Thanks everyone!  The last photo was a victim of an in-camera creative filter

That's not bad at all, and you can improve them with a quick noise
reduction in ACR / Lightroom. For even better results you could try
noise reduction on each channel individually in PS, but that's not
quick anymore.

into the picture.  Weird perhaps, but it was what I was experimenting for. :-).
