Newer P&S's have really bad AF speed. For that matter so do iPhones.
Somebody handed me one to take a group shot of them; first time I'd
ever attempted that. After weaving the view around drunkenly for a
while to get them all in, and after one of them explained what the
"shutter" was, I was not astounded to witness the usual glacial
acquisition speed. What a crock.

I had the pleasant surprise of having the weekend off.
This afternoon I was at an event in SF called Lindy in the Park and
noticed
a fellow with a K20 around his neck. I wandered over and observed
that if

had a K-5, he wouldn't need to use his cell phone to video the dancers.
A while later, I saw one of the dancers chatting with a woman who had a
bright yellow K-01 with her. I had never seen one in person, so I
had to

go and take a look.

Yes, they look just as dorky in person as they do in the photos. I
got to

hold it though and it feels solid. Amazingly solid. The display was
astonishingly visible in broad daylight.
She said they bought it because they have a small child, and their point
and shoot just couldn't get photos. They'd press the shutter and by the
time it tookt he picture, it was long gone. They got the K-01
because it
was reasonably priced and because it had much better picture quality
than

their old camera.

She needs something that she can just point and click, and pictures will
come out reasonably well, and she is very happy with the camera on that
regard. It is weird to think in terms of a better point and shoot, but
that is what they needed, and that is what they got.

Probably a slow autofocus lock issue.

Re: Pentax sightings

2002-05-25 Thread Fernando Díaz del Castillo H.

I'm quite new to all this photography... we don't have Pentax representatives in
Colombia, but I bought my Spotmatic to a "professional" and he only uses Pentax... my
first book, by John Hedgecoe, has a Pentax in the cover and only Pentax in the inner
pictures... I have two teachers, one using a K1000 and the other a
Cannon.
The point is, even without official Pentax representation and service, I have seen
quite a few Pentaxes here in Colombia.

2002-05-24 Thread Pat White

On Thursday night, I went to the annual banquet of the Victoria Camera Club, and as it
happened, the two other photographers at my table were both PZ-1 users. I had my MZ-S
along to take pictures of a couple of speakers, and they were pleased to see it, with
one chap commenting on his high opinion of the FA 28-70 f4.

Here in Victoria, there are two big camera shops, Lens & Shutter and Kerrisdale
Cameras. L&S has an 11x14 transparency of an MZ-5n on a lightbox in their window,
while Kerrisdale has a large picture of an MZ-S as part of their lighted store sign.

Re: Pentax sightings

2002-05-24 Thread frank theriault

Hi, Pat,

Well, I think it's interesting, anyway! And, apparently, so do you.

Other than my (our) TOPDML buddies, I'm the only person I know who owns and uses
Pentax gear. Not that I know that many photographers (I use the term loosely when
referring to me!), but those that I know own C, N or Minolta. You see quite
a few K1000's locally, especially
during the school year - obviously Ryerson photograpy students. It was heartwarming
to go to the zoo last weekend with the kids, and see a coupla older Pentaxes: an ME
and an ME Super. I went to talk to both of them (the owners, not the cameras), but
neither seemed too eager to
discuss their cameras ("who's this weird man coming up to me, and why does he want to
talk about my camera?").

>From what I see on this list, Pentaxes seem to be pushed at the camera stores here in
>Canada a bit more than in the US, Henry's having a huge Pentax sign out front, the
>same size as the other "big two's" signs.

But in the media, it's another thing all together. So, when I see a Pentax being used
by a pro (or amateur for that matter) it's a matter of great excitement. It's almost
as if we're using a "cult" or (as you said) underground product or something!

I guess it's up to us to keep the brand alive, as Pentax sometimes seems to be less
than willing to do so...

regards,
frank
