Just got in. Nothing happening tonight. Not a sausage. Collective opinion
is that it will be weekend at earliest, as Friday is a holy day. Very
cold and although One-Eyed Bob, our electrician, had a battery light up,
a nice Sky News cameraman pointed his redhead at our reporter for a 3/4
light. Plenty of photographers about, but they were all over at the south
side of the runway, non using Pentax AFAIK (on topic!)

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

What "Gamma scale" are you talking about? Gamma, in it's normal use has
nothing to do with color temperature or rendition.
Making sweeping generalizations for a maker's lens line, that could have
dozens of different lenses, is certain to be wrong for a pretty fair
number of lenses.

There'll always be a few people who complain, I just ignore 'em. You
can't change the nature of a person, but you can give them zero
attention. That and the utter nonesense spouted by MacBurt recently. Shit
happens. We obviously have an unmoderated list, and these things are the
unfortunate byproducts. I don't give them a second thought, just get on
and read the stuff that's interesting, delete the rest.

Actually I think this is a great place to hang out. Just like many have
said before, it's like a bar. There's regulars, passers-by, hangers-on,
loiterers, undesirables, friendlies, all sorts. But it's not a bad bar,
and you can pick and choose who you chat with, who you listen to. The one
undeniable draw that brings everyone in is the Pentax gear. Anything else
is spurious, and either light relief, or unwelcome intrusion. Earwig or

Me? No, I'm not perched on a stool at the end of the bar puffing on a
briar like Doug Brewer nor am I stood in close proximity, pint in
hand, ready to unleash wit and wisdom like Mr Robb, nor am I sat in a
comfortable chair holding court at a table like Cesar and Annsan et al.
No, I'm sprawled over an entire table in a corner, Leatherman at the
ready, tweaking some bit of kit or other, keeping half an ear cocked for
the tidbit, half an ear for the jokes, and half an ear for the odd scrap.

I'm with you. I picked up a Pentax ES from repair this morning.
The camera is old and battered (experienced). I bought it used on ebay.
I've got the SMC 50mm f1.4 Takumar that Mike J. raved about on it.
The feel of this whole system is wonderful and the image in the viewfinder is teriffic.
Finding the camera and lens were part of the fun. Now the exposures will be OK too!

I even agree that the Canon AF system is more advanced and more complete.
If someone wants IS, USM, eye-controlled AF sensor selection, AF
teleconverters, and zooms like the 17-40/f4 USM or 70-200/f4 USM, then
Canon EOS is the system to choose.
Canon AF, and Nikon AF, system are more complete - yes. But the new AF
system in the *ist seems very promising indeed. Not just one cross sensor -
several of them. Probably very fast too.

Pentax doesn't have to make all lenses with USM and IS, but they should use
this technology with lenses that needs them the most.

A good starting point would perhaps be...
FA* 28-70 f/2.8 AL (USM), FA* 80-200 f/2.8 ED (USM), FA* 300 f/2.8 (USM),
FA* 300 f/4.5 ED (USM, IS), FA* 400 f/4.5 ED (USM, IS).

Or simply releasing the IS teleconverter that we have seen rumours for
before. That would be a nice idea, a real technological breakthrough.

What's missing in Pentax lineup, is good medium market lenses. Pentax hsa a
good selection for beginners and the entry level market, and they have nice
lenses for advanced amateurs and pro's (FA*, Limited). But the medium
market? It's especially the zooms that's lacking. We have FA 24-90 f/3.5-4.5
and FA 20-35 f/4. But we don't have nice telephoto zoom, like Minolta
100-300 APO or Sigma AF 100-300 f/4 EX. We need a FA 100-400 f/4-5.6 ED (IF)
and FA 70-300 f/4-5.6 ED. (with USM of course).

And AF teleconverters of course, sure we can use Kenko - but it would be
nice to have an AF TC with "Pentax" and "SMC" on it... :-)

Best wishes,
Roland
