Re: PESO - Fifty for the Flag - Happy Canada Day!

2015-07-05 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Frank, that's a fun (and funny) catch.
But, as others have pointed out already, the combination with TNT is
explosive.

This reminded me of an old story:
Back in 1986, while it was still Soviet Union, - Russian city of
Chelyabinsk was celebrating its 250th birthday. There was a wall-poster
calendar (very nice-looking and thus popular) produced for that occasion.
It featured a photo of one of the large movie theaters in the center of
the city, with a large colorful flower bed in front of it. The top of
the calendar had a title in large font: "Chelyabinsk - 250". Right
below, at the top of the photo, along the roof-top of the movie theater,
there was a title of the movie that was showed when the photo was taken:
(translated from Russian) "Ordered to [be] destroy[ed]".

Since it was still in the earliest days of "Perestroika", and that mishap
was seen as potentially "political", someone in the city administration
lost his "warm chair".

Cheers,

Igor

Re: PESO - Fifty for the Flag - Happy Canada Day!

2015-07-04 Thread P.J. Alling
Well in the second list, Cuba gets an A, Puerto Rico gets a B??? They
are essentially the same flag with reversed colors. Liberia's flag
which is a copy of the US flag get's a B the U.S. flag gets a C?
Because it has too many stars??? So I guess plagiarism pays.

Flags are not pure design exercises, there are a lot of criteria that
makes a flag good, and being easy for a 5 year old to draw isn't one of
them. The Canadian flag is pretty good as flags go, and serves it's
purpose admirably.

Good luck with the new flag. As I already said, I think we have a wonderful
flag, and we certainly could have done worse:

There's an article here about posh poutine:

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2014/sep/07/poutine-the-posh-chips-and-gravy-taking-over-the-world

I thought about it while I was away in France. There's an Auvergnat dish called
Truffade which could be proto-poutine. It's made from sautéed potatoes mixed
with cheese (no gravy) and formed into patties. It's very nice. Gravy of course
is mere millimetres away. If you're having your truffade with a steak and a bit
of sauce, well there you have it all.

Aligot, which is mashed potatoes and cheese, seems to be a close relation, and
is very nice with sausages in onion gravy.

Living in a land where we still have that sort of humiliation, I envy
you!

Good for you!

I hope to visit some day. We have friends who have only just returned -
they had a great time.

Happy Canada Day, guys.

Cheers

Damn Right! Canada is one of the friendliest places on the planet,
and one of the most beautiful.

As a lad, my hero was Sgt Preston of the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police, although I like his dog, Yukon King, even better. As a
result, I have lived with Alaskan Malamutes for most of the past 50
years.

Now that Canadians have bought up most of Maui, I learned to say, "Aloha, eh"!

Peace and prosperity to all who reside in the great white frozen North.

Fiftieth anniversary was actually Feb. 15. But I've seen a bit of tie-in with
Canada Day this year.

Nicely done mural, a great shot of it, and an enlightening writeup
too, Frank. I had not heard that this is the 50th anniversary -- not
enough press, I guess. Thanks!
