I honestly thought it was not *that* difficult. At any rate, we know they can do it ... Boris

Re: Question or better yet, idea
I think someone ought to hold their feet to the fire, so they come up with a compatibility scheme to hook all my SMC K-mount lenses to my Optio-S4! Now, there's an idea whose time has come! Not that there's anything wrong with YOUR idea, Boris, but this one came immediately to mind, so I had to bring it up. keith whaley Boris Liberman wrote: > > Hi! > > Pentax has proved by giving an example that a camera with crippled > mount is not really so crippled. And hacks are fine. Kludges are usually a mess. RE: Question or better yet, idea
I should have said it another way, I guess. The mount has not changed, only the firmware has changed. I don't see any reason for anyone to claim it's a crippled mount, either before or after the firmware update. The firmware update just automates what I used to do myself. That works great with screwmount lenses on a screwmount adapter. There is no way to do stop down metering with K/M lenses though unless you remove the aperture lever from the lens, or hold the lens rotated 15 degrees on the mount. Neither solution is ideal. The new firmware fix gives you better than stop down metering. It is a nice solution. alex _ Have fun customizing MSN Messenger learn how here! http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/tracking/reach_customize

RE: Question or better yet, idea
That's really strange, the "crippled mount" idea. I was using my Zenitar fisheye in aperture priority with version 1.0 of the firmware and had no problems. Pentax has proved by giving an example that a camera with crippled mount is not really so crippled. I wonder, whether they can produce an firmware upgrade for *ist, MZ-30 and similar cameras... Especially, with compatibility with M and K lenses, *ist may become quite attractive camera, right? What do you say? Do these have electronic DOF preview? Do they have a way to upgrade the firmware? I was talking to a friend about the chances of the baby-D having the same functionality. Being paranoid (and excluding the possibility that people could perhaps patch the firmware themselves based on the *ist-D fix), I thought that they will be selling the cheap DSLRs at or near a loss, hoping to make money from accessories, and what better than lenses. Same would be true for the cripple-mounts (anybody still thinks that there was an unsurpassable technical problem to K/M compatibility and thus there is a need to rename this mount? :-) Kostas p.s.: I admire Pentax's customer application. To put out the fix before milking the cows with the forthcoming DA16-45 is commendable (if not commercially wrong).
RE: Question or better yet, idea
I say that since the *ist is not a digital camera per se, there would be no way to "upgrade" the firmware, without sending it back to Pentax to have whatever ROM chip that holds the operating information, upgraded or replaced.
