Re: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D

2003-12-03 Thread Tanya Mayer Photography
Bruce, I too have purchased from Adorama and had no problems, which is why I
was confident to post their price here on list. I have also purchased from
Keh.com and BH, and have never had problems with either (and come to think
of it, never had to pay GST either!). Of course, it is pretty scary though
when you do read the Photo.net reviews (and I have always done this in the
past) that Ryan posted, BUT if you put it into perspective - these places
are HUGE and probably do like 200 mail orders per day, so if these reviews
are anything to go buy, in reality the problematic transactions are really a
very small percentage of their overall custom. Mind you, it still pays to
be wary of these things.

In regards to Keh.com - it seems that they don't seem to be stocking many of
the latest equipment available. They don't list the *istD on their site. I
purchased something very small from them like 2 years ago - (I think it was
a hotshoe slave module), as a bit of a test run. Well, even with me being
in Australia, I received the package within a week of my purchase, and to
this day, continue to receive their catalogue in the mail every couple of
months. I was really impressed with their service and wouldn't hesitate to
buy from them again - it is a shame that they don't seem to be offering the
stuff that I am after though!

 Hello Ryan,

I have to say that I have had very good luck with Adorama. I have
purchased from them very often and I feel that they are about as
reputable as BH - at least from a mail order perspective. I have had
 no hesitation in using them.

Ryan, definitely try www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au or
www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au . I have purchased from both and have always
been extremely happy. Dirt Cheap Cameras are particularly great - I ordered
my 360fgz from them and although it was out of stock at the time, I still
had it at my post office within 7 days of my phone call (it wasn't listed on
their website), AND the added bonus was that they deliver COD meaning no
credit card fees. Both of these sites have the absolute CHEAPEST equipment
I have found ANYWHERE, and have always beaten Photocontinental hands down.
Also, when it comes to scanners/printers/software etc, be sure to try
www.estore.com.au they are fantastic too!

With overseas transactions, I DO prefer BH as well, but as I said in my
last post, I have always been really happy with KEH.com too.

 Hey Bruce..
Noted :) I was just comparing the good/bad reviews for Adorama and BH
 http://www.photo.net/neighbor/one-subcategory?id=2 and though I haven't
used

Australia). Then again I'd prefer to buy directly from a person in a
physical store- but when you're faced with the significant price
differences
(esp. compared to Australian retail).. sigh..

Re: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D

2003-12-03 Thread Ryan Lee
Hey Tan! I heard reviews of dirtcheap too. Generally excellent. Only thing
is it doesn't seem as cheap as it's supposed to be? I just looked to
compare, I bought my 5n at PC for 650, at dirtcheap it was 670. I got my
Sigma EX 28-70 2.8 for 950, dirtcheap has it for 970. And that excludes
postage doesn't it? And that was when I discovered (too late) BH had that
lens for roughly USD350 including postage (maybe USD400 including whatever
tax they want to put on it)!! Talk about falling off cloud 9.. So that's
when I decided to ignore Aussie sites for future mailorder. Btw, I can't
seem to find a price for the 360fgz on dirtcheap? I know it's about AUD450,
and I'm wrapped I got mine off an Ebayer (in a non-ebay sale) for only
AUD200, in great condition, albeit without the soft case.. Oh also, another
site you might want to check, http://shop.centre.net.au/index.html . A
cursory inspection sees slightly cheaper prices for the mentioned items than
dirtcheap. Not to mention the fact they seem to sell just about anything you
can think of (maybe not apples ;))..

Anyway, I can afford not to pay too close attention to the mailorder scene
these days. I know exactly where my next buys are coming from. I want a
Singh-Ray Blue Gold 77mm polariser (for wide angle) which seems to come up
over and over again in several landscape photography sites I've visited,
http://www.singh-ray.com/goldnbluearticle.html
and two or three ND Grad filters and a Cokin P holder
http://www.singh-ray.com/grndgrads.html
to bring along for a 4 day camping/kayaking trip up at Cooloola come
Australia day (I hear some places the water is so black and reflective that
you can't tell what is reflection and what isn't!)
The thing with those purchases is I won't have to deal with as much
organisational bureaucracy (as BH/dirtcheap/Adorama etc..). I hear the
Singh Ray service is top notch, and if you call them, you're more than
likely to speak to Mr Singh himself..
If I have my finances in order by then, I'll probably want a Sigma EX 17-35
2.8-4 (the new 77mm version) but I'm guessing it won't be out b4 the trip,
so I'm not going to let myself too fussed. Sigh! So many things to get..
Winning a certain Chrissy $30 million Gold Lotto would be nice.. Then my
main decision-to-make would be what colour I want my Pentax cabinet to be,
and whether I want that same colour for my Canon, Leica, Nikon, Hasselblad,
Bronica etc. cabinets..

:)

Ryan, I had never seen the shop.centre site before, and I am quite
impressed. I have bookmarked it and will be sure to check it regularly -
and, like you said, it has the added advantage of selling all manner of
stuff, not just camera gear...

With regards to dirtcheap - they don't have the 360fgz on their site, you
have to ring them. I purchased mine from them for $473 including all
postage costs. Photocontinental had it for $479 PLUS postage and it was out
of stock for at least 10 days - hence my decision to go with dirtcheap. But
boy did you get a bargain - only 200 bucks! Not sure about their other
prices, but when i bought my MZ-6, they were the cheapest by far. I think
they were like $100 cheaper than their nearest competitor. I have some
catalogue work (kids clothing) coming up, and I too need to get some new
polarisers, so I would be interested to hear how you go with yours...

Busy day ahead, must keep moving!
