Re: PESO: For Ken Waller
I have had to stop putting out feeders, except for hummingbird feeders. The deer rise up on their back legs to butt the feeders, and spill out the seed so they can eat it. Even feeders that are too high for them to reach (and therefore too high to easily refill) attract the deer to clean up underneath the feeders after the Jays and Cardinals pick out the choice morsels and scatter the rest. Once in the yard, they eat every tender shoot on every bush, and tempt my dog to chase them into the neighboring woods. Re: PESO: For Ken Waller
My photo position would normally frighten the birds, but they’ve grown accustomed to me. It took a lot of time, but they’re now used to seeing me and the camera in the yard about 20 feet from the feeders and close to the trees where they alight. Every time I go out there they scatter, and I have to wait about 20 minutes for them to remember that I’m part of the landscape. > On Apr 23, 2017, at 10:15 AM, Stanley Halpin > wrote: > > We have six feeders. Re: PESO: For Ken Waller
We have six feeders. Two are the standard plastic tubular type with a few perch on the sides and a tray at the bottom. Filled with what our feed store calls “cardinal mix.” These attracts cardinals, doves, sparrows, redwing blackbirds, grosbeak, red bellied woodpecker, blue jay and occasionally a variety of finch. The squirrels and turkeys used to raid these but I have figured out effective defense mechanisms. A third feeder with the same mix but only a small perch at the bottom attracts the tufted titmice, nuthatch, house finch, purple finch, gold finch. And a swarm of chickadees. The fourth feeder is a perforated aluminum tube for peanuts for the clinging birds. Hairy and Downey woodpeckers, Nuthatch, and occasional others. Then a fifth, for hummingbirds. And a sixth, for Orioles. We get both Baltimore and Barn Orioles. We’ve tried the suet feeders but our local birds don’t seem too interested. We site the feeders with the following in mind: keeping the squirrels out, keeping the turkeys out, keeping the feeders the right distance from our windows to minimize bird strikes, and giving us a nice view so we can enjoy the visitors. Oh, and photography would be nice but I don’t have positions that give me a good sightline without disturbing the birds. The turkeys learned that when I open the people-door out of the garage, that I might well be carrying bird food. And they would come running. And a few figured out that when the feeders were full, they could jump up, hit the bottom of the feeders with the top of their head, jostle enough seed to the ground for them to then find and eat… Some feeders now have fences on the ground around the bottom so the turkeys can’t get underneath, others have been raised just high enough so that even the best jumper can’t quite get to them. stan > On Apr 23, 2017, at 9:17 AM, Paul Stenquist wrote: > > Thanks Steve. Re: PESO: For Ken Waller
I've been using a finch mic that included thistle and other small seeds. I previously had only finch feeders so only small birds could feed, although woodpeckers showed up now and then. I now added a bigger feeder and filled it with a wild bird mix that includes sunflower seeds, but my usual crowd of small birds is still predominant. I expect others will arrive in time. It's been up only three dsys. I added the suet cage with a block of duet that includes some peanuts at the same time. The Titmouse went for that. The sparrows and chickadees like it as well. I expect woodpeckers will turn up. They dominate the suet feeders at the nature centers. I get these guys all the time, but mostly on my seed feeders. The suet is mostly vivited by woodpeckers - Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied. What seed do you use?
