hmmm, i'm not sold on this reference

it says Pentax Screw Mount without bothering to mention it is M42 and how

don't think you can distinguish Pentax Auto-Focus K from Pentax-Digital

here's a reference i bookmarked long ago when i was learning some of these

more important to me in thrifting etc. is recognizing which lenses are
special ? anyone know of a quick reference of that sort?

2011-12-03 Thread David Parsons
No matter who they are aimed at, if you can't see details in the
pictures, they aren't useful.

And, if I'm looking up a lens mount, I want to read what the features
of the mount are. ie: a three prong bayonet, 6 data pins at 5
o'clock, and an aperture lever at 3 o'clock.

I think it's a great idea, they just could have done better.

i should mention that i know i can trawl the lens database at pentaxforums.com

someone has compiled a quick reference of pentax-compatible lenses worth having

Hell, they left off a couple of versions of the Nikon mount, didn't
mention the Ricoh version of he K mount, nor the original K with no
electrical contacts nor the open aperture version of the M42 mount for
Pentax ES or SPF cameras, (there were also a couple of other open
aperture systems for other cameras using M42 lenses at least one of
which keeps them from mounting properly on Pentax K mount cameras with
M42-K adapter.

So not the list is not particularly inclusive.

Actually the FAJ and DA lenses lack the link to the Aperture Simulator,
(there I said it).

I didn't read all of the text, but I don't think they actually explained
the difference between the Canon Breach Lock system and Breach Lock
Bayonet system on the later FD lenses. An important issue if you happen
to find an early lens that you can't mount on your FD mount Canon.

There are aficionados scattered around the internet with reviews of
various K mount lenses, but a comprehensive listing. Not so much.
I've been working on reviews of the third party lenses in K mount that
I've used or owned and my opinions of them, but I'm far from finished.
Hum, I'll have to get back to that sometime. I also did a somewhat in
depth comparison of the Second and Third versions of VIvitar S1 70-210mm
lenses, that I think is available in the archives. Both are well worth
having. The third version since it was never released in an A version
is often available for less than $50.00 and gives very nice images even
on 14mp sensor cameras. It doesn't see a lot of use since I have the
Second version and a F 70-210 f4.0~5.6 both of which are much more
convenient to use.

thanks, i'll look for that review to add to what i have learned from Mark
Roberts' page:

http://www.robertstech.com/vivitar.htm

i have the 2nd version too; i don't mind manual focus but it is heavy and i
seem to get lots of chromatic aberration; like you, i use my F 70-210 more, but
i use my DA 50-200 most; long lenses are not my strong point

Re: OT: KEH blog, Lens Mount Guide

2011-12-02 Thread Joseph McAllister
My perspective on this is: If you use one brand of camera as we do, unless you
are a total newbie, you already know the Pentax system, and either have or know
where you can find out. The PDML is where you would go to find out that you
should go to http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/ for descriptions and drawings of
the various lens mounts through Pentax history.

These are useless unless someone gives you a lens that they, and you, have no
idea what it might fit. So tuck the URLs away somewhere in your browser, and
get on with it.
