And you haven't yet discovered LBA: Lens Buyer's Addiction.

Welcome to the fold.

My favorite photography book is Light, Science and Magic by Hunter, Biver and
Fuqua.

I've been using Linux since '93 (Yggdrasil running the 0.99 kernel) and bought
a mac for photo processing. I was running Bibble on Linux a few years ago, but
eventually switched to a lightroom on a mac for processing photos. The Mac UI
is a bit confusing, but you can always pop up a terminal and get to the nice
intuitive bash prompt.

The other problem that I ran into with linux was calibrating monitors, which is
possible in theory, but difficult in practice as the companies that make the
calibration tools want people to pay extra for the software to use them.

If you have any friends or family that work at Adobe, the employee discount is
definitely the way to go, lightroom is $25. The catch being that they only get
a limited number of licenses each year at that price.

First of all, you don't want that old M-50/1.7 -- let me take that off

Secondly, with regard to editing software, you might give The Gimp a

Hi Kenton - welcome!

Christine has explained the main acronyms - you might find the PDML FAQ
useful. It was compiled some time ago but we tend to forget it's
available:

http://pdmlpug.org/?page_id=47

If you're on Linux, the GIMP plus the UFRaw plug in would be worth a try
- certainly the price is right!

As for other resources on digital photography, there are lots of good
resources and tutorials on line; Eg:

* Digital Photography Tutorials:

* The Luminous Landscape:

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson and The Digital
Photography Book by Scott Kelby; both have been a good
introduction I think. I'm currently reading Creative Nature
Outdoor Photography by Brenda Tharp. Next on the list is
The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman. If anyone has
suggestions as to which other books I should be reading, I'm all ears.

I've never used any image manipulation type software other
than Picassa. I'm a Linux user and have evaluated Bibble 5
for a couple evenings. It's crashed on me a few times and
sucks all available memory and some swap when it imports RAW
and builds thumbnails. I might have to break down and get a
MAC at some point, if all Linux image software is this crash
prone. Bibble does have some cool tricks though. I really
like the heal/clone thing but I suppose other software
 packages have something similar.

OK, I do have a question:

Is there a page defining the acronyms used here, like: PESO,
GESO, PAW? If not, could someone enlighten me?

 Thanks,
 Kent

Welcome to the list. Controlling color temp with RAW shooting is fairly easy. I
just shoot on auto white balance and adjust during conversion – either to my
preference or, using the eyedropper, to a neutral color, like grey or white.
Getting out of Linux and into PhotoShop elements, PhotoShop or Lightroom, on
either a Mac or PC, will help in that regard.

It's excellent to read books for basic understanding and grounding with the
equipment etc, and I support that but do try to start taking pictures as
soon as possible. That's the fun part and you'll always learn by doing.
With digital it's much more affordable to learn this way.

Understood. I've taken over a thousand photos so far with the camera.
99.99% are crap and the rest are not quite crap. LOL But
I've learned a few things. One thing I've learned is my inability to
remember to change ISO and white balance. When the camera is in my
hands aperture and shutter speed is all I seem to think about. White
balance I've read isn't a big thing when shooting raw, but I've not
been able to take one photo shot on incandecent and one on cloudy,
with the same settings otherwise, look the same in Bibble. I should
probably make a mental checklist to go over before every shot.
 snip

PESO: Picture Every So Often, a solitary picture that you'd like to share
for fun or get critique on.
GESO: Gallery Every So Often: a collection of pictures, say from 6 - 12,
but not everyone holds to that limit, myself included :-)

PAW: Picture A Week: a photographer creates a collection of 52
pictures--one for each week of the year.

Thank you for the clarification. :)

Welcome to the list, Kent. Where in the midwest are you from? I'm from
 Chicago.

I'm living in Omaha. My wife lived in Chicago for few years, before
moving here. She really liked Chicago. My few visits have been
 pleasant as well.

 Thanks for your help. :)

Hi, I've been lurking for a few days here. I'm from the Midwest. I
bought my first DSLR about two weeks ago, a K-x with the 18-55mm,
55-300mm lens kit. I've got a 50mm M f/1.7 on the way, as well as a
polarizer and graduated filter. I also picked up a cleaning kit with
rocket blower and a manfrotto tripod and head. No one told me the
peripherals were going to cost so damn much. I feel like I'm
hemorrhaging money. LOL It's sad but true.

I know next to nothing about photography. I've read Understanding

I did that two years ago -- after 10 happy years of MS-DOS, 12 miserable years
of Windows, and one miserabler year of Linux. If I'd put Linux on better
hardware I mighta stayed, but I didn't and now I'm glad I didn't.

Just in the last month been discovering some really nifty writing- and
research-related Mac software that's also been around for years -- the whole
time I was miserabler'n around with that other crap.

Now, that you have been explained the meaning of all these letter

even PAWs if you decide to undertake the project.

You're in for the ride, but we're a gentle and friendly bunch, that
