A year or two ago, I was walking with my kids down the street in Toronto, and a stranger walking the other direction on the sidewalk smiled and said "hi". I reciprocated. Later that day, on the streetcar, I engaged in some superficial conversation with a fellow traveller. My kids I noticed my kids snuggling against me as if they were uncomfortable. I asked what was wrong, and they said that their mom (my ex) told them that it was wrong to talk to strangers. They were afraid for my safety, because I was "talking with strangers". I had a long chat with them, letting them know that it's okay to exchange pleasantries with people on the street, or have brief conversations with people you don't know (although one must be careful not to reveal too much personal info). It's all part of living in society. I know with kids it can be difficult to teach such nuances. It's easier to make things black and white. They like it that way, and it's easier to teach that way. Maybe it's easier to drill into them, "don't talk to strangers", and once they've taken that to heart to teach the exceptions. Still, I found it sad that my kids seemed to walk the streets in fear that they'd be approached or talked to. I don't want to minimize the problems of perverts and weirdos approaching little kids. But, there has to be some balance, and the post that started this thread shows what can happen when that balance isn't kept. -frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson

Re: OT: latest pedonoia story
So with all this pedonoia nonsense floating about, two days ago I met up with my brother for lunch in his small town (West Nyack). Went into a hippy-dippy dessert & lunch restaurant, sitting in the back room. Five-six tables. In the corner of the room are these two young women with a little girl. The little girl is wearing those eyeglasses made for young children ... they look very goofy and cute on her. I've got the little Panasonic LX1 with me, start snapping pictures. Remember: two men sitting at a table, shooting across the room. They notice me taking pictures, and start primping the little little girl to make cute faces and smile at the camera. Got one snap that looks really cute. We're about to leave ... walk over to their table, show them the photos on the LCD. They loved them. Gave 'em my card, told them to send me a note if they'd like a print. Nice folks, cute little girl. Sensible interaction. Sometimes I wonder about the sanity of the world at large. Sometimes I just know, shake my head, and keep on doing what I do. Godfrey

On a side note, I picked up a Mad magazine today. Haven't looked at one in years. One of the humorous articles (article? -- well, with cartoons) is about etiquette when dating one's teacher. Such as "It is not a good form to ask your school PTA to hold a bake sale to help pay your teacher's legal expenses." And "Like most people, teachers seldom enjoy mixing business with pleasure, so after a really steamy make-out session, don't ask her to give you extra credit." Mad's changed a lot since I read it many long years ago. But so has the world. Marnie aka Doe
