens and if it performs like my Tamron 90
Macro(Nikon) i'd be happy. I would prefer to get a Pentax lens in this
range, but if i can a good quality Tamron for 1/2 the price, WTF.:-)

Any comments on these Tamrons.??

I quess all of the grumbling about lack of availability is true.:-)

I don't believe I've ever seen an FA* lens in person. Most are
relatively long lenses or big zooms, which I don't find myself using
all that frequently.

That it gets hot out in summer.:-)

Looks like the show is a go for Feb 23 this year.

Now, to decide. An FA 50 1.4, the 41 Ltd or the 16-50 F2.8.

The latter seems the better choice for me at this time, as i really
don't want to be spending a lot of time changing lenses, and getting
in their faces and obstructing the view for the paying customers. I
have the 77 which will let me get in a bit closer and not get in the
way. They usually do three songs, so i can do 1 with the 77 for tight
shots and two with a zoom for all round stuff. Humm that could
work.;-)

I want to use the K10D for this, as it has the SR and this will be a
great test for higher ISO's and hand held stuff.
Sooo, right now its the 16-50, so far. I will change my mind many
times this weekend.;-)

I'll assume that those that have this, are happy with it.

Re: Low light prime

2008-01-04 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I see people complaining about the 16-50/2.8 on DPReview a lot too.
But people there seem to complain about every insignificant thing all
the time. If something does not perform precisely as they want or
erroneously presumed it ought, then it's obviously faulty and you
have to whine about it.

I have used just the one DA*16-50/2.8 lens that is being provided to
me on loan. It seems to be a superb performer although I admit that I
continue to prefer using the DA14, DA21 and FA43 in this focal length
range instead. Fast wide-to-portrait-tele zooms are big and clumsy to
me.

I find the 21 and 43 to be my favorite people lenses, most of the
time, and both work well in low light ... I'm not afraid to use ISO
800 or 1600 when needed. If I were shooting more event/photojourno
type stuff, yes: the DA*16-50 would be on the camera more of the
time. Even though I don't like the bulk of it.

Most of my photos in these circumstances seem to float around a 35 to
40 mm focal length, or down in the 20-28 mm range, when using a zoom
depending upon the specific circumstances of the event.

Re: Low light prime

2008-01-04 Thread David J Brooks
Wheee. The 16-50 is almost the same price up here, as the 50-135. I
thought it might be less than the $950 on the web site.

They have a fair amount of stock. I just might wait and see if this
event gets the go ahead. If not, i'll keep waiting for the 60-250

Also forgot to add. At the church, i sit up front, so i'm usually from
8-20 feet away. Depends on if its a single performer or multy.I looked
at my May Exif and i shot most at 1/60 or 1/30 at f 1.8 to f 2.8, so
that might fit in there.

Re: Low light prime

2008-01-04 Thread David J Brooks
Good points. I had considered the 1.5 crop, but loosely.:-)

I thought about the 16-50 f2.8, but i get conflicting stories. Here
most seem to like the lens. Over at Pentax forums, a lot seem to have
problems with it.

I guess a trip to Newmarket to try one is best.

Now i just have to find out when Liz works late.:-0

To my mind, the 43mm is a bit tight for social event photography. Group shots
in limited space will be tough. Remember that's an FOV comparable to about a
65mm lens in 35mm, nearly portrait length. I think the 35/2 will serve you
better. Before I'd spend the money on a 43 limited, I'd ante up a bit more and
get the 16-50/2.8. That's the type of zoom most high-end wedding photographers
use for working a reception. It would be ideal for your purposes here.

I'm thinking that now myself. The local price is good. I can justify
that purchase, the 31 is almost $1000 here, thats a bit much right
now.

Thanks. Looks like i can get a 50 1.4 at Henrys. They would just have

them are in the extreme West end of the city or east end of the

Just grabed a shot that shows more or less the lighting.

I focused manually on the guitar, but as you can see, the stuff in the
back ground is in perfect focus, using my eye not the focus
confirmation info.. Look at the green guitar.

I use a Nikon 18-70 inside for my equine shots(flash ) and the
lighting is almost non existent, but get a decent success rate. I
don't know why all of these were off. At first i thought it was just
low shutter speeds and motion blur, but then i noticed all the back
grounds we;re OOF. II shot at f 1.7/2 most of the time so i should
have shallow DOF.

$470 at Henrys, they have some stock, and i usually get 10% off if i

Even when I use the AUTO focus on my FA50 f1.7, I find that it does
not focus accurately at all in dim tungsten lighting. Bleah. So I
wouldn't be too sure that the confirmation light/beeps would be any
help.

Maybe i'll bite and get the FA 50 1.4 AND an FA 35 2.0.

I'll check and see what i shot the A 50 1.7 at.

Vistek has the FA 50/1.4 for $199 right now. Hanry's should match that
price (they're listing at $220 last I checked).

For events like this, I generally use the FA 35/2. It's fast, yet it's wide
enough to give you coverage in tight spots. Depending on the level of
illumination in the room, it might be tough to get enough available light to
use the 77 indoors. You'll want at least 1/60th shutter speed, even with shake
reduction.

Sounds like you need a 31mm Ltd.

(My first subtle attempt at enablement for '08)

I highly recommend the FA 50mm f1.4. Very good bang for your buck.

Cheers,

Any 50/1.4 is going to be a good choice, an A series or later would be the
way to go.
Somehwere around the house I'm pretty sure I still have an FA50/1.7. I
recall it as being an excellent lens, and very inexpensive. The FA50/1.4
wasn't overly expensive and is around a half stop faster.
I have the A35/2 and the FA35/2, and am pleased with both, though I tend to
use the 31 more.
