Re: Recommendation for telezoom?

I have been very impressed with the performance of the FA 80-320/4.5-5.6. It's
not the sharpest tool in the shed, but it is very good for the money. It sells
new for below $200 and used for significantly less. I posted a shot from the
zoo just recently. This is at 320mm, hand held, wide open:

Although it's often lambasted for being terrible, the Pentax
F100-300/4.5-5.6 that I bought for $85 in EXC condition performs very
nicely when stopped down 2-3 stops. I rarely use such long lenses
without a tripod and at lens openings much larger than f/11 anyway.

example photo:
   http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/photo/PAW5/large/21O4-half.jpg
   Pentax *ist DS + F100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 + 2x-S Teleconverter
   ISO 200 @ f/13 @ 1/160 sec, EV +0.3, Av mode (f=600mm)

This lens suffices for my needs given the small amount that I use
longer than 135mm. I'd be willing to sell it for what I paid to
interested parties.

Re: Recommendation for telezoom?

2006-09-14 Thread P. J. Alling
I was able to get my F 70-210 for less than $70.00 US. It's a fine
performer and probably the best autofocus lens Pentax has made in that
focal length range except for the FA 80-200 f2.8. A lot of people like
the A 70-210 f4 for a manual focus zoom.

Used F70-210 (lottery to find a good one) or FA80-320 in that order.

New or second hand? Which film body?

New there is just the FA J 75-300/4-5.6, which doesn't have a great
reputation, and is a FA J, wich might lead to compatibility problems.
The FA 80-200/4.7-5.6, FA 80-320/4-5.6 and FA 100-300/4.7-5.8 have been in
production until recently, so they may still be available new.

Second hand the F70-210/4-5.6 is the most popular, at about $100,-. I used
to have the FA70-20/4-5.6 powerzoom which is not that much worse and,
sadly, sells for much less...

Oh, and in manual focus there are the A70-210/4 and the Vivitar series 1
70-210/3.5. Both should be great for little money.

Hope this helps,

I've got a cheap Sigma 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 that I used to use with my
Z-20 they can have cheap.

It's a piece of junk so I can't really recommend it.

Recommendation for telezoom?

2006-09-14 Thread Jostein Øksne
Folks,

I have a friend who looks for a cheap telezoom for his film-based Pentax.

I haven't paid attention to this part of the lens lineup for years, so
I need some help in finding the right recommendations. Do you have any
suggestions?

I guess he would like a few so that he can make a trade-off decision
between wallet and quality...:-)

Will be very grateful for input.

Jostein
