Re: Upcoming October PUG and ultimatum

2007-09-25 Thread P. J. Alling
Long ago and far away when I was a graduate student, my University still
had keypunch machines and card readers, just in case. However my horror
story doesn't really involve those.

I worked the midnight to 4AM shift two days a week to help pay for my
Masters, as an assistant administrator. My job was to take in card
decks, set them up in the reader match them up with the printed output
and file them until the user picked them up, and give out the correct
cards and output to users, (and yes some did show up between midnight an
4am). In between I kept track of our high speed IBM printers and reload
them with paper when they'd alarm and the soundproof covers would
clamshell open, and keep track of the system to make sure all was well,
(not that I was authorized to actually fix problems, I was supposed to
call a real administrator to press the reset button)

One night I wasn't keeping as close track of paper supplies as I should
have, and one of the decks was running low. I had just had delivered a
really greasy Greek style pizza and had placed the box on top of one of
the soundproof covers. Wonder of wonders it had arrived hot, to hot to
eat in fact. So while I waited for it to cool I put my feet up on a desk
and was reading my experimental statistics book. Suddenly a bell begins
to ring, and I watched with helpless horror, as the printer cover clam
shelled open, dumping my dinner face down on the floor.

Re: Upcoming October PUG and ultimatum

2007-09-23 Thread graywolf
Kind of interesting that you pop up with NZ being an island (a couple
actually),
but I do not see any mention of NZ in my post. Also NZ averages much farther
south than Australia.

Australia may be the smallest continent, but it is still a continent and I do
not think it can be called a small land mass. I will not argue about water
moderating weather as I grew up in Michigan. Still, I notice that most of the
population of Australia is on the south coast. For what it is worth Sydney
seems
to be about the same latitude south as San Diego is north. None of this is any
kind of news to those down under, but may be to one or two of us in the US.

BTW, Mexico has water on both sides and the trade winds blow across it still it
is kind of warm down there. Also the UK is tempered by the warm gulfstream
current just being surrounded by water does not moderate their weather all that
much by itself.

John Francis wrote:

That's why the UK doesn't have the same climate as Hudson Bay,
and NZ is far more temperate than Mexico (or inland Australia).

A few years back, when I went off to college, you could get a telephone
in the dormitory suite (4 rooms sharing a common bathroom). The portion
of the telephone bill you had to return to *THE TELEPHONE COMPANY* with
the payment came printed on IBM punch cards (pre-punched with the
account number and payment amount).

The dormitory was near the back of the Comp-Sci building where in the
basement (dungeon) the university kept keypunch machines available all
night long for the students to work on their programs.

This was also the era of Draft Beer - Not Students!

The rest, is as they say, left as an exercise for the student.

Ah, do it by hand, it is only 2000 cards... Those were the days, a programmer
did not even have to know how to type, just hand the code sheet to the key
puncher, and then spend a week trying to figure out why your program did not
work only to find out the keypuncher missed a line.

Nope, I don't know what it means...

My high school was next door to a vocational school that was still
teaching people to feed cards into readers - in 1993! I had a friend
who took the classes and learned early on to never, ever, carry the
cards in hand down the hallways.

He died at the console,
Of hunger and thirst.
Next day he was buried,

No, it's not. The upload form limits the photo to 256k. The

Okay, I submitted a PUG. It had -nothing- to do with

A paucity of digital autumn pix caused me to dive into

something from November 2007. Boy, am I ever out of

Now the ultimatum. If I don't see a few more photos over the next

I actually didn't know (and hadn't checked) what this months theme was.
Seeing as it's been broadened to includes Nature colours I should be able
