Well, they went from 'm' to 'x'. M is the 13th letter of the modern
Latin alphabet. X is the 24th letter. So they're adding 11.

(24 + 11) mod 26 = 9

The ninth letter of the alphabet is i, so presumably the next one is
going to be the K-i, which suggests all manner of marketing
possibilities. (Hopefully not those involving Bruce Willis.)

No, but it ensures that you'll buy a new lens much sooner - besides the
bayonet, there are more metal parts replaced to plastic ones inside.
OTOH, I have had plasticky FAJ 18-35 for many years, and it 's still

Attaching the metal plate is a labour-intensive step. If they can avoid
that, it's probably a good boost to the margin.

Also, if they're going to do even four lens barrel colours, that implies
a fairly major automation push for lens manufacturing. Taking the
human with a screwdriver step out is likely a significant win.

The writeup doesn't mention a lens hood, either; makes it hard to tell
what the weight savings is, beyond somewhere between 15 and 50
grammes. If it's a new, integral hood design, or no-hood, that would
be a larger change than just more plastic in the construction.

own line of L glass, aimed squarely at the cost-conscious end of the
market.

I don't take this a particularly bad news. The camera isn't my first
choice, but a lot of people will like it. It has a higher frame rate
than anything I currently own and with the video capability I'll be it
has a reasonable buffer. Might even make a decent backup body for a
K-7. This looks like the new standard in entry level cameras. The new
lens is aimed at the same demographic. Every camera company has made
bargain products in the past, and currently hopefully Pentax will sell a
boat load of these at a high enough margin that they can support the
higher end models, limited and * lenses.

Well... no. In US or Western Europe it would be really cheaper to hire
a robot. In rest of the world, low-paid human with screwdriver is MUCH
cheaper than screwdriving machinery. I've worked for years in mobile

cost calculations. Don't forget, that Pentax lenses are made (not even

It's a new intro model, sure.

It's a rather ferociously spec'd intro model, and it's, possibly for the
first time in living memory, a place where Pentax is out in front of all
the other camera companies in marketing something.

Supposing that 50/50 split on male/female buyers for the white K-m is
true—I have no reason to doubt it—this is potentially a significant big
deal.

I'd prefer that Pentax was out in front for reasons related to image
quality, but, hey. It's a horrible economy. Pentax can sensibly enough
take what they can get, it's leveraging Hoya's manufacturing expertise,
getting more outright new DSLR shooters is a good thing, and the 55-300
is optically really seriously good for what it is. If people's intro to
Pentax kit takes really good pictures, well, they might spend more money
on Pentax over time.

Somehow Bob's buttocks were more, um, sensational.

It's bad enough to discuss Bob's buttocks without discussing the
sensations thereof.

Those cheap lenses have HUGE manufacturing tolerances. If the product
itself and the production processes are designed properly, there should
be literally no way to assembly done wrong. Call it manufactural
foolproofing if you like. In other words, kit lenses and precision
assembly are from different worlds.
What's about our made in vietnam friends? Either those lenses are not
foolproof in manufacturing (burn the production engineers) or there's
too weak quality control (burn the final quality controllers). Don't
blame the line workers - if there's something that CAN be done wrong,
they DO it wrong. Bring on the automated machinery and it will go even
worse. Been there, seen that.

It's not just Pentax. This We're going to make a big announcement on such
and such a date some months in the future and building up to it with a
continual hype always leads to disappointment.

You're going to announce it on the 17th, fine, I'll look in on it on the
 18th.

Another way to not be disappointed is to not have any money for
purchases. Hence, I was not disappointed with the Leica M9.

That said, I am *very* disappointed I had to waste 15 minutes TODAY
reading about tomorrow's release:

http://photorumors.com/2009/09/16/breaking-new-pentax-k-x-coming-out-tomorrow/

What am I going to read tomorrow? The international news

P! Humbug!

Well, from my point of view the announcement never lives up to the hype,
and that's not just Pentax. I find I'm less disappointed by any
announcement if I make an effort to ignore the hype preceding it.

Not much of a recommendation. I've also got a like new FAJ 18-35. It

I find it a bit more soothing just to check the Pentax news the day
AFTER their scheduled announcements.

It's not just Pentax. This We're going to make a big announcement on
such and such a date some months in the future and building up to it
with a continual hype always leads to disappointment.

You're going to announce it on the 17th, fine, I'll look in on it on the
