Thanks, Paul. I really do need to work on my B/W eye. I've mostly used it as a fallback position when a color shot just refuses to turn out like like I want it. Which is strange, considering I've always felt more drawn to B/W images when they're well done. I guess it just takes a more discerning eye to spot a potential B/W shot, whereas potential color shots are often self-evident to the point of smacking me in the face. The sky was extremely clear that day, and as you can see from the direction of the shadows, the sun was pretty high in the sky.
