Re: PESO: Dragonfly

2020-09-17 Thread John

Yeah, I use the center spot for focus too.

I don't know that much about dragonflies or other flying insects, but I have
observed that they sometimes move in patterns. If I watch them long enough they
seem to return to the same spot again and again - either to perch or to hover.

The only success I've had photographing them came from focusing on one before it
darts off, refining focus when it comes back and maybe being able to get the
shot the third time.

Of course, that only works with the ones that do come back again and again. I
don't know get good photos of the other ones

I keep meaning to RTFM for the K-1 and see if it will let you set a pattern
using just the center spot & the 4 spots that form a cross around it. But every
time I try to use all the spots it focuses on something else besides what I'm
trying to photograph.

I really haven't been doing much photography. This covid thing has sapped my
will and I hardly ever go out any more. When I do go out it's only to get an
errand done so I can get back into isolation.

The problem with dragonflies/damselfies (as well as butterflies) is their

stationary which makes it a lot easier.
But others like the great emperor move for hours very fast on sunny days (up to
38 km/h).
Fast AF tracking as on some newer model camera's may be helpful but you still
need  to get your subject in the centre of your viewer.

Either an immature male Sympetrum striolatum or a male Sympetrum vulgatum. Saw
one myself last weekend. Around here, it's a bit late for the former but the
latter is really rare. I still can't decide which one it was.

Of course I haven't reported this one.

I just went back to the original post and it worked in chrome running on
OSX. I suspect that the chrome URL parser is clever enough to figure
out that folks sometimes fumblefinger the slashes right after http: and
autocorrects it.

Dragonflies will pose for you. Really. Just get close to their perch and pop
your flash at them once, maybe twice. They may fly away, but not far, and will
soon return to the same perch, so keep focused on it.

They, being predators of smaller flying insects, will for a time stay close to
a new light source which might attract smaller insects and provide them an easy
meal. Or maybe they just think the flash is cool.

Works 66.66 percent of the time, the failures I attribute to anti-social
dragonfly disorder, or a full bug tummy.

Great shots, Walter. I prefer the first, as I find it more dramatic.

Just a little nit: I find that string (or thread or whatever) quite
bright and somewhat distracting. Perhaps it could be toned down just
a teensy bit.

Otherwise, both are amazing shots. Great detail, clarity and colours

Thanks Bob and Frank for the comments.
I almost grabbed a can of black spraypaint to paint the clothsline,
but figured the smell would drive the dragonfly away (I assume they
can smell?)
Believe it or not this is the first time I have ever photographed a
dragonfly. When I was a kid I used to play with them and get them to
land on a short stick and would carry them around like they were a
pet.
I will play with some of the shots in PS to see what I can do about the line.

Both very good, but I have to say - there have been many dragonfly
shots submitted to the Pentax Photo Gallery and your first one is
among my favorites. What really grabs me is the dragonfly towering
above me looking down like I was something to eat. It is most
dramatic! Love it!

Thanks Bruce. The little bugger kept twisting his head 90 degrees each
way and opening and closing his mouth like he was saying How do you
eat an elephant - One bite at a time! :-)
