If you're going to remove it, the diopter adjustment will get knocked around 
pretty easily. A little wad of museum putty will lock it in place.

Hmm. The rubber surround isn't too deep and just protects your glasses, at 
least on the Pentax models I had. 
If you're going to remove it, the diopter adjustment will get knocked around 
pretty easily. A little wad of museum putty will lock it in place.

Pentax rubber eye cups seem to be amazingly fragile, exceeded only by
how amazingly expensive they are.

good as it gets.  but removing the eye cup probably made it easier to
