Auctions could be legitimate. He may have access to stolen property. That
fits the no reserve scenario. We had a fellow on eBay before that worked
for a large camera store that was auctioning off stuff at heart attack
prices. He got caught and then the buyers were questioned as to the
whereabouts of the equipment they bought from him. I don't know that
anything was ever actually recovered but the seller is, I believe, still in
jail.

Plus he's selling a BRAND NEW KODAK DCS 14n without a reserve, on a three
day action!

Not that I have anything against Bulgaria in general. I have visited
several
times and it is a lovely country with some fantastic people, but there is
something about this that looks slightly suspicious.

Are you telling me that you have never heard of shill-bidding? Of setting
up two or more eBay accounts with the express intention of scamming
pretty Aussie's with bony butts??

There are many many documented examples of illegal activity involving
eBay sellers and suspiciously good bargain sales. Have you ever wondered?

Wrong. Look a little further, and you find out that thise 12 good
feedbacks are all 'B' for Buyer - meaning the seller has purchased from
12 sellers to get 12 good feedbacks, and to top it all off they are for
Pokemon cards. Well d'uh. I'm not a genius but even I get alarm bells

Re: Slightly Dodgy looking Auction

2003-12-23 Thread Tanya Mayer Photography
Hey Cottster!

I totally agree, and maybe that is just the girl coming out in me, cause I
always *like* to give people the benefit of the doubt - in saying that
though, as I said, I would never part with any of my $$$ for something that
looked even remotely suspicious...

Yep, I know about shill-bidding, BUT I had never thought of it in the
respect that you are referring to, with the bidding/buying idea to build
feedback etc.

Actually, in retrospect, when thinking about this, I am surprised that
people have EVER even bought from me, as this is almost what I did. In the
first probably year on Ebay, I only ever purchased - and very small things
too - usually $2 or $3 items of baby clothing. I think I had well over 30
or so "buying" feedbacks before I ever got the guts to actually sell
something...

Yeah, the Bulgaria thing is extremely eyebrow raising, and like I said in my
last post, it was this comment in his email : "But if you want to win this
amazing Pentax camera please watch auction very carefuly becuase i think
that you will be outbid very soon" that really set the alarm bells off
for me...

"pretty Aussie's with bony butts??" hmmm, well, not sure that I agree with
the "pretty" bit, BUT let me tell you, after tommorrow and the coming days
"festivities" complete with LOTS of "good eatin'", combined with too many
hours sitting in front of this bloody 'puter, I fear that it is starting to
"err" on the side of "cuddly" rather than "bony"... hehe...

Mary Chritmoo AND (he has just added this bit) a "Nappy Nooo Year", hehe, I
just love kids (and especially mine of course!) lol...

We Aussies are more likely to believe somebody, because that is how we

There some people out there trying to make a fast buck. I have to say that
zero feedback alone would make me not want to bid, let alone the further
complications you highlight. Of course a lot of feedback isn't really what
it says. Graywolf already pointed this out that most 'positive' comments are
really neutral, not bad, just what you would expect from a deal. Because I
want a positive record, I'm just as guilty for giving positive feedback!

I followed a recent sale of a non-mu 67 and 90mm lens that went for GBP435.
Ten or so days after the sale, the buyer had it up for sale again with a
reserve of GBP500. Given the amount of film cameras up for sale, I wonder if
we will have more speculative buyers, seeing a quick profit. I'm still left
with that nagging doubt that this way of buying an expensive item is fraught
with danger, from exchange of funds, the postal system (some eBay purchases
I have had were incredibly badly packed), to trusting your idea of good
condition is also the same as the seller.

Re: Slightly Dodgy looking Auction

2003-12-25 Thread Larry Levy
Historical comments on Bridges and Islands:

Buying the Brooklyn Bridge:

When first built, the Brooklyn Bridge was a toll bridge, even levying a toll
on pedestrian traffic. Hence, owning a bridge like that would be tantamount
to owning a press that printed genuine currency. Some local sharpies
developed (ah, a reference to photography) the practice of selling this
apparently lucractive thoroughfare to visiting rubes. Now, crossing the
bridge does not involve a toll, and the old reason for purchasing it is
gone, but the phrase lingers.

Buying the island of Manhattan:

When the Dutch came to what is now New York City, they brought with them the
quaint European concept of land ownership. Being good businessmen, the Dutch
immediately tried to vastly underpay for the property they desired. They
offered their c. $24 worth of trinkets to the locals they encountered for
Manhattan. Land ownership was a foreign concept to the people living in the
area, so they took the money and conveyed the land. Shortly after the deal
was consumated, the Carnarsie Indians went back home to the area they lived
in - Brooklyn. (They were just visiting.) Hmm, who cheated whom?
