Re: RAW overload
If you select half a dozen and go into the Develop module, you can have all edits apply to the group in one of two ways: - turn on AutoSync (on Mac OS X, hold down the Command key and click the button at the bottom of the RH panel; on Windows, I believe you use the Control key to do the same). - make adjustments to one, then click Synchronize, pick which parameters you want to synchronize and apply them. You can also make all your edits to one, return to Grid view, then copy and paste the edits to as many others (one at a time or in groups) as you want. Re: RAW overload
Lightroom reads the RAW data and performs whatever edits you want on it dynamically, so in essence everything you are seeing is a processed RAW file if the files you imported are RAW files. It does not render the image out to an RGB file format (PSD, JPEG, TIFF) until you say "Export" or tell it to edit a file in Photoshop or other image editor. This is a major advantage as it saves space on the hard drive. You can export anywhere from one to as many photos that are in the library at any time, so it is automatically batch converting whenever you want it to. I'll follow this thread, as i have a bunch from the weekend, all shot in Raw. I managed by accident, to bring ina small card to LR on Friday, as the reader was still pluged in to the laptop. If one brings into LR the card of rae files, are we doing a batch raw conversion, or are we looking at just orginizing and exporting to a file. I have skimmed Bruces book, but i'll have to look again. I need a LR book aswell. I think Scotts is available here now. P.J., If I had a link, I'd be done... The main focus initially is to weed-out the crap (easy), Pick the best of the better ones (harder), and get the rest formatted for a web gallery so you guys and the family can see them. There may be a print or three made but as I've stated before, that's going to be an exercise in frustration for me. CW - Original Message - From: "P. J. Re: RAW overload
I think pick and choose what we all do, Paul. :-) For my own part, I think the most overwhelming about it is the sheer volume suddenly piled up. Btw, I envy you having the opportunity to shoot that much on a regular basis. :-) Jostein 2007/7/1, Paul Stenquist <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > I don't convert all my RAW images. Not even close. As others have mentioned, Adobe Bridge makes fairly short work of sorting through the raw files and picking the "winners." I just started using Lightroom earlier in the week, and it's even more streamlined at sorting through pictures. I also am starting to like the conversion process in Lightroom (well, the Develop mode), and the raw converter has more tweaks than the older version. Both programs have a filmstrip mode that will let you see a medium-sized preview of the shot, and use the left/right arrow keys to move through the pictures. Memorize a couple of hot keys for flagging the pictures, and you'll make short work of flagging the good ones. I don't yet do the keyword tagging thing, but I suppose I'll have to learn that in time. :-) I had around 500 shots from my vacation trip. It took a little while to convert them to DNG's and read them into lightroom, but I've been able to spend a little bit of time doing sorting and conversion every night. -Mat -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

I don't convert all my RAW images. Not even close. Pick the best ones. I probably shoot 300 to 500 frames a week, regardless of where I am. Just pick and choose. 700!?! That's nothing mate, I came home with 3600+ :-) Unfortunatly my computer is still down so I'll have to wait until it's up & running before I can make a serious start on sorting/editing. Re: RAW overload
What Godfrey said. This is the reason I installed Lightroom when I returned from Iceland with over 1200 shots. It made the process much easier than even Bridge could, because there are so many different ways to view, rank and organize your photos. It's *much* faster than doing it one photo at time. I still spent days editing the photos, but it was much more pleasant than it would have been with Bridge alone. You need to understand workflow when working with large numbers of exposures. I strongly recommend "Real World Camera Raw with Photoshop CS2" by Bruce Fraser. (It's equally applicable to CS3 or PSE, in concepts. For Lightroom, there are books by both Scott Kelby and Martin Evening which can give you an idea how to deal with large numbers of photos efficiently.) In PS CS2-3 with Bridge, organize your photos into large sets of similar values. Set RAW parameters for one, then copy and paste to all the others in the set. Once all the sets are 'roughed in', break them up into smaller sets and do over. Now sort them and discard the ones not worth processing, cull down to a reasonable number, and batch convert to Photoshop or TIFF format. In Lightroom, the entire environment is designed to do this process quickly and efficiently with hundreds of files at a time. I go out shooting several times a week and return from each session with 60-300 exposures, it's a 20 minute task to import, keyword, do a first pass sort, and set up rough settings for each session, producing images good enough to determine validity for inclusion in a project and further processing. > BTW, I took the K10 with two full batteries and forgot the > charger. I bought one from BestBatt.com for $20 that works great: http://www.bestbatt.com/Konica_Minolta_NP_400_Battery_Charger_p/ bbnp400chg.htm Works with both AC and automotive 12VDC power. Know how you feel, Cory. Sorting through a similar pile of shots from my trip north. Btw, In lack of a 12V car charger for the K10D, I bought a cheap inverter and used the regular 230V charger instead.
