- Original Message - From: Cotty Subject: Re: PESO: Eye Candy You'll need more paper towel when you see how much it has depreciated. Oh Man!! I can't believe how little some of this stuff is worth now. Fortunately, my 6x7 really earned it's keep. It did several hundred weddings, probably a thousand portrait shoots, and more vacation snaps than I care to count. Through it all, it's gone into the shop twice, once to cure the film advance of T-Maxitis, and once to repair a PC socket that I managed to pop out of its hole in the side of the camera while shooting jewelry for a local manufacturer. At that time, I had the flash bulb socket wired in parallel with the electronic flash socket so that if I managed to repeat the damage, I would still be able to shoot with ease. It's a great camera, no matter what the market values it at these days. Out of curiosity, what are LX's, black Mx's and black ME Supers worth these days? I really should let some of this stuff go to people who will use them. Which is what I paid for my then Mint LX, very lightly scratched, (bottom plate), MX and more or less brand new ME, (with 40mm f2.8), about 8 years ago. I'd say they've held their value, (or would have if I hadn't seriously scratched the LX), well compared to most 35mm cameras over that period. The last time my 6x7 kit was used was several years ago by the studio owner I work with. I think I already had the istD, so it was probably in 2004. The DSLRs didn't have the resolution yet for what he needed, so he used the 6x7. I used it in the spring of 2003 to photograph the an overview of a poker tournament at our local casino (a great story about security guard stupidy came from this one *). Prior to that, I haven't used it for much of anything since the fall of 2002. *So, I got sent out to shoot some overviews of a large card room where a bunch of wannabe card sharps were playing Texas Hold'em (whatever, I know nothing of this stuff). Everything was arranged, I had been assigned a time to arrive, and a window of time to shoot in. I got to the casino when I was supposed to, and checked in with the person I was supposed to check in with, and was ushered to a wrap around balcony and was told to go crazy, but could I please not take longer than a half hour or so. Security person #1 buggers off. I notice, as I am setting up that I have attracted the attention of some security drones on the floor below me. Security goon #2 comes up and asks me what I am doing. I explain that I am photographing the room, and gave him the name of the contact person at the casino. He goes away and confers with another goon. Security goon #3 comes along and points vaguely at someone on the floor who might show up as a coloured blob at best (probably 200 feet away) and tells me that I can't have that person in my photographs. At this point I have pretty much run out of patience with these morons. I tell him that I am contracted to be there and that his bosses are paying me to be there, doing what I am doing, and if said person doesn't want to be in my pictures, perhaps a half hour trip to the bathroom might be in order for her, and that he could make himself very useful by getting the hell out of my way, and perhaps escort the unwilling subject to said bathroom. This went over well.. So, he gets a little more pompous with me and starts blathering about how she is a member of the CIA and that her cover could be blown if there are pictures of her. At this point, I completely lost it on the guy, telling him that presuming he wasn't completely full of shit, I wouldn't really care if a foriegn spy's cover got blown, what the hell was she spying on at a casino in Asshole Saskatchewan, and that I was, in reality, an agent for the FBI checking on criminal gambling activities on foreign soil by members of the CIA, that he was close to blowing my cover, and that if he did, I'd see to it that his security guard days were over and that he'd end up in the next cell over from the CIA agent.
