Re Dec Pug
I thought it was a wonderful collection technically clever. I thought Ken's picture seemed to me big and vast and artful could fit a doz themes. And Jack's half dome makes me feel small and and limited in talent. And Rick W just irks me because I missed a chance to shoot that same statue this summer got their too late. Everyone else very very close to 1st place as I have been back 4 time and cannot find a wrong image in the lot. To those who singled out my effort thank you; it is one of my favorite photos and it won a prize at last Summer's IA state fair. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Dec PUG comments: Chris N.
Lasse, thanks for the comments. I left the photo unretouched in spirit of the synchronicity theme. I do agree some cropping and an exposure change would have helped. Wes Montgomery is a good choice! I think, however, that based on my poor effort for the January PUG, Wes' song Sack O'Woe recorded with Cannonball Adderly would be choice of soundtrack. Thanks again, and Happy New Year to you! Chris Sorry Chris and all for being this late in commenting. Synchronous Willow by Chris Niesmertelny, It also makes me want to listen to (jazz guitar player) Wes Montgomery's take on the song Willow Weep For Me. Re: Dec Pug comments: Skofteland, Niesmerstelny
Thanks Luis. You can see another cormorant shot taken on the same day only minutes before, here: http://photography.skofteland.net/animals/animal03.htm I think the colors are better than my submission but I liked the vertical seperation of the birds. Still has the black tree trunk in the LLC! I guess I should have cropped that out! Christian Luis Pinar wrote: My Dec PUG assignment: Dusk Watch by Christian Skofteland, USA: Nice silhouette and sky color. I like the way the bird on the right fits into the branch shape. The black area at the LLC I could do without. There are cormorants near where I live too and I have photographed them many times, but never as good as this. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Dec PUG comments for Theriault, Osojnik
Jaume, being a little late with reply, thanks for your comment. I'm no big fan of macro either, but decided to try out new glass in my collection, SMC Takumar 28/3,5 which goes a little beyond 1:1 when reversed. I took several shots of that ashtray but decided for this one exactly because of the texture it shows. I like the definition as Moon in Warhol's manner too. Thanks. As for other experiments, I took some night portraits at candle light but the results were to contrasty since I used Ilford HP5 at 3200 ASA which pushed the contrast to much. As well there were some close-up shots of CD collection in the rack with reversed M 50/1.7 that I like but I should clean CDs more carefully since there was some distracting dust visible. I might use one of them for the PUG some day. Thanks again, Matjaz Caught in the Glass by Matjaz Osojnik: I am (still) not really fan of macro, specially flowers or insects, but sometimes there are patterns and textures that work very well on this kind of photography. And yours is an exemple. I would define it as a Moon in a kind of Andy Warhols way :-) Since it is about showing a texture, I cant think on improvement or suggestions in this one. Great idea and very good result, will you show us the rest of your experiments? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Dec PUG comments for Theriault, Osojnik
Hi, Jaume, Thanks for taking the time to critique my image this month. All of your criticisms were and are valid. I knew it wasn't a particularly good photograph when I submitted it, but of the 15 or 20 that I took of the building and it's sign (different angles and distances, bracketing like mad), I opted for that one. I think what I should have done was to scout out what I was going to do before I left the house with my camera, but I didn't. I thought I'd try spontaneity, and just leave the house and see what comes up. Didn't work too well this time! ;-) Thanks again. regards, frank Jaume Lahuerta wrote: Helpless by Frank Theriault: Well, it is a picture very related with the months subject and with the moment in which it was done. You were very strict with the rules for this month, but this affected to the quality of the result. Maybe someone / something indicating the city where you took the picture, maybe showing the whole building (at least the lower part of it) would improve the final result. But, you chose to shot at the equinox precise moment instead of looking for a more balanced picture. Thanks for your contribution! -- The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. Re: Dec PUG comments
Bob - thanks for the comments. There were several bugs flying around among the various flowers. At first I tried to follow the bugs, then gave up and just framed the flower I wanted and waited for the bug to come to me. I think the color is about right. I forgot to mention that I had a Tiffen enhancing filter on the lens - the combination of the neutral-to-subdued Portra film plus the filter seems to produce pretty accurate, slightly saturated, colors. I know it would have been much brighter with Kodak Gold or one of the Fuji films, but this is late September after all and most natural colors are a bit muted . . . I am not totally happy with Portra as a general purpose film, but it does have the advantages that (a) my local store consistently has it in stock, and (b) I can get the same film for both 35mm and 645.
