Hmm. The rubber surround isn't too deep and just protects your glasses, at least on the Pentax models I had. If you're going to remove it, the diopter adjustment will get knocked around pretty easily. A little wad of museum putty will lock it in place. Pentax rubber eye cups seem to be amazingly fragile, exceeded only by how amazingly expensive they are. Is it the M28? I have the 3.5 and its probably my favoritest lens ever. I've taken more pictures with that than any other and it always delivered when stopped down slightly.
