Fries are skinnier than the standard British chips. We gave up the
serving of those fat chips full of grease when some kid stepped on a
few one day, threw them back in the oil for a bit to clean off the
dirt and invented the Potato Chip. Some years later, an America's Cup
deckhand stepped on a handful, refried them to clean them up and
invented wrinkled potato chips for clam dips.

Only the American fast food joints call them fries.

Anyway, our democracies seem to be devolving back to totalitarian styles of

Re: OT - Oz is a big place.

2009-05-26 Thread Anthony Farr
This large area of open nothing is the biggest of our overseas
territories, which don't appear to be counted in the official statics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Antarctica,_Australia_territorial_claim.svg

And before anyone grumbles, the current Antarctic treaty recognizes
pre-treaty claims to territory. USA and Russia cry foul and try to
ignore the territories, but they didn't make the sacrifices when
Antarctica was first being explored so they missed out.

Oh dear, how sad, never mind ;-)

No, as Dave said, we call our fuel petrol, diesel or LPG (Liquified
Petroleum Gas). We only have ethanol as a 10% blend with petrol which
is called E10. Some truck and bus fleets use LNG (Liquified Natural
Gas) but the filling gear is costly and the range is limited so it's
only suited to near-to-base operations.

Any gas we get at roadhouses comes from eating roadhouse food.

Official numbers include territorial waters (lakes, rivers and waters
within the 12 mile limit or wholely enclosed). Canada has an unusually
large amount of said waters, around 800,000km2 due to Hudson's Bay,
the Great Lakes and the norther islands.

The largest democracy in the world, that's what we are!

At least that's the way it was expressed to us when I was a schoolboy,
back when the evil commies had control of the USSR. Not sure whether
Russia (which is still bigger than Canada, but not so much now that a
bunch of former USSR republics have gone their own way) is considered
a democracy today or not.

Perhaps a bit.
Australia is 7,617,930 sq km in area, Canada is 9,093,507 sq. km, or just
about 20% larger.

As I've never been to Sydney, and I have a couple of weeks off over

No, as Dave said, we call our fuel petrol, diesel or LPG (Liquified

is called E10. Some truck and bus fleets use LNG (Liquified Natural
Gas) but the filling gear is costly and the range is limited so it's
only suited to near-to-base operations.

Any gas we get at roadhouses comes from eating roadhouse food.

Here's a useful rule for life: never buy your food at the same place you
buy

your petrol.

Then you've never been to the Mobile station just west of Lee Vining, on the
'backroad' into Yosemite National Park, in California.
We stopped there in 1999 while photographing Mono Lake. I read clippings on
the wall from the N.Y. Post (?), raving about the menu & the food in
general. My wife & I ate there several times during our stay in Lee Vining
and actually looked forward to every meal there. And it wasn't just a
burger & fry joint. They had complete freshly cooked, somewhat exotic full
meals if that was what you desired. I got to talk to the cook & he told a
story of being from a big city restaurant and wanting to open his own
restaurant. Somehow he came to Lee Vining & opened up his restaurant in the
Mobile station with hopes of eventually opening a hotel/restaurant. Don't
know if he ever made it.

The Mobile station, brand new, at that time, had a full trapeeze setup of
swings, nets and safety devices on the premise, whic some of the employees
used during their free time - the most unusual 'gas station' I've ever been
to.

OK it's not that big, but W.A. is pretty bloody big. Especially if you
have to drive it.

BTW, a Canada 2010 trip is in the early planning stages.

In fact my father worked about 2 blocks from there, on Greene Ave in
lower Westmount. This was in the 50's and very early 60's and the
office was operated completely in English - even francophones who
worked there were expected to speak "the company language".

Things have changed quite a bit since then...

It depends on the amount of variation in the price of fuel.

If the next fuel station is much cheaper than the one you are
at, it makes sense to only buy enough fuel to be sure that you
will make it to the next one. Maybe, for them, that was $12.

Seeing it reminded me of an encounter with a couple of cute
American/Canadian backpackers at a roadhouse a month ago where they
had stopped to put $12 worth (!!!) of petrol in the van they were
driving.

Now considering that the last fuel stop was at least $25 previous &
the next one was a good 350km away & the high price of fuel, if left
me & my mate scratching our heads.

Here's my tip for anyone driving through the remote parts of W.A. This
here is a big ass state. If you are stopping for fuel - fill up. There
is no guarantee that the next roadhouse marked on the map will have
any fuel, or even if it sells fuel any more (had this happen earlier
in the year).

Now back to your regularly scheduled gear speculation/fondling/envy messages.

Cheers,

Dave

Australia has more poisonous beasties than the rest of the world
combined, there's a lot to be scared of. You should be happy thought it
gives those who aren't afraid lots of elbow room.

Dave,
Did they have more than $12 between them?
Any figures on what percent of Australia's population lives more than
10 miles from the coast. Does it get out of the low single digits?
Regards, Bob S.

Must have been from the northeast US or southern Ontario. Nobody else
in Canada would make that mistake (350km without gas is not unheard of
in Canada, although somewhat more rare than it is in Australia given
that the areas of Canada with population densities rivalling the
Outback mostly lack roads)
