ME Super film transport (Was Re: ZENITAR-K 2.8/16 FISH-EYE LENS - Peleng 8/3.5?)

I've got an ME Super with quirky transport. One day (without film) I could continually crank the wind lever, without tripping the shutter - that was freaky. Then I turned the mode dial and I couldn't reproduce the fault again. Another time, I took a photo and the mirror locked up. (This is DIFFERENT from when you trip the shutter in auto mode and it is too dark.) Turning the mode dial didn't have any effect. I put lens cap on and rewound the film. And I did something else and the camera was fine again. Lucky too, since that was the day I left both my MX and other ME Super at home. As it turned out, the mirror was up but the shutter was closed, since there was no fogging of the film when I developed it. No idea why any of this happened. RE: ZENITAR-K 2.8/16 FISH-EYE LENS - Peleng 8/3.5?
The mounts for the Peleng are M42 and Nikon F only. What the other mounts are is seller throwing in a M42->EOS adaptor, M42-K adaptor, etc. and that raises the price. Keep in mind that's .3m from the film plane, which makes about 6"-8" from the front element seem right. At F22 and minimum focus distance something about 2" from the front element should be in focus. Re: ZENITAR-K 2.8/16 FISH-EYE LENS
It's a nice little lens. At $130 or whatever they are selling for now they are a bargain. When it comes to superwides it blows the Vivitar 19mm away with better color, contrast, and flare resistance. The lens construction seems solid, but the aperture ring on mine turns about 1/2 stop past F22 - which doesn't stop down the lens anymore, but does affect metering. My lens cap broke within a week, one of the springs fell out but the cap still works ok. Also, the aperture ring doesn't quite line up right for cameras with the optical aperture window (KX, MX, some Ricoh bodies). The lens comes with 4 filters, clear, red, yellow, and green. A filter must be installed for proper focus. The filters are useful for B&W, but for color you'd just use the clear and let the others collect dust. Changing the filters is a PITA. Despite the couple of problems I have had, I still say the lens is a bargain, and I recommend it. Todd At 01:58 PM 11/12/01 -0700, you wrote: >Any comments on this lens? Re: ZENITAR-K 2.8/16 FISH-EYE LENS - Peleng 8/3.5?
I just "bought" (having trouble getting the guy to send me an invoice with the correct shipping amount) the Zenitar in USA, but I live here. BTW, my film transport just locked on my ME Super. I thought the camera wasn't working at all. So I managed in the dark to wind the film till it stripped off the sprockets. Thought I had it all, but the film had broken inside leaving about 5 frames around the take-up reel. Does anyone know why this happens? Happened with an MX once as well. RE: ZENITAR-K 2.8/16 FISH-EYE LENS - Peleng 8/3.5?
How about the Peleng 8mm 3.5, does anyone have one of these? Comes standard with M42 and Nikon F mounts, others available as it is a preset T-mount lens. Made in Belarus. Designed for slightly wider Soviet film, so you don't quite get a full circle. Available on ebay, or here http://www.geocities.com/belshop/ Also, have any Australians bought either the Zenitar or the Peleng? I recall seeing the Peleng up on sold.com.au, but the price was high. I wouldn't mind acquiring one of these, probably the Zenitar, but am not sure of the easiest method (Russian/American Ebay seller/net store/list contact?) Finally, why the price difference between the mounts? The BIN is ~US$110-170 from M42 through K, EOS/FD, F. Is it simply brand snobbery, or a matter of complexity and diaphragm operation? Re: ZENITAR-K 2.8/16 FISH-EYE LENS
Hi Tom, I own the Zenitar (it's my second one) and I can say it's a very good performer. I don't know how it compares to Pentax fish-eyes, though. When I first used it in 1997 (on the Z-1p) the results seemed poor, with wash out colors, but it was my fault for not metering correctly (I had mostly FA and A lenses with me and trusted too much the meter of the Z-1p - bought brand new few weeks before - to care for the exposure... shame on me :-(). In 2000 I brought the Zenitar with me in France. The results were astonishing! Brilliant colors, no flare, almost no internal reflections even with the sun in the corner of the frame. The resolution seems really high, too. I have some shots I can send you off list if you wish. Like most Russian lenses, the color rendition is slightly on the warm side, but it goes almost unnoticed. It should come with some screw-in filters (UV, Yellow, Orange and Red). A filter must stay always on the lens (it's part of the optics, the lens cannot focus at infinity without). Hope this helps. I have one in Pentax K-mount. It's a very good lens, especially considering the price. It's really a good performer, so don't let the low price put you off. You could buy the Pentax equivalent, of course, and have a better lens but you'd have to use it a lot to justify spending that much money.
