I actually use a very thin pressure sensitive tape. The tape can be laid on the 
back of the covering then trimmed accurately using a knife from the front face. 
The backing paper is then simply peeled away and the covering stuck back on. I 
personally wouldn't touch glues, I've seen the mess repairers have made on my 
cameras :-(

You mean double back tape?
I think that would be a good idea, except I don't know how much/many
temp excursions it will take.

control.

Well I did my hardest working LX this way ten or so years ago and it's still 
holding up, of course I had to scrape away several layers of old glue first :-(
